Said Sam Harris.

"The fact that [Jason Arday] was promoted as some kind of prodigy given how crazy his self-representation was is a sign of just how cultic and confused the left and left-leaning institutions have become."
"I mean, it's just it's just a sign of the the cancer having spread everywhere.... I mean, it's just, this is all, anti-racism.... This is putting the black — the BLM black — square not only in your bio but in your brain. Um, it's a cult. It's always been a cult. It's been obvious for for about a decade now that this is what we're witnessing is the the ramifications of a moral panic around race and social justice that got engineered on the left.... It's intolerable and if we don't get our heads clear of its new variant, this this far-left socialist/communist alliance with with Islamism, we're going to go for another round of right-wing ascendancy in America and elsewhere.... [Cambridge was] totally corrupt in its desperation to believe that somebody who checks all the identitarian boxes is a you know is... some kind of you know woke superhero.... I mean, you're you're in the presence of a lunatic who's making these claims about himself, right?... The social justice hysteria around race that has occurred in the last decade has been almost totally dishonest almost. I mean, this is the just Jussie Smollettification of everything, right?"

The white left's race-based efforts are demeaning to blacks.
Class-disordered ideologies (e.g. racism) under the Diversity umbrella. Affirmative discrimination as policy under DEI.
That said, diversity of individuals, minority of one. #HateLovesAbortion
Every single day I pray for more "right wing ascendancy" in America. Keep in mind, that a shorter synonym for that is "sanity".
Sure, it's a hysterical cult. But also a ruthless, rational political project, now being radicalized in woke 2.0. The near-destruction of Cambridge is a feature, not an unfortunate unintended consequence. They aim to destroy. Bring down the empire, as jihadi DSA-ers say. We righties understand and resist. But in the end it will be up to the "moderate" normies to decide if they'll join us or submit. Outcome not clear.
We must not waiver in our support for Israel! They are the one country doing something about this threat that the Muslims pose, by killing them!
But here is another idea, why don’t we stop bombing the crap out of their countries, creating millions of angry refugees and then complaining that they just don’t stay in these countries to either starve or be killed by a bomb?
Israel knows their brand is crap except among white Christian boomers, so they will convince us that we are not voting for them and their genocide using our weapons and treasure, oh no, we are fighting commies!
Donald Trump recently said that the Federal government needs the money that we are spending on Medicare to fight wars for Israel. No wonder progressives are gaining traction.
A selfie-abortion... Hamasidol. That said, social justice anywhere is injustice everywhere.
It won’t be over until Derek Chauvin is a free man.
Tacitus said that the surest harbinger of war and misery is the discovery of great wealth. It the Muslims were not living on top of huge oil deposits, we would have left them alone and how they lived would be up to them. Millions fewer Muslim refugees, just recently Israel created another million homeless Lebanese in order to take their land. What would you do if you were in their shoes?
It’s clear that academia and the ultra left have been completely captured and driven insane but the cult of anti racism. A purge and reformation of higher education is long overdue,
Jaq, what does Arday have to do with Israel? Both names start with a vowel?
It will be an “Ascendancy of Normal”, Sammy boy!
Three words:
"Sociology of Education"
Arday was a Professor of Sociology of Education
John Henry
Is there any limit to how much or how long you can get things wrong before you lose credibility on the left? It's like getting things right doesn't matter at all.
Related: How is Joe Scarborough still opining on TV? Who is dumb enough to watch that for insight?
It's unfair to be picky about facts in sociology anyway.
Sam Harris has no room to criticize anyone for picking and choosing what facts to believe and what facts ignore as well as what fictions to incorporate when constructing his own reality and then insisting everyone else subscribe to his views or be vilified in the strongest terms.
Has he forgotten his stated opposition to freedom of speech and the press if it led to outcomes he didn't approve of? Has he forgotten that he himself has been called crazy by erstwhile friends and allies for this?
Even here he couldn't not blame Trump and Trump supporters for every problem. The guy should go off and hoe potatoes in silence at a remote monastery somewhere.
Read the claims Kim Jong-un, the fat little creep running North Korea, spews. Olympic champion, climbed the highest NK mountain in street shoes... No one, unless staring down the barrel of a gun would believe that clap-trap. In fact people of the west laugh at the absurdity of these preposterous boasts.
But millions of lefties stick their heads in the sand and jointly murmur "racist" when facing similar any question of similar claims by Aldey.
