"I'm not sure why WaPo covered this, but ignored trump wearing a wig that is styled like his mother's hair during her last year of life."

That's the top-rated comment (by far) on the WaPo article, "Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she’s freezing her eggs/The Democratic congresswoman, 36, said she made the decision to undergo the fertility procedure to 'feel more in control of my life'" (gift link).

I was trying to figure out whether and how to blog the AOC story. I saw her video yesterday:

I haven't seen such a display of political abdominal flesh since the days of LBJ and his gall bladder surgery:

Still wondering how to blog that. But what's all this about Trump and his wig?

Why? Because IVF is just about the only 80 - 20 issue the Democrats have. The Republicans bloviate that "life begins at conception" and that girl bosses are "old" once they turn thirty. Trump tried to steer the GOP in the right direction by clearly stating his support for IVF and publicly opposing any efforts to restrict access but the freaks got to him.

I hope Trump supports AOC. It's a good look for him and he can go back to calling her stupid tomorrow.

I think the thing on blogging/commenting in the subject… the decision on having children is a deeply personal thing. Society as a whole may have an interest in reproduction, but who, when, and how is best left to the individual.

With AOC, reproductive rights are a subject that she uses politically (and she’s far from alone), so it is tempting to weigh in on her choices. However, this decision of hers, which she is making public, is mostly none of our business. As another noted, is this about an aging woman trying to stay reproductively viable or a social media stunt to get attention? That question seems bloggable, but then that’s giving her the attention that IMO she shouldn’t be seeking on this personal matter.

Avoidance of maternity leave.

Personally I don't care. If this is what AOC wants, she should go for it. I have family that had fertility issues and IVF was the solution, twice.

I can do without any updates though. And I think that young women that forgo childbirth to 'pursue a career' are poorly informed, or maybe even self-delusional. I've seen too many women be highly successful at doing both at the same time, to not believe that it's at least partly self-indulgence.

And she embarrassed herself at Davos (I think it was Davos) when asked a serious foreign policy question. But people pay attention to her and she’s kind of a genius of self-promotion. To a woman, it's quite obvious that AOC's competing against Usha [Vance] and Karoline Leavitt. Her problem is she's too busy being authentic for voters in Election 2028 to go through a pregnancy right now. She'll do that when she wins and Team Auto Pen starts doing the work. But she doesn't want to put all her eggs in one basket, i.e., depend on having viable eggs in her womb in November 2028 after campaign-trail food, lack of sleep and a state of constant hyper-alertness. The eggs might just refuse any further contact with the world.. So, AOC's saving some pre-campaign eggs in a freezer.

She isn't great at self-promotion - the hack Soviet Press is.

One thing that I've noticed is that when she goes on network TV, she looks great. The hair and make-up people do a very nice job of making her look nice.

When she does her own videos, at home, she looks horrible. Her face looks fat. The whole thing is awkward and ridiculous.

But she has a very natural and warm persona. And, as Peachy points out, the ridiculous softball questions help. That is not an adversarial interview in the slightest.

At 11:39, the reporter finally starts with real questions. First there's a montage of Republicans warning us about Communism. Then there's the news (to me) that the national DSA party withdrew its endorsement of AOC in 2024. More on that here.

And then the reporter reads all the crazy Commie shit in the DSA platform. And he asks AOC if she agrees with it. And she says, simply, "No."

I'm actually really glad that she broke with the national DSA party, and that she's a Zionist who thinks Israel has a right to exist. That's a huge step up in normality, in my book. Is she running for president, or Chuck Schumer's seat? One or the other, I suspect.

Saint Croix said...

It sounds like she's an unannounced candidate for president.

A (DSA) meeting to decide on a plan to back a presidential candidate, most likely Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, turned acrimonious, and a proposal to poll members was rejected.

Saint Croix said...

Her allies in New York wanted to poll all the members of the DSA to see who the organization ought to endorse for president in 2028. And the national party did not want to do that. Because the leaders were afraid AOC is too popular and they would be forced to endorse her.

