Flopping Aces
@FloppingAces

Ro Khanna strutted into this fight swinging a fucking flamethrower and somehow lit his own goddamn pants on fire. That’s the entire story in one sentence.

He thought he was dropping the perfect progressive nuke ... scream that Elon Musk was “possibly sentencing millions of children to death,” wave around USAID like it was sacred, drop the word “accountability” with that fake solemn preacher face, and let the media lapdogs bark on command.

The second he opened his mouth about accountability, the boomerang came back and cracked him right in the teeth.

Now we’re not just talking about Musk anymore. We’re talking about the entire rotten foreign-aid grift machine that nobody was ever supposed to touch.

We’re talking about the NGOs, the consultants, the DEI grifters, the gender ideology pet projects, the influence pipelines, the taxpayer-funded bullshit that suddenly turned into “dead children” the exact moment DOGE asked for basic fucking receipts.

And then there’s Ro himself.

The luxury-left hypocrite. The redistribution preacher who lives fat and happy off other people’s money while lecturing everyone else about fairness. The guy who wants to tax billionaires into the ground ... right up until the audit starts at his own front door. The moral scold who somehow never gets around to applying his own rules to his $232 million household fortune and 38,000-plus stock trades.

That’s why this exploded in his face.

He tried to paint Elon as the villain. Instead he handed the whole country a flashlight and pointed it straight at the basement where all the USAID corruption, waste, and ideological garbage was hiding. Now everyone’s asking the questions he never wanted answered: What the fuck was that money actually buying? Who was getting rich off it? Why did basic oversight cause such panic?

From Neo, worth repeating:

"New York City Democratic Socialists of America co-chair Gustavo Gordillo, about methods and goals:

“We’re using the Democratic Party as a ballot-access vehicle, not because we share its goals,” Gordillo boldly stated. “We build our own organization, get elected under the Democratic label, caucus with Democrats when it’s useful, and push our own agenda from the inside.”

“We see the Democratic establishment as an obstacle, not a home.”

One mistake people often make is to take far too much away from primary elections. There is no question these elections say a lot about NYC but NYC is one of the most progressive places in America and has extremely different politics than most places. That doesn’t mean these types of candidates are all the sudden going to be viable general election candidates in parts of the country that are purple or are not as deep blue. Mamdani might have been a kingmaker in deep blue NY but he wouldn’t be a viable candidate in most races in America.

Perhaps the Democratic establishment understands that the election will not be won in NY state & NYC districts that always vote blue. It will be won with swing voters in swing states. Who won't be voting for your favorite socialist.

Larry Krasner was put into place by George Soros in 2017. For the past 9 years he's been sowing chaos, and he's had company in other US cities with similar comrades. He got smacked down, finally, last week by senior judges. It took 9 years. Would anybody care to make an accounting of how much anti-justice confusion and damage has been created by this one person?

There are more than 250 Democratic Socialists presently holding elected office in the US, and 90% of them have been elected in the past 6 years. I am certain the impact of their accomplishments will begin to unfold with time.

Anybody that tells you this is no big deal, that these are all local offices, or that such candidates being seated in primaries is of little importance, you are all over-reacting - those people are complete morons - until they can give you a fair accounting of the damage that these DAs have wreaked over the past few years. The methodology is very similar. Somebody has to correct that damage, and while that's happening, the murderers that were released are unreformed and unpunished. And while that damage control is being effected, their primary responsibilities will be distracted.

These are people that are focused on the destruction of the country and its political system - from within. They've been empowered and they've been making progress.

Iran Strikes Ship in Strait of Hormuz, Undermining Efforts to Restore Traffic ~ NYT

Amazing if you think that all of this did not exist few months ago.

Hardliners in both political parties want to personalize the failure to the inadequate Donald Trump, but the failure is much more general to overall American policy towards the Middle East going back decades. In that sense, Trump is irrelevant.

The Republican party has had an utterly failed vision towards the Middle East since 9/11. The true authors of the current failure are Dick Cheney and George W. Bush and the entire neoconservative chorus that have cheered on failed wars, "regime change," and "total victory" for decades.

The Democrats, their Washington establishment riddled with neoconservative interventionists and taking slavish direction from unquestioning "blank check" pro-Israel ethno-nationalists, have long believed that there has been a "constructive role" for the US to play in the Middle East. They learned this false lesson in the seminar rooms of their elite universities. Their plutocratically supported think tanks endlessly chant it.

