Obvious question, why that plane didn’t land in Israel? Because it was denied permission to enter Israel airspace, on reasonable assumption that it was piloted by hijackers and will be used as a missile, like ok 9-11. Jordan also refused the plane and at the end Saudi Arabia allowed it to land on their territory. Considering that the plane sustained serious structural damage and could brake at any moment, it is fair to suppose that Saudi action saved lives of all those Israeli on board.
Now, when a plane is denied permission to enter some country airspace, that means if it violates orders it can be shot down immediately. Basically, all those Israeli on board were already written as a loss by Israeli government. If Saudi didn’t step in, all those people would be most likely dead now.

According to Captain Steve (who's a good source on commercial airtravel) those pilots had flown the first leg of the flight but were prevented from doing the second leg (probably because of work length rules for pilots) so the the second pilot-pair took over. (So to answer my own question, yes Captain Smit probably knew they were back there).

The aircraft transmitted 7700, the international code for a general emergency.
It then switched to 7500, the internationally recognised code for unlawful interference or hijacking.
Again, this was recorded independently while the incident was actually unfolding.
🔴 There were 182 people on board
Saudi authorities say there were 174 passengers and 8 crew members aboard the aircraft.
So this wasn't an incident supposedly witnessed by two or three carefully selected people. There was an entire passenger aircraft full of witnesses.
🔴 There is footage from inside the aircraft
Passengers had phones.
Multiple recordings from inside the aircraft have emerged showing the chaos, frightened passengers and the aftermath of what happened.
No, that doesn't mean literally every one of the 174 passengers was filming. But you're dealing with a packed commercial aircraft in 2026. There were a huge number of independent witnesses capable of recording and describing what they saw.

Saudi Arabia's National Transport Safety Center launched its own aviation safety investigation and began collecting evidence relating to the emergency landing.

My guess is that he may have been born in New Zealand, but live in Fiji, and may be a dual citizen. NZ would be an obvious place for Fijian airlines to recruit pilots.

This couldn't; possibly be a false flag operation. The scenario is just too incredible. The whole scenario sounds more like a lurid Walter Mitty fantasy than a real event. If a scriptwriter submitted this for a movie, he'd be laughed out of town. I personally like the plumber the best. I have written two lengthy comments, but the wiserack remains. I;m glad things went right on that flight and that there were a surfeit of heroes to step forward. That's not the way life usually works. It doesn't take all that much planning for a madman with an axe and access to the controls and cockpit of an airplane to crash it.......It took a near miraculous chain of brave acts by brave men .to provide a happy ending here.

But an all-male cabin crew does not establish wrongdoing, and the assertion that Muslim airlines “normally” require a woman on every flight to deal with female passengers is not evidence of anything. Flydubai itself says cabin crew intervened, and two off-duty Flydubai pilots who happened to be passengers helped secure and land the aircraft.
As for the UAE asking people not to circulate unverified claims: that isn’t evidence of a cover-up. It is precisely what authorities normally say while an investigation is underway and the UAE aviation authority has explicitly said it will not comment on circulating claims until investigators establish the facts.
So by all means investigate the allegations. But “I saw it on X” is not the same thing as corroborated evidence and calling someone a paid propagandist doesn’t magically upgrade it to evidence.
Also—Reuters now confirms that the sequence of events remains under investigation, while ABC Verify has documented a broader wave of false and fabricated claims spreading online about this particular incident.

No, this is not true as a general or “normal” policy for airlines from Muslim-majority countries. There is no evidence of a standard requirement across “Muslim airlines” that every flight must include at least one female crew member specifically to assist female passengers for religious or cultural reasons.
