.. the new email from the Democratic Party relied on a similar psychological manipulation: My reputation is at stake. People whom I want to think well of me know that I'm not quite good enough, and they are showing me what I can do to fix that. I'd better vote this time so I don't look bad on the next mailer OR I can hit the $3/$10/$50 donate button.

I am going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction: In the Michigan Senate race Rogers will beat El-Sayid handily, i.e. by at least 4 percentage points.

Why do I say this? Because I was watching the news today and they interviewed a black minister on Rogers' staff, and he let slip an interesting detail --- the Arab and Black communities in Michigan despise each other.

I read the liberal news magazine The New Republic from 1981 until 2003, so I was reading what liberals say to other liberals. There were, over those years, multiple articles detailing how Democrats must capture at least 88%-plus of the black vote or they lose. If their share should drop below 80%, they can't get elected dog catcher if they're the only guy on the ballot. El Sayid's share is well under 80% --- about 75%. He's toast.

If Trump's share of the black vote (especially black men) stays in the Republican camp after he leaves the field in two years, it will be a yuuuuge realignment in political demographics. We shall see,

Trump says Brazil election looked ‘rigged,’ while defeated Bolsonaro’s party recognizes Lula’s win ~ Reuters

Would Trump intervene in Brazil’s election if he genuinely believed it was rigged? Probably not. Brazil doesn’t matter enough to him personally—though it’s probably just as well that he’s keeping his distance.

The bigger question is: What should we expect from Trump on November 3? Will he accept the midterm results if Republicans lose, or start laying the groundwork to challenge them?

Of course we don't believe that 35% of the female student body has been assaulted or raped. However, their young minds have been so filled with the 'horrors' of life as we know it- as everyone has known it throughout time, that they view being hit on as being assaulted.
I cannot speak for the Yoots, but I do remember what my college years were like in the early 70s. And I'll tell you, we've apparently fallen a long way from the attitudes of the late 60s/early 70s to today. And while I know they think they are more enlightened today, more 'woke', they seem like an entire generation in need of both a good psychologist and a good history professor to me.

If these are the minds being cranked out by Cornell, Columbia, Penn, Brown, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton these days, I'm not sure they're ready for the actual world outside of their respective college towns. And I can assure you I would not spend the money to send my kids to one of those places. The damage done will not be worth that first job placement. The job will last a couple of years. The damage will last throughout their adulthood.

My observation about the increasingly popular practice of jailing your political adversaries after elections has a predictable endgame eventually, namely, civil war. It may simmer for a while, but if continued it will eventually go kinetic.

I mention this not just in regard to Brazil, but it looks like it's openly being strategized here as well. One of the remarkable things about the United States has been the orderly and peaceful transition of its government after elections. That is clearly changing. And cooler heads need to find a way to prevail before that tradition is gone for good.

@Jamie, Big Mike — it really does matter where we live. bagoh20 posted a very useful table here on October 24 (in the comments on the testosterone levels post) showing gasoline prices ranging from about $6.03 in California to $3.51 in North Carolina.

Gas prices vary considerably from state to state, but taxes and regulations are only part of the story. In California, higher taxes and environmental requirements play a role, but refinery capacity, transportation costs, and regional supply constraints matter too. Hawaii and Nevada illustrate that geography also matters. Nevada, for example, gets much of its gasoline from California. Meanwhile, Texas and Louisiana benefit from proximity to Gulf Coast refineries and extensive distribution networks.

One interesting detail about the table: North Carolina and Georgia have temporarily suspended their state gasoline taxes, ordinarily 41 cents and 33.3 cents per gallon, respectively, through November 30. That helps explain their unusually low prices. The relief is real, but there's a budgetary trade-off. North Carolina, for example, is drawing on reserve funds to replace the lost tax revenue.

The table provides a helpful snapshot, but geography, market conditions, and government policies all contribute to what we pay at the pump. It's difficult to attribute the differences to any single factor, much less to which political party governs a state. North Carolina's Democratic governor, Josh Stein, and Georgia's Republican governor, Brian Kemp, both supported temporary gasoline-tax relief.

It seems to me the huge advantage football (both college and professional) has in terms of broadcast popularity is the restricted number of games. There are only 17 games in the regular season for the NFL, and I think roughly the same number for college teams, as opposed to 162 in the baseball regular season and 82 in the NBA regular season. While not quite matching the NBA with only one-third of the teams eliminated from postseason play by their regular season records, both baseball and football advance roughly half of the league into wild-card and play-off games. However, given the fact that baseball teams play almost ten times the number of regular season games, and then play multiple games in postseason matchups, I'm not surprised casual baseball fans are just overwhelmed by the flood of games being played.