Cancer is such a lousy analogy for this kind of thing because it's not contagious. It's more like a virus, spreading from universities, to companies, scientific organizations, NGOs and government institutions. Cancer can't do that.
I'm Irish Catholic or, anyway, more Irish Catholic than anything else. So far as I know, I have never been discriminated against because of my ethnicity. I presume that those rare people who don't like me are envious of my good look and moral splendor and that it has nothing to do with my ethnicity. That wasn't always the case. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, Irish Catholics were actively discriminated against in America and Great Britain. During the Gordon Riots in London, they were actively hunted down and beaten to death. The London chairmen--those were the guys who hauled people around in chairs, not the corporate chairmen--were mostly Irish Catholic. The London mob broke up their chairs and beat them to death with the staves..........All that was in another time and another place, and it would be an affectation for me to hold a grudge or to pretend to have any kind of victim status.........I have the vague sense that the enrollment in both the teacher and student ranks at Cambridge is not in line with their proportion to the British population. The Irish in Great Britain can fairly claim victim status in that country, but I don't see how proportional representation at Cambridge would right any wrongs. And the Irish don't have the consolation of being overly represented on the soccer team.........I understand that the wounds against Blacks are deeper and fresher than the wounds against the Irish, but what's the therapeutic value of putting them in positions that they're not qualified for
@Bob Boyd, I was wondering if this might be a case of Sam Harris' attempt at reversion-to-the-mean, having been so humiliated for his past embrace of stupid ideas (ridiculing COVID-19 'conspiracy theories' and support of Kamala Harris).
@Jaq: The greatest purveyor of Muslim refugees and Muslim casualties was Assad. There are over 6.5 million Syrian refugees. In his efforts to remain in power, Assad was responsible for the deaths of 600,000 Syrians. Assad didn't have a great press in the West, but I don't recall him being accused of genocide. I suppose he'll live ot his days in peace and affluence in Russia and that, unlike Salman Rushdie, he doesn't worry about Iranian sponsored fatwa attempt on his life.
I agree with Bob Boyd at 10:26.
Harris made his bones as an “intellectual” atheist. (My ex was a big fan). His arguments struck me as arrogant and self-serving. He picked convenient facts to buttress his arguments and completely ignored facts that disputed his views.
Sam Harris and his TDS contributed to the problem. He's full of shit. This is like AOC trying to distance herself from Woke #1. Or, Chris Cuomo trying to deny he ever shamed the unvaccinated, and vilified Ivermectin. They are all doing the ritual Pontius Pilate handwashing.
Yes, of course, they wanted a black guy, and one who conformed to their preconceptions about black people and blackness. They were also looking for someone who had a compelling backstory. Looking at photos of Arday, I wonder how he presented himself, how he came across to other people, and what his interactions with them were like. Didn't they think there may have been something "off" or "not quite right" about the guy? Was Oxbridge's traditional tolerance of eccentricity a factor in keeping him around and promoting him?
Arday was a conman, but what kind of conman was he? There's a waif-like quality to the man that doesn't fit with the hardened, cynical image of most conmen. The idea that the grifter's victims really want to be victims of the grift seems to fit too. Waiting for the eventual movie to sort things out for us.
I wonder how many Jason Ardays are elevated and employed at UW Madison? I'm sure it's a lot more than one.
"I was wondering if this might be a case of Sam Harris' attempt at reversion-to-the-mean,"
Probably, but he's calling for people to be accountable, so he should be too. He should tend to the beam in his own eye. In the mean time he should tend the potatoes...long hours in a humble and isolated patch.
Sam Harris, still a militant atheist? The problem has always been that when you seek to replace the Biblical Christianity upon which The West was based with the nothing of atheism, you create a vacuum that will be filled with something. The something is always inferior to what it replaces. Militant islam, marxism, or what-have-you all seek to fill that vacuum and the result is what we are facing. What is true for politics is true for life in general; you can't beat something with nothing.
Sam Harris is the same type of fake intellectual as Jason Arday and thousands of others in "higher" education. I see no difference.
Theism is God-based. Atheism is god-based.
"Cancer is such a lousy analogy for this kind of thing because it's not contagious."
Those who use this analogy should be understood to be envisioning the institution as a body. So academia has a cancer. It's in there growing insidiously and something difficult needs to be done to prevent the "body" from dying. The body is all of academia.
Harris kept speaking in terms of how belief in Arday was possible, as if dearly wanting to believe was the answer.