The American Empire in the Middle East is a bipartisan construction. The Empire is in retreat. What the Democratic Left has learned and the Republican American Firsters are rediscovering is that the American Empire must be ended. Just as the Americans left Iraq and Afghanistan, America must completely withdraw from the Middle East.

There can be no renewal of America if America stays with Empire in the Middle East. The trillions wasted on futile wars are an opportunity cost that threatens the very essence of America's future. Washington has put the interests of the American people in third or fourth place for decades. The elections are showing that voters are starting to put their interests on top and not fall for the elite propaganda propagated by the oligarchic controlled media-entertainment complex.

Tonight's TCM
"Ariel"
1988

Who is the most famous movie director from Finland? Anyone? Class? Bueller?

You might have to Google it, but once you realize who it is and what he's made over his prolific career, you might not be too surprised.

Aki Kaurismäki might not be too well known, but he had a brief run of notoriety in the 1990s with a series of films about a rock and roll band called the Leningrad Cowboys. He's a prolific and respected filmmaker. He and his brother Mika have been responsible for 20% of the film output of Finland since the 1980s.

Ariel is his 6th feature film, released in 1988. Despite seeing Leningrad Cowboys Go America in college, I had never heard of this film until it popped up on the TCM app.

The story takes a brief 75 minutes from start to finish and tells the tale of a Nick-Cave-like miner named Taisto whose mine has just been closed. At a local pub, his father slides him car keys and tells him to leave town, that if he stays he will drink himself to death and won't amount to anything. The father then pulls out a pistol, retreats into the bathroom and kills himself. The car is a vintage 1960s Cadillac convertible with a roof that doesn't work in the middle of the brutal Finnish winter.

This doesn't sound like a comedy but it's quite hilarious. Kaurismaki's style is deadpan, with little dialogue and great visual gags that Hollywood has seem to lost the art of making in their own films. Taisto heads to Helskini? and gets robbed, gets some work, falls in love, becomes a surrogate dad, gets arrested, gets sent to jail and sets out to break out and flee the country. All of this happens without a lot of fanfare but a lot of heart and guile. Even amidst the banal urban poverty of 1980s Finland, there is a strong undercurrent of hope throughout. The performances are all top notch without the overwrought drama some might expect from a story that smoothly glides from bleak road movie, to unexpected romance to jail break to underworld crime drama.

The short run time insures that not a single moment feels wasted. Composition, music, lighting and style all comes together to add to this charming film.

The Caddy's stubborn roof ends up providing a hell of a callback at the end.

narciso- and others,

Doctors don't know a lot of things. Started taking small doses of methylene blue. For reasons other then dermatology. A big (over 1" diameter) raised above other skin level brown spot on my forehead, been there for years, became a gray spot within a month. Well, looked gray. On closer examination, it was blue. Started taking it March 2025. Over time, it's been shrinking down, and turning into normal colored skin. And the more I walk in the sun- the paler it gets. It really got paler on my last visit to FL for a few weeks. Going back early AUG for a few weeks. I also apply a methylene blue skin cream to the that spot on a regular basis, and sometimes a more concentrated liquid form. Which when followed by a walk in the sun leads to faster fading.

My (new) dermatologist has no idea what to make of it, and had never heard of methylene blue. And was further confused because when they do the body scan with their laser- skin cancer shows up blue. And the spot on my forehead she said "Looks very angry!"

I have applied the liquid methylene blue to other spots on my skin. Two types of reactions. Nothing at all. Or, the spot absorbs some of it, with a blue tint, and if I keep applying it, disappears after a while. The stuff knows what it doing, I don't.

I've been applying the skin cream to the back or hands. Had rough skin with a few "age spots". Smooth skin now, no age spots.

Make of it what you will. I'm a study of one, AKA as anecdotal evidence. But my wife now uses the skin cream on a regular basis. She was skeptical, and now isn't.

Most doctors don't see the benefit of Vitamin D- my current practitioner does. And if you take a good Vitamin K supplement, Vitamin D intoxication, a real thing, becomes far less likely to occur. She also doesn't pressure me into statins. Family history of diabetes, my A1C is in the pre-diabetic range, and has been stable for years with metformin and diet. Statins increase the rate of diabetes. Which is more dangerous to me? High cholesterol or diabetes? My judgement- the latter. She may or may not agree, but she sees my point. Trade-offs. It's part of life.

