The first line of defense is actually the trash can. I'm amazed at how much stuff is carried into our house. Literally tons of things carried by hand every year. An amazing amount of unpaid work.
Last November I fat fingered the Amazon app and accidentally ordered a single russet potato for 63 cents. It was delivered the same day. No shipping charge. It was delivered in a brown paper bag. I repurposed the bag as a small trash container.
I've always liked mudrooms, but I don't have one. The garage serves some of that purpose, but it would be nice to have one indoors; ideally, a small room next to the door leading to the garage.
But I would not classify the areas in the photos as either mudrooms or dirty zones. Maybe the Post should have ventured out to look at the homes of people who routinely track in mud.
My brother once visited the home of one of his high school track teammates. The mom had set up gold velvet ropes to divide the part of the house where the males were allowed from the clean, neat areas where they were not (except for special occasions). Nobody thought it was a bad idea.

Your daily posts seem to often have a theme that runs through them. Today's theme seems to be the pointlessness of WaPo.
Gosnell would have been well advised to choose red. Green on Vulcan.
Not to mention disguising the literal shit everybody seems to be tracking into hotel rooms and presumably elsewhere.
Alternatively one could break down the Amazon boxes and put them into the recycle bin.
