"... he kept apologizing for his casual outfit. 'He told me, "Sorry for being dressed like this; I’m always in a suit on television,"' recalled [Celia] Melamed. 'I don’t have a television, so I had no idea what he was talking about.' The man was Javier Milei, at the time a TV pundit in Argentina known for railing against the government. The mastiff was Conan, soon to be Argentina’s most famous dog.... Ms. Melamed then became [Milei's] dedicated pet psychic. He kept hiring her for the next two years, she said, including to talk to Conan in the afterlife and to the five clones made with Conan’s DNA...."

"The President’s Dog Psychic/In Argentina, many people try to read the mind of the president. Celia Melamed read the mind of his dogs" (NYT).
At the link to there's a photo of a book Milei wrote and autographed for Melamed. It says: "For Celia, TOTAL GENIUS OF THE UNIVERSE, the being of light who helped me find the way."

"His English mastiff was dying, so he hired her to read its mind. But when she met the man with the messy hair...he kept apologizing for his casual outfit.”
For a minute I thought this was going to be another Anne Carson post.
According to my sources, Conan had a surprising grasp of Hayek, something that is apparently unusual in the larger breeds.
I love my 2019 Ram 1500 Limited. It has some crazy features that are totally unnecessary and sometimes even annoying, but the truck does everything I want it to and gets the job done reliably. Some people are like that. Maybe Javier Milei is like that. Trump is like that.
One thing about Trump — there's no sign that he's getting his ideas from a dog.
This reminds me of the Son of Sam.
Anyway, Trump does not relate to nonhuman animals. He's strictly about the humans. Some pretty strange humans. But humans. Everyone's got to give him that.
Animal psychics do not read the animal’s mind — they read the human’s emotions.
I'm starting to think maybe this guy's perhaps a little eccentric.
Melei has largely succeeded in what he was elected to do.
Grok says:
Annual inflation fell from 211% in 2023 to roughly 31–34% by mid-to-late 2026.
The government achieved primary and overall surpluses after years of large deficits, via deep real spending cuts (around 30% in the early period, equivalent to several points of GDP). Public employment was reduced and many ministries/agencies were eliminated or downsized.
Poverty rates have fallen dramatically.
Capital inflows and credit-rating upgrades occurred. Credit agencies have improved Argentina’s sovereign ratings.
Why Anne Carson and not Winston Churchill? Aren't Bull dogs mastiff?

Bob Boyd explains why our hostess tries to diminish a successful politician..
Imagine if our spending could be reduced by 30%. Our people would have glorious future ahead. One man did it for an entire nation.
@ Mike D
I doubt Althouse was trying to diminish Melei. She probably just found the story interesting, which it is, and bloggable.
I have no doubt the NYT was trying to diminish Melei and maybe he is weird, but it seems he's also effective, which is what the NYT really objects too.
A couple weeks after my last dog died, I heard him outside the sliding glass door of my deck and looked up. He was there, looking back. I blinked. He wasn't there. That was weird too.

Because Ann's job and retirement are part of that 30%...
No, I didn't.
That's fascinating.
Maybe the NYT could also run a piece explaining why and how crazy Javier was able to turn an economic basket case back into something resembling a first world country, while every single one of those "socialist" governments have driven their economies into debt, disaster and poverty.
Nah. Let's stick with "He's a wierdo" and run some more of the brilliant economic wisdom of Paul Krugman.
Conan the Barkbarian, what is best in life:
To defeat inflation,
To see Government debt recede before you,
And to hear the lamentations of the unjustly enriched politicians.
It's a mentalist thing. She can tell from the animal's body language what it's feeling. No mind reading required.
