"California hits the brakes on the drive-thru boom/The American institution faces bans designed to stop people eating in their cars so much."

A headline in The London Times.
“Hopefully this will help encourage people to just, you know, socialise more, too, because drive-thrus, you’re just like waiting,” Commissioner Beverly Shotwell told The San Francisco Chronicle. “There’s not a lot of human interaction.”

That's what we need, more lines snaking around indoors. People will get to know each other. We'll chit chat and flourish.

Or everyone will order and pay on their iPhone then park and some person or robot comes out and hands them a bag and they drive off.

From the article: "[T]he days of dining on the go may be numbered as cities up and down the Golden State are moving to outlaw new drive-thrus. Napa is considering a sweeping ban that aims to rid it of its reliance on cars. The ban is still in its early stages despite initial proposals dating back to 2021, when the city council denied a drive-thru at a proposed local shopping centre. It is part of the city’s wider, continuing overhaul of its zoning codes...Commissioner Eryn Ebach said there would be carve-outs for businesses like pharmacies and existing drive-thru restaurants. In southern California, Culver City voted last week to temporarily ban new drive-thrus while considering a permanent citywide ban. The standalone city within Los Angeles County extended a 45-day moratorium on any new drive-thrus for another 10.5 months, prompted by mounting public concerns over a proposed In-N-Out Burger...."

Enigma ने कहा…

Sonic has old-style drive ins, order from and then eat in your car. It's too bad that their food isn't very good. Culvers has a multi-lane "parking lot" for deliveries to cars, but you aren't meant to stay there.

San Francisco? It's often so dense that drive thrus don't make sense. Even the lower density south and west sides are tight.

It'd be interesting to have an SF restaurant that forced people to drive up an excessively steep hill, and then down the other side. They could name it the Disney Woke Village and charge admission too. Instead of Pirates of the Caribbean, the "ride" sights would be the Golden Gate Bridge, gays in action, the Bay Bridge, junkies in action, Alcratraz, transgendered folks in action, Coit Tower, homeless tents, Chinatown, and poop on the ground.

Stupid is as stupid does.....

A city bitching and moaning about an IN n Out drive thru is gonna get wrecked. They can either put the drive thru in their city and reap the benefits, or they can refuse. In which case In n Out will go down the street to the neighboring city and they will lose any tax benefits and still have to deal with the long lines.

And this BS about "socializing" as the impetus is such garbage. I'm sure they don't like cars, and carbon footprints, and all the rest of the lefty talking points, but they can't say those things, so they have to lie and say its about "socializing".

None of them (including the most vocal critics) will be going inside to socialize. They'll be ordering on their phone and having uber eats deliver to them. Or they'll have their assistant (paid for by the city of course) doing the coffee run or the lunch run.

...and they'll send the assistant to the next town over for the In n Out burgers (of course).

In some areas, whole sections of road were removed from drivers - and made into bike lanes. NO ONE uses these new bike lanes. No one. And traffic is now extra congested in those areas.

Thanks nanny staters! good job. How much of our tax dollars were used to pay this women?? (who is now gone)
B-town has wonderful bike paths - and they DO get used.
The new street bike lanes? nothing. no one. It's a joke.

In-N-Out Burger was famous for only being a drive thru burger joint when they first started in 1948 and they didn't open their first dine in location until 1979. To this day, they always have long lines of cars at their locations. (Except at the Placentia location because the city didn't allow drive thrus when it was built.)

As a general rule, people don't interact at fast food places. That's one of the reasons it's called, fast food. I was at a McDonalds once and a woman near me was staring at me. Finally, she blurted out, "Are you married?" Look at the time, gotta go....

One thing that I have noticed is how massive the "door dash" type industry has become in my area. Every fast food restaurant now has a space at the counter specifically for door dash pickups and the fast food restaurants are, pretty much, devoid of sitting customers. (All the Pizza Huts here actually got rid of their customer seating and do pickups only.)

Personally I don't do Door Dash stuff. My roommates do it all the time, but the food isn't as hot and fresh and they almost always forget to include something or just get the order wrong.

If we see the line at either is around the building, we use the app to place the order in the parking lot, then walk in to the counter. It's faster. The really notable street-blocking outfit around here is Chic-fil-a at lunchtime, and some smaller chains.

It has been so long--decades even--since I've had a fast-food burger. You couldn't pay me to eat a Mickey D's and not just because I saw a grillman pick a patty off the floor where he dropped it and slip it back on the grill . . . in about 1970.

We did eat Mickey, Wendy, and BK when the kid was a kid, of course.

In-N-Out is frozen in time by design. While they have top-tier quality and sanitation, the recipes are straight out of 1948 with old-time standards. This means smaller portions and simpler flavor profiles. This means soft white bread. This means the "Animal Style" of grilled onions plus a condiment blend. Their vegetable oil fries are bland vs. the beef tallow fries of other vendors.

Just got back from a run to 5 guys. My partner’s favorite quasi fast service burger place. Thought that we were ordering a naked triple burger, with grilled onion and toadstools. Turns out that I was charged for three double burgers. Got that fixed, but then got a triple in a bun, with lettuce, tomatoes, and maybe more nix to the bun, lettuce, etc, because the earlier remake was by the manager, who get involved because it required a refund, and he missed the directions for no bun, etc. it may seem like a lot, but she’ll eat it over 2-3 nights. This is what happens when she insists on doing her own ordering.

She recently swore off In-and-out. Picked two up two nights ago for me. The fries are really better at 5 Guys. I also do burgers at Wendy’s, when she is getting backed potatoes and chilis.

I keep reming her that she never has had a Big Mac. In 69 years, no Big Mac. Unbelievable. Realistically, I wouldn’t let her eat one, since their Secret Sauce contains mayonnaise, which she is allergic to.