It seems to me that you've got to consider that they did not believe. Harris recognizes that Arday's account of himself was impossible to believe (and his education and achievements were very low). Why not make the final step and just say those Cambridge academics simply did not believe. They did something they wanted to do that stood on its own and didn't depend on believing Arday was any good at all.
And by the way, I think Arday knew that. I wish he'd hung on and figured out how he could get his revenge on them for boosting him and setting him up for the humiliation he experienced.
"I wish he'd hung on and figured out how he could get his revenge on them for boosting him and setting him up for the humiliation he experienced."
Yeah, well, the problem is, he was a stupid moron. So, that wasn't going to happen. See how that works? Not in our stars.
Plus, he wanted the part, he auditioned for it, and he played it to the best of his limited ability. Don't expect your pet Negroes to play by your White Privilege rules.
Apropos of which, it appears that even fairly intelligent Negroes just don't "get" the plagiarism rule. You're supposed to write a "thesis" to get the shiny thing you have been taught to want, but you have no idea what that is. Fortunately, there are loads of examples, many in exactly the field you are pretending to study. But you're not supposed to copy one of those examples. Just like you're not supposed to run with the basketball. Stupid rule. MLK got away with it! These silly White rules don't apply to us, and anyway, nobody checks.
Cancer can be contagious, just not in humans so far... Tasmanian Devils are dying out because of Devil Facial Tumor Disease. They bite each other in the face while mating and pass along the disease. Since the mid-nineties the Devil population has dropped about 80%
"Jaq, what does Arday have to do with Israel? Both names start with a vowel?"
Some people just can't help themselves. Pro tip- scroll wheel.
"Those who use this analogy should be understood to be envisioning the institution as a body. So academia has a cancer. It's in there growing insidiously and something difficult needs to be done to prevent the "body" from dying. The body is all of academia."
Maybe, but it has spread far and wide of academia, infecting many other institutions, no? So I stand by my initial take: bad analogy.
Nick Confas is Jewish. Six degrees of separation takes over from there.
“ Maybe, but it has spread far and wide of academia, infecting many other institutions, no?”
If that is what someone is trying to say by using the analogy, he means that all of society is the body.
I just don't see the point in recruiting guys that look like Arday to be either students or professors at Cambridge. Recruitment and advancement of unqualified people is far more likely to increase rather than diminish prejudice. I don't think ethnic Catholics have any kind of edge by way of affirmative action or, at the other end of the spectrum, the cultural advantage of Brahmins, Jews, haute WASPS, etc. They're probably not overly represented at elite institutions but neither are they overly aggrieved by their absence at those institutions. Maybe that should be the beau ideal, ....... You just can't compensate people for all the wrongs and inequities that they are doomed to suffer, and the efforts to do so more often than not just comound those wrongs or establish fresh new wrongs.
It wasn't really about believing the things about Arday. It was about those Cambridge academics believing things about themselves, that they were good and virtuous, that they had great powers to change the world without any real effort, simply by words and proclamations and issuing credentials, that they were doing important, meaningful things with their lives and energies and good fortune. It was really an exercise in vanity. They used him. I wish he'd hung around too.
"They used him."
Yes, and he used them. Which is pretty amazing, since all of them were useless.
"I wish he'd hung around too."
I assume you mean this like Althouse does, namely that Arday could somehow have held his enablers accountable. How do you see that working? They all get fired, and he gets to stick around like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, now that he has proven his utility? The problem is, Arday is a one-trick reindeer. It's not like he could fool another batch of credulous white academics. While his incompetence and dishonesty discredits them, it discredits him too. He apparently decided he didn't want to see that movie.
Don't forget, Arday tried to get the police to harass the people who discovered his fabrications, with some success, and also sicced his lawyers on a reporter to prevent publication of the truth about him. He wasn't just incompetent and dishonest, he was also vicious.
"I assume you mean this like Althouse does, namely that Arday could somehow have held his enablers accountable. How do you see that working? They all get fired, and he gets to stick around..."
Samson in the temple?
The left are consumed with "You're all racists!"
Tired.
Jaq'n off to Jew hate no matter what the topic. RCO off to the side asking him if he needs more lube while he holds up a nude photo of Netanyahu to really work up the rage-boner.
They used him, he used them
but none of ‘em cared
They were getting their share
Working on their Dupe Moves
Jamie, isn't that what he did do? Samson did not survive his attack on the temple.
