"Don't worry about me" is what the daughter said to the father. I originally read the headline to mean that the father was telling us not to worry about him. I do feel sorry for the father. Imagine seeing your daughter, "a noble and polite girl, a Christian," suddenly acting "like an animal," becoming a knife-wielding murderer, and now dead.

Yeah, but she randomly killed a 32 year old bank VP who was just returning from maternity leave. That is one that matters. Horrible.
As I said yesterday, we have reached the the dubious moral point where we refuse to treat the insane seriously.
Mental illness is truly a bitch. I can only imagine how helpless her family felt.

I’m not putting the plight of the perpetrator over the dead or injured stabbing victims here. At the same time, we really haven’t gotten a grip on how to deal with the severely mentally ill, especially when they cycle. Better people than I have failed to get a handle on it.

But in recent months, Mr. Cisneros recalled, his daughter had said she did not want to rely on medication to feel normal.”
Her landlord said she paid her rent on time, no fuss, and that he never heard a peep from her.
The article also said that at one point, years earlier, she had attempted suicide-by-train. Troubled past, apparently in cycles. Not untypical.
Was it planned? It's a small step from entertaining abortive ideation in the privacy of her head to taking affirmative action to relieve her "burdens" of state. That said, we need reasonable blade control.

The exact truth about the mental institutions in this country is that they were set up by people copying English institutions which were set up to permanently confine the mentally ill so that they could not reproduce. It was thought that enough institutionalization would end mental illness because mental illness was genetic ally inherited and institutions would end the inheritance. That's why people were found who had been in there for forty years who merely had Downs syndrome or who had gotten pregnant out of wedlock or who were deaf. A better solution than completely closing down the whole system would have been testing and reviews. The goal would not be permanent institutionalization, regardless. But it would include involuntary confinement for those who were violent or delusional and would not take their meds. And the confinement would not be a repeated two weeks during which they took their meds and emerged from their delusions, only to stop taking meds as soon as they were free so that the whole cycle of delusions and violence began again.
I have sympathy for the victim and her family.
I'm also relieved the police were able to shoot the deranged killer dead.
Otherwise - the court/legal system in NYC(D) would simply let her go.

Had the killer been black, and shot by the police, the NYT's would've turned it into a race issue. Most of the blacks who commit these types of murders, are also mentally ill, and you could write the same type article. "They didn't take their meds, etc." But the MSM will always focus on race when they can.

As I've written elsewhere, if you watch the video the police could have easily tackled her from behind and taken her alive. She looked to be about 5-2 and 160 lbs. And was stupidly waving her kitchen knives in both hands. One taser shot hit her purse. The other hit her fat stomach.
This is an example of the ongoing tragedy of mentally ill people on the streets. Think of the difference that could be made with the money used to support illegal immigrants and to line the pockets of politicians and their consorts.

The dangerously mentally ill should be handled compassionately, and should be treated if there is effective treatment available, but, above all else, they must be taken off the streets and confined where they can't harm the rest of us. Our treatment of these folks for the last 50 years is yet another example of suicidal empathy. There were plenty of well deserved horror stories about the state mental heath hospitals, but emptying them on to the streets yielded poor conditions for the mentally ill, and unleashed the homeless crises, increased open drug use, and senseless murders on our streets and subways.
It's not a recent shift in public policy or a decline in modern morals that abandoned the crazy folks.

Many do a good job of subsidizing people who are already crazy, which attracts more crazy people. So there's that.
Clayton E. Cramer, one of the honest scholars, who challenged Michael Bellesiles' dishonest book about how nobody owned guns in early America (a flood ate my research; oops, I found it again but it's different; someone set fire to my office door, which never happened -- I know intimately that Bellesiles ignored warnings from a better-informed graduate research assistant before publication), also wrote a very moving book about his violent, dangerous, schizophrenic brother, titled My Brother Ron: A Personal and Social History of the Deinstitutionalization of the Mentally Ill. It's such a good and readable and honest and well-researched book. I can't recommend it highly enough. Cramer is the rare scholar (I believe he works outside academia, or did then) who follows the facts objectively, wherever they lead. His parents tried for years to literally use padlocks to protect him from his brother, or cope with guilt as the brother went wild on the streets, where his rights subsumed others' safety.
I had a similar experience, and it is heartbreaking. What the severely mentally ill really need are good institutions where they can have a community of people like them, while protecting us from them.
Every crazy heron needs to have other crazy herons. But they have to be institutionalized so they don't kill random innocent herons. How many years have we all been saying this?

I'll second the recommendation of Clayton Cramer's book. As far as I know he's never worked in academia; I think the situation was he got his degree too late, after being a white male - - make that a *conservative* white male - - was a deal-breaker in academia.

Why do these violent nut jobs congregate in NYC? The city I live in hasn't experienced a murder in a decade. Yet getting punched on the street, stabbed to death, or being pushed into an oncoming subway train seems to be a regular occurrence there.
It is a tragedy for all involved. The mentally ill attacker, the victims and the police who had to bring the insanity to a violent end. For all the living there is heavy sorrow to bear. The dead are in the presence of God. He will judge and comfort. As for society we must do everything within our power to prevent these horrors from stalking and causing havoc within an otherwise peaceable society..
