I haven't really paid attention to the press secretary kerfuffle. I was to busy not reading hit pieces on Bessent and Hegseth earlier this week. When 99.9% of the national media is smear jobs and hit pieces on Trump and his minions it is hard to notice if someone actually deserves it.

To the degree that there is any "big question" here, it's whether each and everyone of her employers understood that she'd never passed a bar exam and therefore was never accepted into a bar and therefore was never an attorney. I said twice in this post that I disapproved of the violent metaphor, but violent metaphor is everywhere in English speech. We talk about "axing" someone when we mean firing. And "assassinate" is frequently used to refer to damaging a reputation.

As for the way she looks, it seems that there is affirmative action for women who look like that. That's bad quite apart from whether we like this look, which I emphatically do not. I think it reflects badly on Trump that he's giving a big hiring preference to women who put a crazy amount of time and effort into hair, makeup, and surgery. It's constructing a glass ceiling: A woman has to do things to get in on the ground floor and those very things will keep her from getting to a higher floor.

My reaction as well. She has the typical annoying Southern California accent. The California accent often features "uptalk," where declarative sentences end with a rising pitch similar to a question, especially in Southern California speech patterns.
Combine this with the nasal/whining tone of her voice and it is difficult to take her seriously or really listen to her words. Plus....all the overly detailed excuses.
HOWEVER.....She was obviously unprepared....not ready....so it is unfair to preemptively judge her. Give her some more time.

I think that if she represented herself as an attorney in order to practice in any particular (American) jurisdiction she would be in violation of state laws and/or bar association provisions. But apparently all she did was generally say that she is a "lawyer" or "attorney." And that she "practiced" in China. Sounds like she did paralegal work. If she was supervised by an attorney who signed off on her work that probably doesn't violate any rules. (I have no idea what the rules are in China).
It certainly doesn't have any real relevance to her qualifications to be a press secretary.

She's clearly not of the same caliber as her predessor and doesn't appear to be ready for prime time. In situations like this there will always be overkill by political oppnonents - but that doesn't mean that there was nothing to criticize.

Isn't "firing" just as violent as "axing"? One is death by a firearm, the other by an ax. Just different ways of terminating someone. I guess it would be less violent to make someone redundant or to dismiss them, but I think there's more dignity in being fired.

Law school itself is a bit of a racket (sorry, Althouse). Lawyers I know almost unanimously say (1) it doesn't prepare you for the practice of law; (2) Three years is at least one year too many.
I'm not saying it's of no value; I'm sure the students learn a lot of important material, especially in the first year. But it still strikes me as in part a way to make it more costly to enter the profession.

Is the rule (1) if you have a JD you can technically call yourself a lawyer; (2) you cannot call yourself a lawyer unless and until you have been admitted to the bar; or (3) it’s case (1) if you’re a Democrat and case (2) if you’re a Republican?

I think Zacharia might have survived if she had not botched her first press conference and had a clear explanation for calling herself a lawyer/attorney. I would have written her the following statement:
“I’m a lawyer, or an attorney if you prefer that term, because I worked as a lawyer on international transaction matters in China for a Chinese law firm, a job I lined up when I was in law school. I did take the California bar exam after graduating, thinking I would practice law in California when I returned to the U.S., and failed part of it on my first try, but didn’t retake it when I returned because I decided to take my career in another direction, towards media and communication. But once a lawyer, always a lawyer, I’ve always heard.”
If you can’t tell your own true story with conviction, how are you going to spin the lies the Trump administration will have you telling?