AOC was one of the first, if not the first, member of the DSA to punk the Progressives I think. When she appeared on the scene, she was being sold as the fresh new face of the Democratic Party, the Next Generation ! Much excitement followed. Since her first appearance, she has had excellent grooming and wardrobe support, considering her background as a barista and bartender. Not to mention her digs, her Tesla, and so on.

All of that bling and Central Casting support materialized as a result of Progressive indulgence, back in the heady days of unlimited cash flow from unmentionable sources. She was their Poster Baby. And since she's won re-election, she has shifted away from the Party line, formed The Squad, and now more recently started more clearly asserting her DSA credentials. So she has really punked the Progressives, rode them to a solid position within the party, and is now ready to take it to the next level. I doubt she'll be their candidate though - she's dumber than a sack full of hammers.

Aggie, I usually very strongly agree with you. But her health insurance is paid by us. We are her employer. We are paying for this. And we have no access to their level of care. I can't afford vital things I need to stay alive. I live in doctors' offices, doctors who see me for less than four minutes, and more than 50% of our pre-tax money is going for this version of self-employed medical insurance, while denying us geographically and also of paying out of pocket but also for catastrophic care, which worked very well for us for years but was taken away as a choice by Obamacare.

We're going broke as she is the modern version of Marie Antoinette playing milkmaid with her ovaries. At our expense.

We would have a much more realistic federal debate about healthcare if all elected officials - heck, all government employees, from janitors to educators to Congresscritters, had only the choices they impose on the rest of us. They have no right to unions: no public employee should be allowed to have unions, except in the limited capacity of civil suits for dangerous jobs to offset liability -- firemen, EMTs, cops, construction and educators. They need to understand the consequences of their choices, including the choice to go for an easy, richly-funded government job.

Congresscritters is a much underused but once very popular term. I don't know its origin, maybe Pogo.

Tina Trent said...

I remember when I was on the other side, and we were having a hearing about adding all sorts of birth control and expensive egg-freezing type measures as requirements to Georgia health insurance laws. I approached someone I once considered a neanderthal -- I was 24 -- and I tried to talk "equality" to him. He chewed me up and said that we needed to make healthy people pay for their own choices, and if we kept sticking crap on insurance, nobody could afford it for avoidable needs. As he basically put it, 'if the unmarried kids and gays want to have unprotected sex, why are we paying for that? Why isn't it better to make them deal with the consequences? We'd have less consequences. Birth control and condoms are cheap.' He added his written exceptions, such as sickness, domestic and child abuse, and violence.

He was right. Black Democrat from South Georgia. I was wrong.

Okay, suppose it's an IQ test. And it's AOC, 2026, answering the questions, versus Joe Biden, 2024. And you had to bet real money. Joe Biden's been to law school. AOC has been to bartending school. All right? Joe Biden is a lawyer, and he's been around smart people all his life. But he's got fucking dementia. Right? Plus he wasn't that smart in the first place. The man cheated his way through school. He stole speeches from other people.

AOC went to BU, she graduated cum laude with a double major (foreign relations and economics). She went Marxist is school. I suspect school made her dumber. But she's got a lot of street smarts. She will make gaffes and say the wrong thing, or be unable to answer some question. But still, in an IQ test versus Joe Biden? I would bet money that she would do better than he would.

She has a real working-class background. And her net worth is still low. She rents an apartment in NYC and in D.C. At some point she'll raise a lot of money for a political campaign, and then keep it.

That tax the rich dress? Her Marxism is stupid but as a strategy, that dress was a fantastic idea. She's done nothing as a Congresswoman, and the gaps in her knowledge are very large. But she's a smart campaigner. Way more dangerous than Kamala Harris.

Comments should go up immediately... unless you're commenting on a post older than 4 days. Then you have to wait for us to moderate you through. It's also possible to get shunted into spam by the machine. We try to keep an eye on that and release the miscaught good stuff. We do delete some comments, but not for viewpoint... for bad faith. Also: No italics, even briefly. Use asterisks for emphasis. And don't play with the format by changing fonts or using boldface or all caps. Never include more than one extra line break between paragraphs.
