"... can bring to mind the heroic architecture of Louis Kahn or a Noguchi sculpture. When sunlight after a rain turns the gray stone pink, the building can look like a beacon. But from other angles, it’s cold and forbidding. That’s a jarring vibe for a project whose most groundbreaking ambition is to reimagine the presidential library as a warm, welcoming community hub.... From the street the carved granite words from Selma are illegible, the lettering bunched together like Cheerios in a box. Standing just below it in Jackson Park, the tower looms like a castle keep, its mass and height in tension with the park’s pastoral beauty and origins...."
Writes the NYT architecture critic Michael Kimmelman, in "Obama Center’s Two Sides: A Lovely Park and a Forbidding Tower/In Chicago, the $850 million Obama Presidential Center aims to remake a neighborhood with a 19.3-acre community hub and a brooding 225-foot museum." (NYT).

Why does that one 'thing' painting? sculpture, look like pulled teeth.
Equal opportunity plaudits and criticism marks a milestone in our national cultural development and forward-looking community viability.
The obama center for kids who cant read good
"The center’s mixed messaging is incarnated in the Janus-faced facade of the tower whose eccentric cuts and grooves from some angles can bring to mind the heroic architecture of Louis Kahn or a Noguchi sculpture.”
I guess as an architecture critic for the NYT he had to find something nice to say about this eyesore, and a little name-dropping “from some angles” was the best he could do.
"in tension"
BS. Like with the new "Darth Vader" museum in Golden Gate park, the phrase you're looking for is "deliberately insulting to its surroundings".
The Obama Center is the visual definition of Stalinist Brutalism.
It's another democratic money-suck.
Janus, huh? So many hidden meanings. Two-faced, cold as stone, and the very name contains an *sshole.
Well he had nothing to do with selma
I would havr thought cerberus three headec dog
It should read: “You Can Keep Your Doctor”.
It doesn't take an architecture critic to know ugly when one sees it. As for the pastoral beauty of Jackson Park, you can kiss that goodbye. It's all about Barack. Him will always be present.
…or, “Hands Up, Don’t Poot”
Why Chicago and not Hawaii though?
She wasn't the prez, he was.
She was Chicago, never to retu4n...
He was always Hawaii, through and through...
You peopl3 fell for it: he had black skin and thus was South Side. Neverminf the banker grandma and wwII vet who raised hi, nttawwt, while his mom was off globetrotting with international lovers. He was raised wealthy white, private schools, nttawwt. If he were from Chicagoland, he'd be more Kennilworth than South Side.... butnyall voted for the myth, the likable, too cool for school, know it all with dark skin...
He's still trying to sell that shit and give us advice, even though when they got in, the Obamas were kinds clueless... and hostile to working class whites as they rubbed elbows with the monied elites in DC.
Michelle's not happy. Ain't no Chicago girl envying her trapped life... Barack's just a lightweight doing what they tell him. He's not leader, no fighter either.... Biden should have taken his arrogance down a peg and pushed back when Barry called him VP when Biden has nabbed the top slot himself, with all that So Carolina backroom help when the US all decided to drop out and let Joe win because th blacks in So Carilina had their demands of Dems too.
We're a DEI, not a competitive or even competent nation anymore. People want the paychecks and the status, but like with the lae school profs, they hate the work and really all want to be doing something else... like blogging or hiking or gardening or raising animals. The work for pay though? It's not a calling or a passion, just a way to get your needs met.
I do not know what is "heroic" about buildings that look like boxes stacked on each other.
Eric Trump released what looked like some A.I.-assisted slop in March.
"AI slop". Was it actually poorly produced or is this more of denigrating everything AI? Or is it slop because "Trump bad"?
It needs more gold accents.
I think data republican showed the grift pyramid this stands on
Money donated to build Obama library sent on to Tides group https://share.google/bVBjDGyaW9YNvV1Ey
Surprised there is no "Cheerios" tag.
Obama Library Cliff Notes:
1. The Exterior sucks
2. Featured artwork in and around is surprisingly good
3. The exterior sucks
When you lose the NYT....
"From the street the carved granite words from Selma are illegible...."
Shameful.
It would have been much better if they made it out of concrete with the facing showing the grain of the plywood forms. Brutalist light is lame
Shouldn't it have been Alpha-Bits instead of Cheerios?