Under Lula this year the real rose 10% and the Bovespa 38% in dollar terms (depending on the dates used). Markets didn’t find a fiscal problem on Sunday. They found their bet was wrong, and the financial press is reporting the loss as Brazil’s.

It's almost as though the markets wanted an authoritarian right-wing government to win instead.. Moreover, capitalism needs the rule of law to successfully work.

There was a euphoria priced in which was never justified to begin with -- Bolsonaro is not a free-market titan. The sell-off appears overdone as Lula is not a Peronist. He has Congress against him like no other president before. This requires some skills on both parts to get anything done. The smart move for Lula is centrist pragmatism, he does not have a mandate (nor the funds) for left-wing adventures.

This is an old, old trick. Notice the change in wording. The 35% figure is for "nonconsensual sexual contact." This include all sorts of trivial things. But then the author slyly slides over to talking about "assault" and "rape" hoping the reader will think that assault and rape frequency is also 35%.

This has been standard practice for a long time with these people and the trick is well known by. I'm surprised so many of you still fall for it. All we really learn from this is that Ortiz is dishonest and should be ignored.

If the spectrum of rape and sexual assault expands to include what used to be called "offensive touching" (and I'm not justifying that, but still), then actual rape and true sexual **assault** are diluted in meaning, and horror. I don't accept that 35% figure as meaning something solid. I think it's dilution, and this is not a good thing for myriad reasons. It's not honest, and it doesn't help women. Why those who think loosey-goosey expansion of meaning is helpful, truly helpful, to women is beyond me, especially mid-to-long term. I don't support that. "Gas prices vary considerably from state to state, but taxes and regulations are only part of the story. In California, higher taxes and environmental requirements play a role, but refinery capacity, transportation costs, and regional supply constraints matter too."

I'm in California right now. I got my geology degree here and worked in the oil patch here after graduation. "Refinery capacity, transportation costs, and regional supply constraints" ARE the result of policy decisions here:

Their refinery capacity is low because they've forced the shutdown of most of it and have refused to allow more refineries to be built for decades.

Their transportation costs are high because of their gas taxes, because of their insufficient refinery capacity resulting from their not permitting adequate refining in-state, and because of their not permitting new offshore production OR pipelines.

Their regional supply constraints - same as above.

California is rich in resources beyond anyone's wildest imagining - name another state so phenomenally endowed. (Maybe Alaska? But it has huge downsides in location and climate.) Their problems are of their own making. I absolutely hate being here despite its beauty and climate, and even despite the presence of my family, because they can't be trusted to use the simplest powers of reason to observe the effects of their actions.

Humperdink చెప్పారు...

If a young lady organizes a threesome with two guys at Cornell does that count as one sexual assault or two?

Jamie చెప్పారు...

"If the spectrum of rape and sexual assault expands to include what used to be called "offensive touching" (and I'm not justifying that, but still), then actual rape and true sexual **assault** are diluted in meaning, and horror."

I had the same thought, but I took it to a different place. These young women who feel unsafe all the time because there are penised people lurking everywhere - they will have to go through life awash in cortisol, because there actually ARE dangerous places and situations in the world, and they'll just have to assume that ALL situations and places are equivalent in danger to the ones that actually raise their hackles and get their hearts racing.

Of course, rcommal is talking about something real: the dilution of "sexual assault" will result not in society's tender care of all "survivors" and opprobrium for all "perpetrators," but rather in a good portion of society's rolling their eyes at every new claim of "sexual assault" - leaving survivors of ACTUAL sexual assault back in the dark ages of "Well, what did she do to deserve it? Must have been something, right?" That will be a real and terrible consequence.

I don't believe for a moment that this one-third of female Cornell students believe what they themselves claim. I do think that their judgment of relative danger has been blown to hell - but not in the direction of assuming constant danger, as I was mostly ironically suggesting above. Rather, I think that they believe they're SAFE all the time - and that a display of high dudgeon will get them out of any situation they wind up regretting. (And that being a victim, even as they reject the term "victimhood" and claim instead to be "survivors," will make them seem special and brave.)

Big Mike చెప్పారు...