"What Trump really wanted to relate was a conversation he had had with a historian whose verdict was that Trump was “without question, the most powerful man the planet [had] ever known — by a long way.” The historian had sent Trump a two-page memo from which he read. “If President Trump is the American Eagle, then William the Conqueror was merely a sparrow.” Curious about the identity of the historian, Jonathan Swan tracked down a golf caddie in Florida, who confessed a passion for history."

Sports business analyst Darren Rovell explained it directly: Clark (via her Nike endorsement deal) only permits certain non-Nike licensees like WinCraft/Fanatics to use her name and number, not her likeness/image. WinCraft therefore couldn't legally include her photo or illustration on the poster without specific permission or a broader rights deal, which apparently wasn't in place. https://x.com/darrenrovell/status/2070261323183649190

This is consistent with other merchandise issues—Clark has been absent from some official team calendars and similar items for the same licensing reasons. Nike can use her full likeness in their own products, but third-party licensees for league merchandise often face tighter restrictions from top athletes protecting their image. https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/leaving-caitlin-clark-off-30th-100701666.html

But Philadelphia's black voters may pull the same lever, but they don't like the guy or most of his policies. Hence this funny scene the other day:

District Attorney Larry Krasner said Monday that, in the more than two years since Mayor Cherelle L. Parker was sworn in, he has only met with her three times.

And despite his visit to her City Hall office on Monday in what Krasner described as “the spirit of hopeful collaboration,” that number did not grow to four.

The district attorney, along with a phalanx of staff and television cameras, walked across the street from his downtown office to the mayor’s suite on the second floor of City Hall, armed with a letter lamenting his budget as inadequate. In it, Krasner wrote that he needs an additional $5.6 million from the city to bolster shootings investigations, domestic violence prosecutions, and victim services.

Asked why he was delivering a letter to Parker in person, Krasner said: “There is nothing new and nothing inappropriate about civil rights leaders, activists, and politicians getting the word out.”

The mayor did not open her door. Krasner pushed his letter through a mail slot.

Yes, the WNBA has the rights to use players' Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) for league-related purposes, but this right is strictly limited to league-branded promotions, official merchandise, and team marketing. When a player signs a standard WNBA contract, they grant the league and their specific team the right to use their identity to sell jointly.

The Rule: The WNBA can use a player's image or likeness on jerseys, video games, trading cards, and television broadcasts. The Catch: This right usually requires the addition of team trademarks or logos. For example, the league can sell an official Indiana Fever jersey featuring Caitlin Clark, but they cannot sell a standalone "Caitlin Clark" fashion line without her separate permission.

This is bullshit. Check out the WNBA store or the Fever's. Lots of CC merch using her likeness. Including Fanatics.

Shocked not shocked! The valid question is: are they raising money with bonds to invest in projects, or to pay the CEO and give money back to early investors?

The thing was priced not much above inflation. The risk is almost being competely ignored. Also consider rates are likely going up, so buying now will result in a principal loss while rates remain elevated.

Bond Traders Stunned as Losses on SpaceX’s New Debt Keep Growing ~ Bloomberg

"SpaceX’s blockbuster bond sale is weakening so quickly in the secondary market that traders say they can’t recall another recent deal that widened this sharply."

The elephant in the room is not taking into account the trillions of investment already committed to AI isn't a one time event. This has to be repeated every 3 to 5 years. None of these companies are making money even at the gross level. It's just not possible to generate that level of revenue (trillions) in a time frame investors are willing to wait.

The AI industry is also assuming this demand will grow forever almost vertically. It just isn't going to happen. AI will become a commodity business. It's already headed in that direction before it even meaningfully got off the ground.

The Baa1 rating from Moody's is embarrassing.

Space X is mainly space junk, not surprising that their bonds are gravitating to Junk. They may burn up on entry in to the junk zone. They may burn up on entry in to the junk zone.

The most ludicrous thing is that the valuation was mostly based on xAI. They don't even have a real frontier model. Anthropic, Open AI, Google and now open source Chinese models all post superior benchmarks. What is the actual value proposition?

Who on earth would buy a 30 year bond from Space X yielding only 1% more than Treasuries? Higher yields than bonds with comparable ratings suggests investors have reservations about the credit rating itself.

That anyone is willing to take this level of risk for not much above money market rates shows how truly bonkers the markets are. You can get 4% in a money market if you shop around. Taking this for 6% is just foolish.
