Went and voted today, first day of early voting. Waited until this mid-afternoon to avoid the crush. Wrong. Parked about 1/10 mile away from the polling place and walked. The lot was full and each aisle had people waiting in their cars for a spot to open up from a departing voter.

Inside the municipal building, the line stretched from the polling place, down the hall clear across the building, then back up the other side of the hall to the other end, then wrapped around again halfway up the hall again. A coiled-up multilegged arthropod, a voterpede. Everybody in good humor, some wearing their patriotic colors.

The line moved fairly efficiently, took about 50 minutes to get through. Appeared to be a cross section, lots of older people post-50's, quite a few workers, some housewives, a bunch of student aged. Some looked like they were voting the first time. One skinny guy had his sample ballot held up against his face the whole time, like it was a COVID mask.

Somehow this makes it a lot easier for me to tune out the noise that's coming over the next couple of weeks.

Don't forget to vote.

This is Michal Yon, you may remember him as the military blogger from Afghanistan and Iraq. Well he has seen a lot of protests up close, including coups, and says that this thing going on in France right now is clearly organized, and he explains the signs, how to tell. He says he was at J6 and there were agent provocateurs everywhere.

One thing he said happened at J6 was that if a group has drums, it's left wing, no exceptions. Trump supporters don't use drums at demonstrations, and a group showed up dressed like Trumpers, but had drums to get them going. That was only one sign at J6.

Anyway, the first part, where he discusses the things he knows, which is how these "protests" work is fascinating, but the second half gets into a lot more speculation, and YMMV with that, IDK. It's the first part I am linking for.

We had the word "cavalier" pop up earlier today. Earlier tonight, we of AA, reading a story from the back of the Big Book, came upon the word "insouciance".

ai: Cavalier primarily means showing a careless, dismissive, or indifferent attitude toward important or serious matters, often ignoring other people's safety or feelings.

ai: "Insouciance is a formal, literary noun meaning a relaxed, carefree attitude, a lack of concern, or a cheerful indifference to things that normally cause worry."

I don't know Pat Murphy. But it's possible Pat displayed "insouciance" towards the investigation, and was not really "cavalier". But once finding out their mistake, the NCAA was not about to admit that they had wronged Pat Murphy. So they went on to say he was "cavalier". Typical autocratic, cavalier bureaucracy.

Of course, the state will use the same screening techniques it uses for teachers, so the children will all be sexually abused, but at least they won't be killed.

" Why do richer people seem to dislike traveling more?

I came across a blogger's take that I think really hits the nail on the head.

He said: Traveling is the most basic lifestyle.
Truly wealthy and leisurely people don't travel at all.

Because for ordinary folks, traveling is about "checking in." The whole family drags their luggage along, rushing for trains, queuing up, buying tickets, crammed in crowds—by the end of the trip, you're exhausted to pieces and your wallet's flat broke. Spending money to suffer, then patting yourself on the back for it.

While for the rich, it's about "vacationing."
They find a spot with great views and peace and quiet, stay for ten days or half a month, sleep until they wake naturally, don't go anywhere—just stay put.
One's always rushing on the road, the other's just living life..."

re: Macron compared to Musk

"I used the Dark Triad to look at Macron. The most common reply was: "Do Elon next. Richest man on earth, runs half a dozen companies, fights with everyone online. He must be the ultimate Dark Triad case."

I think he's close to the opposite. And the contrast teaches something important.

Quick reminder of the three traits. Narcissism: grandiosity, need for admiration, a fragile relationship to being wrong. Machiavellianism: strategic manipulation of people, long-term calculation, concealment. Psychopathy: low empathy, emotional coldness, indifference to the harm you cause. Not diagnoses, dimensions. What matters is how far you go, and in what combination.

Let's start with the one people will throw at me first: narcissism.

Elon obviously scores high on grandiosity. Nobody decides to make humanity multiplanetary with a modest ego. But grandiosity isn't the core of narcissism. The core is how you handle being wrong.

For Macron, being wrong is an injury. So the error gets defended, explained away, blamed on others.

