"... on Washington Square whose only bathroom was in an outside hall. They had no children, just a cat named Arthur. Nivison devoted herself to her husband’s career. She served as his secretary, business manager and ever-willing model, posing in guises that ranged from a slender ingĂ©nue to a burlesque stripper and a melancholy movie usherette in a blue uniform.... She described her husband as a grump and a bully unwilling to acknowledge her artistic talents. In a diary entry from 1941, she confided that she would be delighted to have him 'choked or smothered or roasted until he had been forced to make some slight gesture of concern for my concerns.' At a time when the Metropolitan Museum’s joint exhibition of Lee Krasner and Jackson Pollock is focusing attention on the plight of artists’ wives, it makes sense to think about Nivison.... Unlike Krasner, Nivison... did not have much left for her own artwork.... But it would be nice if someone published her diaries and pointed out that she was a brilliant and witty writer."
I agree! Let's read the diaries of Jo Nivison. The wife of a famous artist put in writing the idea that he should be
choked or smothered or roasted. Seems promising. You can read them on line
here, and see her artwork — which Solomon bemoans as "tepid" —
here. I click randomly and got this:

Today's theme is full of crap.
I was just thinking of toilet-trained horses two days ago. Why not?
Click bait for Tucker!
Behind every successful man is a resentful woman. Counter examples welcomed...

Stallions can be toilet-trained....sorta, kinda. Geldings not so much.
Testosterone hath its uses.
Visited an exhibition of Hopper's works in Bologna years ago. His visual depiction of beautiful solitude to that brink just short of dark despair still impresses and endures.
First sighting of Bojack Horseman?
Perhaps she was the one who inspired those feelings of loneliness. She must definitely have enhanced them.
Hopper became a "brand," instantly recognizable and meaningful, but only (I think) after he had died.
"Arguing" that an artist was "deeply influenced by his times" doesn't seem like much of an insight or anything worth "arguing" about. I'd suggest that he was "deeply influenced" by a later time when loneliness and alienation were more in vogue.
If I recall from the Edward Hopper biography, Jo ceased sexual relations with her husband shortly after their marriage and then insisted on being his sole model, clothed or nude, for the remainder of his life. So the artist came by his loneliness honestly.
She draws like Yoko Ono sings.
Jo Nivison sounds and reads like Joy Division.
Which would be a great soundtrack for viewing Hopper.

Oh no!...yet another oppressed woman. Will this persecution never end?
The un-lonely people in "Nighthawks" are the couple sitting together, though them seemed rather bored with each other.
"...beautiful solitude to that brink just short of dark despair still impresses and endures."
Can we despair of the reheated cut-and-paste style yet?
"First sighting of Bojack Horseman?"
Oh, I certainly hope not.
I realize that cartoon is intended as a satire on faded action movie stars, but isn't the real Steven Seagal badinov?
A jackass sitting on the john, inside a water closet, braying for a tidy poll.
Hopper was an introvert who got married at 41. She cant say she was fooled about him. He was probably grumpy and quiet on the Honeymoon.
The Wall Street Journal ran a review of this book. Their review didn’t mention his mistreatment of his wife.
Bojack Horseman was pretty good until the original story line came to an end and they started using it as a woke pulpit.
Man: ok ok I’ll marry you.
Woman: fine, You bastard!
Ok, I said the above, my first wife was a psychotic terror and my second was a wonderful Northwestern grad. So I married up.
Hopper didn't blossom until he met Jo Nivision and she turned him on to watercolor in Gloucester. A couple years ago there was a Hopper exhibit at Cape Ann showing his architectural landscape and seascape paintings that launched his career and made his move to NYC possible. If only Hitler had such a supportive woman behind him...
The inclusion/exclusion of real information can be used to create the author's intended slant. Like the details of the relationship between Hopper and spouse. The Wikipedia entry of Jodi Mitchell omitted her Morgellon Syndrome (My skin is infested with outer space fibers which make me itchy and miserable, and dermatologists are too stupid to figure out). It is a manifestation of Delusions of Parasitosis, signs of a troubled persona. The DOP interaction, rudely simplified and not including the usual empathy for brevity: DERM: You are crazy. Person: You are stupid. Derm: I called you crazy first.
Morgellons: Person: I have outer space infestation which you do not understand. Derm: You are crazy. Person: I called you stupid first.
Reality: with a good relationship and treatment, both DOP and Morgellons Persons can be made better.
Well, she can draw better than I.
From the article:
"But the advent of telephones and airplanes did not improve life for the people in Hopper’s paintings, who tend to stay up too late and drink too much coffee and dwell on invariably doomy thoughts."
Facts not in evidence!
