"He was relieved that everyone was home safe from the hospital, and yet he found he couldn’t connect with his [newborn] children, Olympia and Elisabetta."

"He became full of nervous, negative energy. He had physical symptoms of anxiety: a racing heartbeat, chest pains, burning and electric sensations in his torso and muscles. When the babies smiled and laughed for the first time, he found himself saying out loud: 'What do they have to be happy about?' He didn’t feel he could actively give his family emotional support, so instead he came up with practical solutions, such as creating organised systems and spreadsheets to track his daughters’ feedings and sleep schedules. 'Control was how I approached many things in my life,' he says. 'I had to control their sleep because only when I knew for certain that they were asleep could I settle and relax.'"

He had depression. Okay. He did not have postpartum depression. No matter what the Media wants

Please, God, don't let the gluten-intolerant crowd see this.

Of course, the Media thinks Men can bleed monthly and have babies, so what do I know

Well, part of the father's suffering is hearing or just knowing that he's supposed to be a man about it.

In this story, the woman nearly dies in childbirth. That's presented as part of what made him so depressed. It's obviously also why we onlookers expect him to step up big time for her and the babies.

Which means that she lived. Jesus, that would have overjoyed me! Depressed me??

IVF children means the couple, or at least one of them, really wanted to have children. They were also willing to stay together than seek another spouse that could help them procreate. Then they were successful, a real high for finally succeeding. Then she nearly died while giving birth, an extreme low at any time, but especially compared to the major high going into birth. The next high simply wasn't high enough to recover from the low. Sure, she lived and they exist, but the first was something he always had before they existed. And now, their existence is a constant reminder of what he almost lost to have them. That creates a guilt complex that is hard to break.

By the way, I once worked with Rusty Yates, ex-husband of Andrea. I sat across from him in a meeting years after losing his children. Even then, the depression he was still feeling and wore in his expression and posture; it was a sensation I haven't forgotten. Later, when reading JK Rowling describe "dementors", I could understand the situation she was describing. I'm not saying Rusty is like a dementor (because I suspect many that feel for his wife would believe it), rather he was what was left after having experienced something like it.

I think the trick to recovery, if it is possible, is pointing out how much love is there to create such profound depression.

BREAKING NEWS: Plane lands safely at JFK.

It does get tiresome, but to be news, it has to be about abnormal people or normal people doing abnormal things.

Leland, your explanation makes perfect sense and made me think of all the stories of young children in centuries past whose fathers rejected them, or at the very least, resented them for existing when their mothers ultimately did not. Sounds as if this father is dealing with the same thing, and even though his wife survived, he’s struggling to not reject or resent his daughters for something that was out entirely of their control.

"Is it just me or do we never see any articles about normal people?"

It's not that the articles are about unusual people, it's that the articles are about unusual people that you don't find interesting or inspiring, rather they're about people that one would usually avoid as self-involved, attention-seeking, and generally devoid of any kind of beneficial impact on society. They are the Takers and Breakers, not Makers.

But CJinPA, it's VITAL to our civilization for people to have a deep appreciation of what it took to allow that plane to land safely. Day after day. Otherwise, planes will cease to do that.

Sorry, that Belfast reference was to the woman potter in the Platner post. I'm actually quite sympathetic to the father in this post.

If you cannot feel at one with the universe having a newborn baby or two fall asleep on your chest, you probably shouldn't have undertaken procreation in the first place. But there is that moment, as a friend of mine once quipped, when you get the first child home for the first time and think "what now? My god, what now?" Raising children is not for the faint of heart and will eventually align your belief about your abilities with reality.

Different take: Many men mirror symptoms of the expectant wives. My dad gained 10 pounds with each of my mom's pregnancies, possible because he kept buying donuts for her and he ate them. Ask Labor & Delivery Nurses, men react strangely during and after childbirth. Stress, emotions, fear, helplessness seeing ypur love and baby almost die; that is a recipe for depression and other issues
