The cellular mitosis between the Dems and DSA must happen. The DSAs have willed either (1) an overthrow of the moderate old timers or (2) a genuine split. The aging, fading 20th century Dems can now only choose between joining the right to moderate it, or sitting on the sidelines until they pass away.
Given the DSA's hated for Manchin, Sinema, and Fetterman, they have chosen an ideologically pure and militant 40 years in the wilderness. The next generation of government stands to be controlled by the emerging Clinton Dems-MAGA coalition. Except for the deep blue pockets -- they stand to become theme parks, zoo exhibits, and examples for cautionary nostalgia tales.
This is not a guy for whom I would have voted. His politics are not mine.
That said, while I don't know details about his medical practices, I do not in theory have a problem with a cash set up for a practice, or a subscription based model. I would like to see us get back to more of that. And I personally have participated in subscription-based health care in two states (Delaware and now Florida). The care is more personalized and the included testing, in my experience with the practices with which I have been involved, is more thorough. My current primary provider allows for unlimited sick visits (don't need that--at least yet, thank God) and also has its own urgent care, the services of which are included in my subscription. You can get same day or next day appointments, the office staff all know you. Appointments aren't rushed, and there is time for thorough planning of longer term health-care goals. It is not managed care, it's personal care. The model is much more akin to what we had prior to the rise of HMOs and PPOs in the '80s and '90s.
So while I wouldn't support this guy politically, if that's the sort of practice he's running (and many do take care of poorer people on a sliding scale), I'm not going to whack him for that just FOR that.
If the establishment finds the 15,000 votes they run the risk of the younger DSA members going public with the questionable ballot harvesting ops the Dems have been using for years. Donald Trump would be right so Stevens will take her medicine and get a nice sinecure for her silence.
Interesting that Stevens won Wayne County, which includes Detroit and Dearborn. Apparently El-Sayed is not popular with blacks.
Also, it seems the non-anti-Semitic vote was split: A third candidate, Mallory McMorrow, who had suspended her campaign in July got 4% of the vote, while El-Sayed has a 1% edge on Stevens. McMorrow is a progressive who acknowledges that Hamas started the war against Israel.
It seems that if the current Democratic party is left, Al-Sayed and the DSA should be at least far left.
Back in the day of Clintonian triangulation, Gallup polling showed Democrats were a remarkably centrist, big tent party--25% liberal, 48% moderate, and 25% conservative.
Today, Democrats are 55% liberal, 34% moderate, and 9% conservative.
The medical practices I'm talking about are the antithesis of socialized medicine and corporate-managed care. I see that as a good thing, not a bad thing.
But then I also chose to go with Medigap, not Medicare advantage. Yes, it costs more, but I can choose any doctor I want, I don't need referrals or pre-approvals for the vast majority of things, and I'm never out-of-network no matter where I go. Worth every penny, and I'm lucky I can afford it (at least so far).

This guy loses 75% of the Black vote, loses 75% of the Jewish vote, loses 75% of the rural White vote and still manages to squeak by in the Democratic primary (where Black and Jewish votes are close to 35% of the total cast). He wins by a few thousand votes out of a few million cast. Something feels off about this result.

Having been inundated by their ads for the last month or two, the problem with Haley Stevens is that she is also repellent. El-Sayed won big in the college towns: Ann Arbor, (East) Lansing, Kalamazoo. The strange result is that he won big in Grand Rapids. That was always a Republican area, but maybe the Democrats there are as wacko as anywhere else. The same for the UP and Traverse City area.

With a 15,000 vote difference it's entirely possible that cross-over voting put him over the top, but it seems unlikely to me that there were so many republican votes so as to make the race close in the first place.

1) El-Sayed is charismatic and a bit of a chameleon. He can sound like a radical when in front of activists, and he sounds every bit like a safe, "he's one of us!" Columbia- and Oxford-trained policy wonk when speaking to Democrat donors and moderates. A lot of women swoon at the idea of a good-looking, well-spoken, young-ish doctor.
2) Haley Stevens comes across as "weird," unlikeable, and unsophisticated, regardless of her policies. She is another weak candidate from a major party. Once again, the question must be asked: In a state with millions of people, is this really the best candidate that the establishment can find?
3) Michigan has open primaries. How many Republicans voted for a radical Democrat on the assumption that he would fail spectacularly in a general election?
Taken together, it really is a surprise that Stevens did as well as she did, but who knows what that means for November?

The Democrats have a path to a Senate majority without Michigan. However, aside from El-Sayed's strength as a candidate, he is going to force Republicans to spend even more money in the general election, which might create opportunities for Democrats in states that are viewed as longer shots (Alaska, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas). Although recent Texas polling shows Talarico moving ahead of Paxton.

I voted in the Michigan Dem primary, and voted for Haley, because while I understand the logic of voting for the radical to help in the general, I think it's risky and don't want an El-Sayed type to be a viable candidate at all. But here we are!

I think this is right. One of the tactics the dem/left uses to defend their vote totals is to ridicule the idea of "a vast, well organized conspiracy" to commit election fraud. These people are zealots; they're risking arrest, after all. And it'd be no surprise for them to be El-Sayed supporters.

The two claims are not incompatible. In fact they are complementary. As you note somewhat awkwardly, in order to issue a ballot you have to have an entry in the voter registration system. And there is no need to assume the illegal alien is the person who is actually filling out the ballot when it can be mailed anywhere and deposited in an unverifiable drop box.
