I was in Colorado for the 4th of July weekend, and on the 4th, we took the Cog Railway up to the top of Pike's Peak in the early afternoon. I got to experience something totally new at the summit: The clouds rolled in and were dropping little pellets of snow that looked like little styrofoam balls. I found out that they weren't really "snow" as such, but rather something called "graupel," which is formed when snowflakes fall through supercooled liquid. When raindrops do this, it makes hail, which is more icy. The graupel was softer. Not exactly what you're expecting in the summer time, but I was dressed for the weather in jeans rather than shorts, and I had brought along my "Florida Coat" (also known as a flannel shirt). It was a great weekend. We went to Red Rocks, Garden of the Gods, the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden and the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge where we saw numerous prairie dogs and bison.

The other day I heard that kids are being given tests in the old way. They receive exercise books and handwrite in them their answers to questions in the presence of the teacher and then hand the books in. This is the only way to prevent AI cheating. But there's a problem which is that they can't write because cursive is no longer taught. I never was able to understand how this issue was being coped with.
I see Platner has officially dropped out of the Maine senate race- according to news reports. A whole bunch of different names being suggested for who should replace him. Interestingly, none of them are Janet Mills- who was running against him in the primary.
How about Andrew Gollum? Might be a residency problem, but I'm sure that can be overcome. He's just been arrested for drug possession, but hey, to a Democrat, isn't that a resume enhancer? And think- judicial intervention in recounts almost made him the FL governor. FL dodged a bullet there.
Someone asked the other day something similar to- Does someone have to live in Maine to be elected senator there? The answer is- No, they must have actually been born and grown up in Maine. I lived there in 1994 when George Mitchell unexpectedly announced he was retiring from the senate. It was a bombshell in the Maine political arena. Two Maine congressional districts- one with a Republican, one a Democrat. Both immediately announced they were running for the senate, leaving the two CD slots open. People literally moved back to Maine to announce they were running for congress. Newspapers were running stories about who suddenly moved back into the state. Maine is nothing like NY where Hillary with no ties whatsoever was parachuted into the state to run for and win a senate seat though she had no connections whatsoever to NY. She was a diehard liberal white woman, married to the man who saved abortion, Bill Clinton. All the qualifications needed for NY Democrats. Maine, OTOH, if you weren't born there, you're not going to be elected to any office. Not even dogcatcher. Once you're elected in Maine, to anything, it's pretty much a lifetime sinecure if you want. Change is frowned upon.
I got most of my Maine insights from my immediate subordinate who was a native Mainer. He wasn't much impressed by the average intelligence level of his fellow citizens there.

You don't need to write in cursive. I can't write in cursive. My cursive is unreadable. Just print out letters. Printing letters is way better than cursive. Cursive sucks.
AI doesn't help on written tests. It only helps on writing papers. It's actually pretty easy to test students and see how they're doing without AI. Just take their phones away and test them. Problem solved.

A reminder: One of the myriad of reasons Trump gave for the ceasefire was that, were the war to continue, there would be an economic depression.
So Trump wants to end the war ASAP to avoid economic disruption before midterms, but also is targeting infrastructure in a way that looks almost designed to force Iran to escalate. I am confused. Does the US even have a strategy here?