from the street the carved granite words from Selma are illegible, the lettering bunched together like Cheerios in a box.
Tower of Babel
"The Obama Center aspires to remake a historically poor, Black neighborhood across 19.3 acres of storied Jackson Park."
Color me dubious. That's at the end of the Midway at the southern edge of Hyde Park (a very very not poor area of town) right next to the Museum of Science and Industry (tourist central) and the University of Chicago neighborhood. Granted it is around 60th street, which is near the south edge of "the good neighborhood", but I used to live on 61st street in student housing and I think the "safe" parts of town have actually expanded a little since then. It's also in Jackson Park, all of which was generally considered safe, as I recall it. So I'm not sure I'm buying the urban renewal aspects. 63d Street could be pretty dodgy though, so maybe there's some kernel of truth there.
I wonder how many illegal aliens and homeless druggies will get to live in there.
Leftists with unlimited budgets always reveal their souls: Man in the High Castle, Soviet, Brutalism, and most importantly, Designed by a Committee of the Faithful.
When even the lefty left left left NYT uses language like "brooding", "looms like a castle keep", "forbidding", and "Cheerios in a box", the vomit-o-rama cannot be denied.
Nomination for a permanent nickname: "The crushed Costco giant-sized Cherrio's box." First-time tourists will mentally pair it with The Bean as examples of Chicago's kitchen kitch public art.
Over under on the number of registered voters who live there and have ballots mailed: 54000.
Eye of Sauron topper woulda been perfection
Indeed. When I see it I get sort of a mishmash of vibes between Barad-Dur, the Ministry of Love from 1984, the worst commie-block architecture from the Soviet Union and East Germany, and a toppled Imperial AT-AT walker.
"Tower of Babel" is a specific example of what this really is: a Mesopotamian Ziggurat, a "sacred temple to honor a city's patron," according to people who study pre-Islamic Middle Eastern civilizations. All except the basketball court. The ancients didn't do hoops.
@Ficta right next to the Museum of Science and Industry (tourist central) and the University of Chicago neighborhood.
How do you gentrify an area and push out the unwanted without calling it gentrification?
"Eye of Sauron topper" - LOLOL. totally.
Obama’s greatest achievement was repackaging himself as a foot soldier in the Black Struggle.
Also alliance headquarters in firefly
The last sentence in that Obama quote, up the side of the Library says; "Oh, what a glorious task we are given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours." That line is good enough to imagine it coming from the lips of any of our previous presidents.
Until you compare it to the core tenet of "Social Justice". Quoting from ai "Social Justice two sides of the same coin": "Privilege and Oppression: Like two sides of a coin, systemic advantages and systemic disadvantages exist in tandem. Addressing social justice means dismantling the structural barriers that oppress some while confronting the systemic privileges that benefit others.
"Dismantling" and "confronting" does not immediately spring to mind "continually trying to improve". Improving; I would generally submit to mean, we have something good to start with.
I avoided using "great", not because "great" the word is not great, but because I believe "great" can always be improved. (leaving people alone helps) That's the greatness of America. The greatness that gives me goosebumps.
Janus faced aptly describes the Obama secret power.
Has "Janus-faced" ever been used as a compliment? I think the architecture reflects the ambivalence and disinterest of its namesake.
Soviet ugly. So it fits in Chicago
“The aesthetic of "ugly" or sterile buildings is primarily attributed to Soviet-style Brutalism and Bauhaus-inspired modernism, rather than a unique American communist tradition. In the US, this architectural style was adopted by liberal academic institutions and the liberal left in the 1920s–1950s, who embraced socialist ideals and rejected "bourgeois" ornamentation in favor of functional, egalitarian design.”
Fundamentally transforms that no bill of rights famine and genocide
the lettering bunched together like Cheerios in a box
Bad metaphor. "Like sardines in a can" would have been better if it weren't already a cliche. "Like Alpha Bits" the letter shaped cereal might also have been better. The letters reminded me more of alphabet soup, or rather the little pasta letters that used to be used in school projects.
Alternate reality NYT headline: "Remarkably ugly and depressing structure tarnishes Obama's legacy: It's not just hideous, everyone hates it and he also trampled community interests to get it built"
I, for one, not only admire the audacity of hope, which is a promise of a possibility rather than the accomplishment of anything real, but I also thrill to the "C'mon, man!" dementia addled sensibility of Obama's grifter of a Democratic Party successor, Joe and his enabling non-physician Doctor Jill.
Ask AI about plans for the Biden Presidential Library and the second sentence reads: "The project is in its early stages as the team seeks to secure the necessary funding." To read that is to confirm that the grifter has lost his ability to produce largesse for tribute.
I went to HS 3 blocks away, all boys Catholic school. Michelle Obama’s brother also went there. I tell ya, those Robinsons really had it rough. Always oppressed. They’ve destroyed beautiful Jackson Park, thanks to gutless judges, and after the initial glow wears off, the only people going there will be school kids dragooned into a field trip. We’re ack to forced bussing.
Back to forced bussing.
the German National Socialists built a bunch of towers like this during WW part 2 as air raid shelters. Great ugly things almost impossible to demolish. They called them Flaktowers.
You can see some here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flak_tower
FLAK was antiaircraft fire. A Flack is a politician's mouthpiece who is hired to put a positive spin on something dreadful.
We should start calling Obama's tower a "Flack Tower". We could even call it "Obama's national socialist Flack Tower"

