Putin has given Trump his to-do list, to be completed before the mid-terms while he is still useful. The utter lack of any critical thinking, or clear foreign policy objectives, beyond self-enrichment is starting to finally catch up.

Re Paxton debate. Paxton, like Talarico, has access to internal polls. He knows what's going on.
Paxton has a record to run on; with some bad allegations but also a history of winning statewide races. T has only a record of being a backbencher in a very minority party in the state legislature. T's record of goofy and contradictory statements can be presented effectively in media and paid advertising- I'm getting daily postcards about these.
As Leland said, very few people will be swayed in Paxton's favor by any conceivable debate. Paxton is unfortunately a setup for literal "When did you stop beating your wife?" questions, notwithstanding that his ex has endorsed him.
A debate is a high risk, low gain proposition; he's doing the right thing by maintaining his present course.

For the few who do watch, Talerico would be talking incessantly about all the atrocities that Paxton has committed, but everyone knows about these after Paxton's years in public life (it's interesting that I get a mailer 3-4/week reminding me of this, but never anything about what T would do or has done from his campaign).
I get Talerico ads on Facebook, lots of them. They get lots of positive comments and claims to have donated to his campaign. Essentially all of them are from out of state.
If the moderator is anywhere near neutral, he would ask T about his numerous past looney statement about God being non-binary, and all the rest. He does not want that.
It would be good theater.
Good theater is like poetry.
