"[Elon Musk] is reported to have told one of his children’s mothers he wants to use surrogates to 'reach legion level.'"

"In the meantime, he has goaded the competition. In response to a post about [Russian billionaire Pavel] Durov notching triple-digit offspring, Mr. Musk replied, '"Rookie numbers lmao" — Genghis Khan,' a nod to the Mongol leader’s supposed millions of descendants. What drives these men to reproduce at an industrial scale? Mr. Musk’s reference to Genghis Khan holds one clue.... Like kings of earlier eras who claimed divine lineage, many of these men hold their own bloodlines in exalted regard. Mr. Musk, who in 2021 changed his job title at Tesla to 'technoking,' has said he wants smart people — or even just rich people, according to a report in Business Insider — to have more children. One of the mothers of his offspring, an executive in his business, told his biographer that he encouraged her to have kids and suggested he be her sperm donor...."

From "Is Kidmaxxing the Ultimate Status Symbol for Ultimate Wealth?" (NYT).

"Technoking" is not a gerund. I can't believe I spent time trying to understand "to technok" as a verb. The "ing" goes with the K. It's "Techno King."

You know, "nok" isn't just the NYSE stock ticker for Nokia. It's the genus of the bare-faced bulbul (Nok hualon). The Nok were an ancient African people, known for their terra cotta sculptures.

And never forget the Nixies — Danish: nøkke, Norwegian: nøkk, Swedish: näck; Icelandic: nykur, Faroese: nykur; Finnish: näkki. These were "male water spirits who play enchanted songs on instruments, luring women and children to drown in lakes or streams."

So, ladies, resist the nøkk, the techo-nøkk, the technoking. No kings! No nøkkings. Maintain a no-nøkk policy.

Why? To what end? Enquiring minds want to know.

To what end? Equal rights. There were already enough mermaids, selkies, and female water sprites who led men to their doom. Frank Black and the Nixies demanded equal time.

Just don't turn around and argue that children need a father in the home in a strong relationship with the mother.

Granted that Musk is not putting long term relationships and traditional parenting on display, but: Where is the evidence that Musk is an absentee father, or that the relationships with both kids and the mothers are not strong? I frequently come across photos of him with his kids. How many has he fathered, and with how many different women? It's 14 and 4, respectively, which I didn't know before I checked.

Musk is a one-off human being. I'm glad he's living in my lifetime. However, he also has a one-off ego and hence, wants a world filled with more Elons. Unfortunately, his cosmic mix of genes happens only once.
He is a huge proponent of pumping up the species and one of the few with an audience who regularly talks about the shrinking replacement rate of humans in industrialized nations. So, part of this is him making up for people who have had no, or few children. But part of it is just his ego thinking the world should be filled with more of him and less of you.

Frankly, I'm OK with it. But as Ann pointed out, it's still a one-parent family then and the odds of kids doing well in a one-parent family are not good. Elon grew up with two parents until he was nine, then just with one. But at least he had two during those key formative years.

Anyway, in the scheme of things, it's a blip.

…we’re encouraged to hate Musk but so many of the Ivy grads think they need to reproduce because they’re smart, their partner is smart so out kids will be REALLY smart. You know the way Andre and Stephie will make goat tennis players. Unfortunately all that brain power never took an undergrad course on human intelligence- all those twin studies and stuff. The big part they miss- human intelligence is mean reverting. Smart parents might make kids born on third but they don’t necessarily inherit mom and dad’s big brain genes…

Yes. It also potentially fractures siblinghood, among other implications.

Again, yes! And then also, what about the offspring that FAIL to turn out to have exceptional intelligence or other exceptional abilities? Are they second-tier offspring, then? I mean, the potential dynamics are a little concerning, though I will concede that at the end of the day, it's really not my business on a personal level.

Since reversion is mean, Elon wants to take as many shots as he can get. At least that's my interpretation.
More important:
Nixie tubes were invented by David Hagelbarger.[5][6] The early Nixie displays were made by a small vacuum tube manufacturer called Haydu Brothers Laboratories, and were introduced in 1955[7] by Burroughs Corporation, which purchased Haydu. The name Nixie was derived by Burroughs from "NIX I", an abbreviation of "Numeric Indicator eXperimental No. 1",[8] although this may have been a backronym designed to justify the evocation of the mythical creature with this name.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_tube

Backronym. There's a word I learned just now.

…which isn’t to suggest genes aren’t important. People like to argue the anecdotes but as I recall the piles of studies (many of them seeking a different outcome) score it 60/40, nature over nurture…

"Just don't turn around and argue that children need a father in the home in a strong relationship with the mother."

Indeed. What Musk is doing is a minor step better than the other men (rich or otherwise) that pay for sex and then refuse to acknowledge any other outcomes from the event. Ethical? Well better, but it is still a form of prostitution that is only slightly better for the child than the normal outcomes.

I don't blame him for his instincts and willingness to "do better" than men, who give into the instinct to procreate with as many women as possible yet don't understand (or pretend no to have understood) the action they were doing. I can applaud him for that, but it is about the same amount of applause to offer some guy, who at least got consent for sex even if he never intended to stay with the woman beyond the romp. Congrats on not being legally a rapist.

There are a lot of women who throw themselves at NBA stars in the hopes of getting pregnant and getting a check in the mail. Elon is getting free publicity for his one-man sex shop. Prostitution is technically the name for this. You're like a sex worker with a really good benefits plan and almost zero hours in the office. Feminists who take this career path can also complain about men non-stop, so it's a twofer.

But their lineage will only contain 50% of their DNA, the rest will be of women with dubious DNA.

Musk, with all of his tech knowledge should set up a factory to make clones of himself. Ramp up production enough and he could be president in 18 years.

I suspect it's the opposite. There are a huge number of Ivy grads who think reproduction is a dangerous trap and they need to avoid it for as long as possible.

The anti-natalist indoctrination in our society is huge. We ought to show the kids this movie in sex education class.

Instead, we have kids putting condoms on bananas.

You could almost remake 2001, with all the chimps putting condoms on bananas. Until Elon shows up, the chimp with a different idea. And then you've got a big baby in outer space.

I'd be more worried about the Chinese. Apparently Todd Blance read my post here yesterday about ENFORCE THE DAMN LAW against birth tourism. He sent the batsignal out to all DOJ offices that this now how highest priority. I don't know why it was not before but better late than never.

The focus has been on female birth tourism. What about male birth tourism?

XuBo Chinses billionaire and founder of a large gaming company has supposedly had 100 children by surrogacy. 12 born in the US.

If the mothers are US citizens, the children are too. Currently under 14A but also under any potential change in that.

Hypothetical: Chinese billionaire, funded by Chinese govt, flies to Bahamas. Or Canada or anywhere convenient. Even the US perhaps.

He has contracted with 100 women to have babies for him. Pays them a million each with stipulation he gets custody. They meet up, he impregnates them, they come back to US and have the baby. As he has custody, the baby is shipped off to China where it is raised and indoctrinated by govt.

I think this would be a horrible thing. For the kids and potentially for the US.

I don't see a thing that can be done about it no matter what happens to birthright citizenship and female birth tourism.

r-selection, rather than K-selection: focus on quantity over quality. If one assumes that even a child you've invested much time and money in can end up hating you and rejecting everything you stand for, it does make sense to go for quantity over quality.

If the future belongs to those who show up, there is something to be said for large families. Theodore Roosevelt thought so and wanted WASP families to bear more children. It didn't stick.
