I suppose Althouse will leave the subject of Anne Carson sooner rather than later. Before that happens I wish to put a bee in the the commentariat's collective bonnet: Is poetry literature?
noun 1. The body of written works of a language, period, or culture. 2. Imaginative or creative writing, especially of recognized artistic value. 3. The art or occupation of a literary writer.
Poetry fits within the second meaning, so yes, poetry is literature.
I disagree, Breezy. I, too, can read a dictionary. The key words are writing and written. Nothing is said of reciting or singing. Much of poetry existed (and in some cultures still exists) without being written, often for centuries. Do you really think that Homer took pen in hand to compose the Iliad?
No. Poetry is more akin to music rather than to literature.
Saint Croix -- let me simplify it for you: Voters hate inflation, Tariffs and the Iran war are both inflationary. Both were deliberate choices by Trump.
In review: voters hate inflation, but they hate the cure for inflation, high interest rates and fiscal austerity, even more.
I think the key factor is poetry and literature both involve words and their assembly in an imaginative or creative endeavor, whether verbal or written. Lyrics associated with music would fall in with this delineation. An assembly of words can closely resemble music, no doubt.
The most obvious example of that would be the price of gas. But it's pretty normal now. I just paid $3.60 a gallon. It was a $1 higher in September. If the prices keep dropping, that will be a nice October surprise, right?
Interesting that "Doctor" Abdul El-Sayed has never practiced medicine and has no license to practice medicine.
By the standards in place against Trump's press secretary, the press should never refer to him as a doctor, right? It would be fraudulent and dishonest to say you are a doctor when you cannot practice anywhere.
Sometimes I think Trump plays 3-D chess. This time I'm thinking, he's just lucky. Anyway, a new attack avenue has opened up in Michigan. "Claims that he's a doctor. He's never practiced in New York or Michigan. And he's not allowed to."

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the U.S. economy faces significant headwinds driven by high inflation, rising interest rates, and record-breaking national debt. While an AI-driven investment boom and strong corporate spending continue to prop up the stock market and headline GDP growth (at 1.5%), the broader reality for regular consumers includes an out-of-control cost of living and rising borrowing costs. Public sentiment reflects this tension, with roughly 73% of voters rating economic conditions as "fair" or "poor". putting it mildly, Americans are downright pissed off over all healthcare plan(10 years same talk) Inflation: Consumer price inflation is hovering between 3.4% and 3.5%, well above the Federal Reserve's 2% target, eroded by ongoing tariffs and energy disruptions. The unemployment rate sits at 4.1%, but job growth has slowed substantially to an average of just 43,000 monthly. national debt has officially crossed the $40 trillion milestone. Nice record to hold after the i'll bring debt down .The annual federal deficit has climbed to roughly $2 trillion (almost 8% higher than initial projections), on track toward $2.5 trillion. Deficits have been severely widened by the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" (a sweeping tax cut that caused corporate tax revenues to drop by 25%) and the direct costs of the ongoing war with Iran, which cost $37.5 billion by mid-summer. Despite campaign pledges from Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to trim $2 trillion in waste, actual spending cuts only totaled about $35 billion. wonder all the perp can due is culture wars and sic Justice crime center on his opponents Due to high interest rates and massive principal balances, the government now spends over $1 trillion annually just to pay interest on its debt. Energy costs are a major source of pain for consumers, heavily influenced by Middle East instability caused by the no plan attack of Iran based on lies(just like Gulf or Tonkin) Regular gasoline is averaging $4.47 per gallon nationwide. Crude oil has surged past $100 a barrel(BRENT was heading toward 110.00) while diesel prices have skyrocketed above $6 a gallon. High diesel costs are directly compounding inflation by making grocery and retail shipping more expensive. The administration's trade strategy has further pressured consumer wallets. A newly enacted slate of tariffs on imports from Canada—accompanied by escalating tariff threats on the Canadian auto sector—has provoked retaliatory trade actions. The nonpartisan Yale Budget Lab estimates these tariffs cost the average American household an extra $1,100 per year in consumer goods inflation. While tariffs were intended to generate massive government revenue, a major Supreme Court ruling (Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump) restricted emergency tariff authority and forced the government to issue $130 billion in tariff refunds to importers, turning customs duties into a net negative for the federal deficit. Just the tip of this foul mouthed poor example of the presidency of the United SHTATES! Is it any wonder all they can talk about is fraud voting, mail in fraud from the guy who votes by mail.
The fact that Trump is cozying up to Putin by exempting Russia from further sanctions required by law should be noted. He is single-handedly helping Russia at every opportunity.
The Trump administration has effectively become a fifth column for Putin. I hope MAGA Americans are proud of what their country has become.
My only question is whether a defeat in the midterm elections would significantly hinder Trump’s ability to help Putin continue carrying out daily war crimes.
Recent stories in the Financial Times, CBS News, and The New York Times report some interesting connections between people close to Donald Trump and Republika Srpska, a predominantly Serb political entity within Bosnia whose leadership has close ties to Russia and Putin.
Several Trump-connected consultants have received substantial payments for lobbying or political advice. One lobbying firm, paid $35,000 a month by Republika Srpska, includes Katie Wiles, daughter of White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, as a partner. Another partner arranged a White House meeting with Susie Wiles. Meanwhile, other Trump-connected businessmen are pursuing potentially lucrative natural gas projects in the region.
Asked about Chris LaCivita and James Blair, who were paid to advise the Bosnian Serb leadership, Trump initially said he didn't know about their other clients and promised to "terminate them" if there was a conflict. Later, he explained that they were "independent people" who "don't work for me, other than as outside consultants."
Trump's initial concern seems reasonable. The potential conflict is that foreign interests seeking favorable decisions from Washington are paying people with close connections to the president, while other associates could benefit from related business opportunities.
None of this establishes wrongdoing, and legitimate foreign lobbying is perfectly legal. But Trump's own remarks raise an interesting question: Does being an independent consultant adequately address potential conflicts of interest when foreign governments may be paying for those consultants' services partly because of their close relationships with the president and their potential influence over American policy?