I did not like the first try and asked Grok to show people fleing in fear. Nope, Grok told me.
So I asked Grok to show peple fleeing
Nope.
I asked to show people running away and got this.

It's bad enough that you have to wonder if a dynamic arose during the design process where many people could tell it was bad, but since no one else was pointing that out, everyone kept quiet.
Narciso,
I keep pushing the boundaries over there and keep wondering when I am going to get kicked off. But I loudly and frequently present myself as a POC (person of color) and whenever someone criticizes me say that they are racist. While denying that, because I am POC, I can possibly be racist. Only white folk can be racist. Doesn't matter that my skin is whiter than Casper's ghost, as a Puerto Rican I am officially "brown"
I also point out in my profile that I am NOT republican, that all my presidential votes have been for McGovern.
Come on over, it is fun to screw around over there. I'm @Jimmy3jay there We can follow each other and get into flaming fake arguments.

It's called "The Abilene Paradox"
"I can't believe we went to Abilene when nobody wanted to go to Abilene."
I learned it back in grad school in the 70s. This video looks like it may be a copy of a copy of a copy of that original tape. Still worth watching.

" the tower looms like a castle keep, its mass and height in tension with the park’s pastoral beauty and origins...."
"in tension" what a weird word choice. Why not "Clashes"? Too strong? And why throw in "origins"?
Kimmelman can't write - but then he is a NYT's critic. Is English his second language?
"can bring to mind the heroic architecture of Louis Kahn or a Noguchi sculpture. When sunlight after a rain turns the gray stone pink, the building can look like a beacon."
I dunno what is "heroic about Kahn Sculpture". he's just grasping to say something good about the Stalinist concrete bunker that obama put up. And I'd say a lot of Kahn architecture, whatever its merits when viewed from the INSIDE, are remarkably ugly.
In tension = in contrast?
People mock Trump's taste, but he would never pay for a "Heroic Louis Kahn building" or approve something as ugly as the Obama's library.
It looks very communist
They abuse the language like ike turner
More cowbell.
This is one building that will been visually improved by being covered with graffiti.
"the tower looms like a castle keep": Mr. Kimmelman understands the message of the building.
a little name-dropping “from some angles”
It has a great personality! And, if the light's juuuust right...
