Yeah, I always wondered how a noisy destroyer could have snuck up on a PT boat. PT Boat is not only faster but much more maneuverable yet the Destroyer managed to T-Bone it.
One story I read, supposedly from someone who knew, was that they were just drifting along underminimal power when they saw the destroyer. Kennedy jammed the throttles full forward.
The Packard engines required that throttles be advanced slowly. Going straight to full throttle flooded the engines causing them to flood and stall.
I think it was Roosevelt who said that he had to either give them a medal or a court-martial. Anyone not named Kennedy would have been courtmartialed.