I have my suspicions that “nonconsensual sexualcontact” includes sitting in the Student Union hoping that the handsome guy in a football letterman’s sweater will pay some attention to her, but the guy who asks her if she wants to go for a cup of coffee is an obvious computer nerd. How DARE the wrong guy show interest in her!

IEE (8:54am) thinks Brazil just _avoided_ having "an authoritarian . . . government" in power? The incumbent Lula not only blatantly stole the election, he has his previous opponent, Bolsonaro Senior, doing 27 years in jail - more than murderers get in civilized countries! - and just confiscated the passport of his current opponent, Bolsonaro Junior. How stupid or paid-off do you have to be to say that Bolsonaro Junior, not Lula, is the "authoritarian"?

The good news is that Twitter reports that Bolsonaro Junior escaped from Brazil, slipping across the border to Argentina and taking a private plane to the U.S. Twitter also reports that Lula was desperate to keep him in the country because he has hard evidence of Lula's intimate dealings with Venezuelan and Cuban dictators and international drug lords, evidence he could hand over to the International Criminal Court.

Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing your firsthand experience. You make a fair point about how government policy can shape gasoline prices through refinery investment, transportation infrastructure, and regional supply constraints. I should have been clearer.

California's refining capacity has certainly declined, and regulations have contributed. But a July 2026 Stanford study of the state's refining industry also identifies declining demand, industry consolidation, and changing refinery economics. These factors aren't entirely independent of policy, but it's difficult to attribute every closure to government decisions.

On transportation, you're right that California's limited pipeline connections make replacement supplies more expensive. Geography matters too. Interestingly, Phillips 66, Kinder Morgan, and HF Sinclair approved a $5 billion pipeline project in August that would bring refined fuels into California, with completion targeted for 2029, subject to regulatory approval.

You're also right that California's special gasoline requirements constrain supply by limiting the number of refineries capable of serving its market. That's another clear example of how policy affects prices. On offshore drilling, though, additional crude production wouldn't necessarily solve shortages of refined gasoline.

I think we agree that California's policy choices have contributed a lot to its higher gasoline prices, both directly and indirectly. My only reservation is with attributing virtually all its refinery, transportation, and supply problems to those decisions. Geography, industry economics, and changing demand also play roles, even if government policy influences some of them.

From bagho20 earlier, The 5 highest-priced states for regular gasoline [10-24-26] .
California — about $6.03/gal
Hawaii — about $5.66/gal
Washington — about $5.31/gal
Nevada — about $5.30/gal
Illinois — about $4.90/gal

The 5 lowest-priced states for regular gasoline today
North Carolina — about $3.51/gal
Georgia — about $3.67/gal
Texas — about $3.73/gal
Louisiana — about $3.80/gal
South Carolina — about $3.80/gal

"even if government policy influences some of them."

Which industry actions/decisions does the government have a "hands-off" policy on?

What is the problem with what Jamie said. You just riterated his points and agreed he was correct.
High prices are the result of scarcity. Especially when demand remains the same. Scarcity can be caused by natural influences or they can be man made. In the case of California they are all man made.
There is no reason to import crude to California. California is sitting on an ocean of crude. The state has determined that crude is a pollutant and has curtailed exploration and drilling and have also prevented existing wells to produce. Since the last year California has caused two refineries to be closed. The Valero refinery and the Phillips 66 refinery.
All of this causes scarcity. Thus the rise in prices.

California’s demand for refined oil products reportedly declined by 15% since 2004. Their refinery capacity dropped by 18% in the last 2 years.

I am paying 3.55 a gallon.

It is only retards like you voting for democrats in California and New York keeping the gas prices up.

Hi Rustygrommet, sorry for any confusion. I agree that California's policies have shaped gasoline prices in both direct and indirect ways. I just don't think they explain all the state's supply problems.

California has substantial oil resources, yet its refineries obtained only about 23% of their crude from in-state sources in 2025. Regulations play a part, but so do aging oilfields and production economics. Valero cited California's regulatory environment when closing its Benicia refinery, while Phillips 66 pointed to broader market conditions.

I agree that declining refining capacity while gasoline demand remains substantial is a serious problem. But acknowledging policy's role doesn't rule out geography, geology, and market forces. That's really the distinction I'm making.

Policy is a way to manipulate market forces. It is an intrusive third party. Third parties always skew prices in an unfavorable direction.
Every basic refinery is designed around the type of crude it will initially distill. To distill other types of crude oil more distillation processes have to be built.
