“They need to be killed,” says Reyhan Higgins, 52, a fishing guide on the Columbia River, brandishing a rubber-bullet gun he uses to deter sea lions from stealing salmon. “I’d shoot them myself if they would ever let us.”ADDED: I see the pronouns are confusing. I should have excerpted the first sentence: “In most Democratic districts, campaigning to slaughter a cute mammal would probably not win many votes. But Marie Gluesenkamp Perez appears to know her electorate.”
On the river, the sea lions are barking with satisfaction after a summer of excess. They heave themselves on to the docks, waddling in search of a comfortable position to rest their swollen bellies. For months they have been feasting on salmon — the fish that is the lifeblood of Chinook, a small town in Washington state.…

"Fat sea lions ruined her town. Now this woman wants to kill them."
Headline at the London Times makes it seem as though the lady is fatphobic.

does Sea Lion meat taste good?
While I'm not a fisherman myself I do have a some friends who fish for salmon on the Columbia River. Like the people in the article, they too are pretty frustrated with the sea lions eating up much of the salmon run every year.
Looks like the London Times is reader-phobic.
I wonder how the guy with the rubber-bullet gun gets away with harassing the wildlife, just wondering. The Columbia River being where it is......
Sea lions are a problem all along the west coast. Making them a protected species might not have been the best idea.
Perhaps the Sea Lion meat can be turned into commercial cat and dog food? Make use of them.
GLP-1 dart guns?
Answer: more Orcas
Here on the east coast, we have so many (federally protected) seals that we have a summer-long great white shark problem, with beach closures becoming the norm. Seal populations on Cape Cod grew from very close to zero in the 1970's to somewhere around 30-50 thousand today. In addition to the shark problem, they have a very negative effect on coastal fishing - I have had a seal take a decent striped bass off of my line in a coastal river mouth.

Answer: more Orcas"
Unlike the sea lions the orca can't survive in the fresh water below the Bonneville Dam where the sea lions congregate. That and they will eat the salmon too.

Ask a Sea Lioness
Fat Sea Lion (stay away, baby)
Fat Sea Liyun (stay away, baby)
I could shoot you so (oh no)
I could shoot you so (oh no)

Fat Sea Liyun, I-yuh could shoot you so-o-oh!
h/t Bill Medley
Reyhan Higgins, “he.”
So the Sea Lions act like welfare recipients.. who knew!
Well, the sea lions were there first after all.
Maybe if the fishermen did a land/sea acknowlegment before heading out to hunt them things would be cool.
…sorry those people, my family, and their compatriots are all crazy. not enough salmon to take and it’s the fault of the natives with their paddled catching contraptions and weirs, tear disn all the dams, those effing sea lions…these are the people who own one if the fifty ocean trawlers lined up in the marina under the bridge in Portland, who drive up to Riggins to stand literally rubbing shoulders with a thousand other line fishermen, then tie up their jet boats from one bank to the other in Lewiston to slow troll jigs and eggs….but yah blame the sea lions
Isn’t there some kind of annual review by whatever dumb ass federal agency that’s responsible for monitoring “endangered species” to remove those that are no longer endangered?
On a related note twice in the last two weeks I’ve seen a bald eagle fly over my neighborhood. Same time on successive Wednesday nights.
Cool.
Summary of article by the London Times...."A row over a ballooning population of sea lions gorged on salmon has gone all the way to Capitol Hill, and one Democrat’s bloodlust is winning over Trump voters"
Geeze...does everything have to do with Trump? You can hate the sea lions without being a "Trump Voter"
We have family who live on the coasts in Northern Ca and Oregon. The over population of Sea Lions is a genuine pain the @ss. Not only are they gorging on the Salmon and causing troubles for the fishing industry....not to mention the depredation of the salmon runs. They swarm over and damage the docks, lay on them by the hundreds. Damage smaller boats. Damage fishing gear. Won't move their big fat butts and are also aggressive.
Shooting them with rubber bullets is a nice way to deter them and better than the alternative. (I bet their skins would make nice jackets though. Think seal skin coats) Right now many of the sea lions are being poisoned and washing up on the shores due to toxic algae. Maybe nature will kindly help out by reducing the over population of these pests.
If it wasn’t for pests the Democrats wouldn’t have a constituency.
I couldn't read the article and now I am left with questions. I wanted to know who the woman is who wants the sea lions killed since the only person quoted was some man. I did click through and could read the section DBQ quoted and that made me wonder what it had to do with Trump. Is he a comic book villain who can control sea lions and sends them to torment this town?
Are they a burden h/t Obama of state and mind? Is Clancycide a solution, wicked? Maybe, baby. Abort, sequester, and progress no more.
When I first moved to SF the sea lions basking near Pier 39 were a manageable number. Now, the population has ballooned to the point where the animals have taken to having slap fights amongst themselves, vying for space on the docks. They stink to high heaven and as their numbers have risen the stench can be quite off-putting on those rare, but glorious summer-like days in September and October. I agree their numbers need to be culled. I love the idea of cat food. Why not?
Beached with comorbidity. There's a virus and vaxxxine to relieve that burden of state... and mind.
Enviromentalism and "Love of endangered animals" is often thinly disguised class warfare. I'm sure quite a few well-to-do urbanites are happy this town is being ruined for the sea lions. Maybe some good real estate bargins in the future.
Cute marine mammals with the voraciousness of sharks, the disgusting hygiene of pigs, the body mass of cows, and the fecundity of rabbits. It would do no harm at all to the ecosystem to shoot 90 percent of them on sight, and would be extremely helpful to recovery of the salmon stocks.

There is indeed, and the innumerable California sea lions are not only off the endangered list, they are a "Least Concern" species. The Steller's sea lion has a more northerly range but it does overlap with the California variety along much of the West Coast. They are in the "Near Threatened" category. Neither falls under the Endangered Species Act.
However, both of them are separately protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act, because girls think they are cute.
Bring in the Somalis.
It would be unpatriotic to kill sea lions or say that we are the fat sea lions of the animal world.
Bears fatten up on salmon too. I’ve seen dashcam footage of a black bear so fat it resembled a hippo.
“ Sea Lions the size of salmon sucked on salmon the size of orcas and ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes, coveting the deepest of the sterile rivers like packs of seals assaulting the rubber bullets of Love-Me Avenue. “

Speaking of fat bears, it's Fat Bear Week!
I just know Gutfeld is going to include this in his monologue, with a punch line that references The View. CC, JSM
The sea lions are small potatoes compared to the Tribes' gill nets strewn all across the river.
George Boldt is asshoe.
Sure, the fat ones ruined her town. But the thin ones are OK. They spend their free time at the Yoga studio.