Elon blows up rockets in public. On livestream. And his teams celebrate, because every explosion is data. He posts memes about himself, laughs at his own failures, says absurd things and gets mocked by millions, and keeps going. He doesn't take himself seriously. He takes the mission seriously."

So she's seeing what you saw, Aggie, in her state. In what state are you seeing the lines?

I've have never voted early before (or by mail, absentee ballot or otherwise) in my life. I'm strictly a vote in-person, photo-ID-in-hand gal. Which I would prefer everyone should be.

But I think I will vote early this year. I assume there will be lines because I live in an area that votes (The Villages, Fl). As I understand it, the Elections Commission did conclude that clerks cannot use SAVE in its current form. But the bipartisan commission's vote was unanimous, and its Republican chairman had already told legislators that state law would need to change first. The issue is Wisconsin's privacy protections, not opposition to citizenship verification.

Mason G raises a fair question about how citizenship is verified. Wisconsin relies partly on sworn declarations, and knowingly falsifying voter-registration information is a felony, so it's more than a "pinky swear."

Surely we can find ways to strengthen citizenship verification while protecting personal information and avoiding mistakes that might prevent eligible citizens from voting. Those seem like goals everyone could support.

Alberta voters reject a move toward independence in referendum backing Canadian unity ~ NPR

The media hype leading up to the vote made this seem far closer than it actually was.

Having visited Alberta multiple times, my impression is that support for independence is largely confined to a relatively small segment of the population — some oil patch workers, truckers and ranchers. The outcome was hardly surprising. It’s a good example of how a vocal fringe minority can gain legitimacy simply by shouting loudly enough online and dominating the conversation.

As with any place, Alberta’s stereotypes have some basis in reality, but they hardly represent the majority of Albertans.

Original Mike చెప్పారు...

"Surely we can find ways to strengthen citizenship verification while protecting personal information and avoiding mistakes that might prevent eligible citizens from voting. Those seem like goals everyone could support."

Rustygrommet చెప్పారు...

The issue is Wisconsin's privacy protections, not opposition to citizenship verification.

Remember the lefts vigorous effort to have your governor impeached? Remember the recall petitions being circulated?Remember that? Some wag on this blog predicted, (oh, that was me!) that there would be 10 percent fraudulent signatures. Turns out it was closer to 20 percent. I concluded from that, that the left will do anything to cheat politically. It has nothing to do with privacy. Your name and address is already on the voter list. Your precinct, Your district and your state already have all your information. There is no assumption of privacy.
So my question to you is. What can it hurt to ensure election integrity to have voters prove that they are legally entitled to vote?

Original Mike చెప్పారు...

"It has nothing to do with privacy. Your name and address is already on the voter list. Your precinct, Your district and your state already have all your information. There is no assumption of privacy."

'...It’s a good example of how a vocal fringe minority can gain legitimacy ...'

And this is a good example of Bad Faith arguing, presenting itself as reasonable logic.

25% of the voting populace is not a 'fringe.' A proposal that gathers 25% of the vote in support is not an example of a small number of people punching way above their weight and 'dominating the conversation'. Its a legitimate political proposal that was articulated and onto the ballot, which lost at the balloting place.

Bad Faith.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ చెప్పారు...

I didn’t say the 25% weren’t legitimate voters. I said a vocal minority can dominate the conversation without representing the majority. Those are two entirely different things. You’ve managed to argue against a point I didn’t make and call it bad faith. That’s quite a trick. 😉

Bullsh*t. You called 25% of the populace that voted for separation a 'fringe'. That's what you called them, and you're wrong.

Mason G చెప్పారు...

How can you be sure he called them that? He could have copy/pasted that from someplace else.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ చెప్పారు...

25% is a substantial minority. I’ll grant you that. But a quarter of the electorate voting for separation doesn’t make separation a mainstream position, much less mean the movement’s prominence in the media and online reflected its actual level of public support.

My point was about a vocal minority punching above its weight in the public conversation, not whether those voters were entitled to their views. You’re fixating on the word “fringe” rather than addressing that distinction.

You’re arguing that 25% is too large to call a fringe. Fair enough. But you still haven’t explained why the volume of the debate should be mistaken for the views of the majority. Loudness and numbers are two different metrics.
