History shows police body cameras absolve the police much more commonly than the perpetrators. Since the left supports violent perpetrators, body cameras are just a talking point, not a priority.

I can't believe I agree with the obese whatever that is, but body cameras are non negotiable. They produce exonerating proof 99.9% of the time, but it won't matter a bit to any of them.
If you pull a knife on a cop who is arresting you, and then stab the cop and then get shot, and the police officer has a body camera, you will still be dead and the cop will still have acted correctly under the circumstances.
None of those fools seems to appreciate the principle that when a police officer tells you that you are under arrest, you are under arrest. Resisting arrest is a crime, even if the cop is wrong. Resorting to force to resist arrest, especially wielding a deadly weapon, means you get shot.
If we did not have this rule, we would have absolute chaos. Why would anyone want to be a cop, and why would any criminal not simply flee any attempt at arrest?

A big backfire resulting from the 2020 Floyd/BLM riots was the demand by the rioters and their supporters that police start wearing body cameras. They insisted that this would allow recording of the police brutality they alleged was rampant throughout the country.
In the years since, the use of body cameras has done the exact opposite… it has shown the lawlessness and idiocy of miscreants and, usually, the patience shown by police in their interactions with the criminal element.

I was working the march last night that ended at an event venue where the mayor supposedly was. Iirc, the woman pictured single handedly paused the match at that venue. There was a very odd 10 minutes where a power struggle transpired between the trad megaphone enabled vs skeptical but oddly powerful solo persona played for control..I wondered if she was family of the deceased or what. I've been to at many protests and never seen this.
It makes perfect sense Madison doesn’t have cameras. Plaintiffs lawyers sue the police over bullshit and can extort a settlement.
Read the Scott v Harris 2007 Supreme Court case. When the dash board camera provides the relevant video, then the plaintiffs version of events is ignored.

This is a report of a third-hand comment, so take it for what it is worth. But an acquaintance told me his friend was a cop who favored body cameras. "You confront someone who starts acting up, and you tap the camera and say, 'You are being filmed.' " They calm right down.

Where do you get these bullshit "facts"? I searched quite extensively and all I discovered is that apparently nobody knows.
There are a lot of things I might think re: Althouse, but one thought that would never enter my mind unbidden is that she is "supporting rioters." Thinking over the more than 23 years I've been reading this blog, this strikes me as complete nonsense. Perhaps people are misreading things?
Now, as for body cams, I have come to the position that they should be mandatory in most cases. As noted by others, in most cases this will be to the benefit of law enforcement when incidents happen. When this is not the case, we should know in a transparent fashion. Weeding out the bad apples is directly beneficial to the good apples (the majority), in my opinion.
Freder, it is difficult to tell how many cops have been exonerated by bodycam video because there are thousands of LE agencies, each with separate, usually confidential, complaint processes. They might each have somewhat readily-available statistics for complaints-in/complaints-sustained/complaints-unsustained. But more granular than that, such as giving the exact reasons for unsustained complaints? Probably not.
Even in the criminal context, you are dealing with at least 52 separate judicial systems. And accusations that never get to any kind of public paper (warrants, indictments, informations) are kept even closer hold than administrative complaints.
We have small sets of statistics from the departments that do release granular results from their complaint processes, and also from police unions who compile the same info while representing officers through those processes. Probably not 99.9%, but certainly showing more exonerations than not. CC, JSM

What's the point of spending money on body cams shows that only one in a thousand cops is bad? That means there are only 35 bad apples in the entire NYC police dept.

That is my point. If only Tina Trent made the claim, I would have let it slide, since she lives in a fantasy world anyway. But it was the second time in this thread that someone stated that ridiculous assertion as true.
Freder, I suspect that it's more 1 in 1,000. Body cams might help us determine that, either way, which IMO is a good thing. And it's not just about shootings, for me.
I support the police, and I do think they should be supported. Equally, I believe that bad apples should be condemned and weeded out. The police work for us and they are paid with taxpayer dollars. They do their work in our name. With that awesome responsibility comes the need for scrutiny. Scrutiny, not knee-jerk opposition or knee-jerk support. Scrutiny.

Depends. If the police or the district attorney control the release of bodycam footage, they are useless. If an independent agency controls the release, with proper safeguards and rules, appealable to the courts, then they can be very valuable.

Less altruistically, if your complaint intake reduces because mopes know the video doesn't support them, you may save more than the price of the cameras on internal-affairs and general-counsel manhours.
And also there's all the settlement money you never have to pay out.

Having said all that, bodycams are not a panacea. They are usually chest-mounted, so parallax means they don't show exactly what the copper saw. Maybe they could be incorporated into smart safety glasses? They also don't have peripheral vision like the copper does. The audio portion also makes sound-mixing decisions different from what the copper's brain does.
Also the lens shape may distort some distances, which affect use-of-force calculations since distance translates into reaction time, effective weapons range, etc.
So the bodycam footage does not give the finder of fact exactly what the copper experienced. It's good for dismissing completely fabricated complaints - "the complainant at no time in the video turns into a newt" - but for judgment calls about use-of-force, it may not help all the time. CC, JSM

Freder, because the bodycam controversy was something I have analyzed ever since the IACP and other agencies began using them and for a much more specific reason that I cannot disclose. Yes, I was rude towards Althouse and apologize. Her posts about admiring the alleged art on small business' covered windows the last time rioters destroyed privately owned stores still seems to me terribly wrong, as their taxes pay the university salaries, but I had no call to bring it up against her personally. I despise *occupying* and rioting. Thousands of privately owned businesses have been destroyed in the Age of Floyd. And now the fascist leftists are at it again.
