This time of year, full dark only lasts about 3 hours. Hardly worth hauling the gear to a dark site and setting up.
Should have had at least one picture of a black powder sunrise, since it's the Fourth.
We had a great day at the lake with friends and shot off low 4 figures worth of cakes, mortars, roman candles, and sparklers for the kids. Painter's blue tape works great for connecting fuses for those fun multiple sequences. I built a rack launcher for the mortars with slightly different trajectories for each of the launch tubes, to better fill the sky. Great fun, and successful retention of all digits and senses.

I did not much care for Freaks. I'm not a horror fan, though. There's definitely a creepy vibe. And then she becomes the monster, because she doesn't want to be creepy. That's a movie that divided people, even back in the day.

Alfred Hitchcock had a lot of nicknames, including Master of the Macabre. Saboteur is one of his greatest works, in my opinion, right up there with North By Northwest and The 39 Steps.
One striking thing about Saboteur is that the man is helped by people with handicaps. First, there's a blind man who helps him, and sees his innocence. And then the innocent man (and the girl) hide on a circus train. And the circus freaks help them out, too.
I guess it's common in horror movies to demonize people. And Hitchcock did that, too. Psycho, for instance. But I think there's a lot of beauty, and high art, in Hitchcock's attempt to make us see innocence, when everybody wants to condemn.
