From the Internet: When a crane or heron (which are often mistaken for cranes) catches a fish, it typically swallows it whole, headfirst. Here is what happens next: Instant Suffocation: Because fish need oxygen from water, they cannot breathe in the predator's gullet or stomach. Hyper-Corrosive Acids: Bird stomachs are significantly more acidic than human or mammalian stomachs. These acids, along with digestive enzymes, rapidly break down the fish's tissues and scales. The Gizzard: After passing through the acidic chemical stomach, the fish reaches a muscular second chamber called the gizzard. This compartment mechanically grinds down the remains, ensuring the fish is thoroughly digested. Because of this intense digestive environment, a swallowed fish stops squirming and dies very quickly

Savagery.

The heron's airway is a completely separate tube, behind the spine.

"...necessary sacrifice to achieve renewal". Something, or someone has to die so that something else, or someone else may live. We are (big tech) trying to get around that, I doubt we will succeed.

Linking to my own previous comment. Trump might call that "too cute".

Extraordinary video, Meade. Patience rewarded.

It was touch and go for a while whether he was going to swallow it or drop it.

It was like a variation of fly and spear fishing, except the flies were just there.

That's a great blue heron, an adult at least in its third year. You can tell by the beak, which changes gradually from slate gray to yellow. Herons, egrets, and bitterns all belong to the taxonomic Family Ardeidae of the Order Pelecamiformes, the pelicans, obviously. The difference is the supraorbital glands that true pelicans have, and the Ardeidae do not. Consequently, herons, egrets, and bitterns must make their living from fresh water. Cranes belong to the Order Gruiformes, which makes the heron/crane resemblance a case of convergent evolution. Gruiformes is a bit of a wastebasket taxon; some current members probably have a different phylogeny from the others. Clean-up research is ongoing.

How to tell a crane from a heron -- watch it in flight. Herons draw their heads back toward the torso using that dinosaur diagnostic, the S-curved neck. Pelecans do this, too. Cranes fly with their necks stretched out like swans and geese. Why? The pelican clade have heavy heads, reinforced against the struggles of captured prey (not always fish, great blues eat a lot of rodents as well). To fly, a bird's center of gravity must align with the longitudinal axis of the wings. Pulling the head back achieves this weight distribution for the herons and pelicans. However, that head back posture isn't as aerodynamically clean as the stretched neck posture of the cranes, which are known for their epic migratory flights. The differences in in-flight postures are probably connected to the differing migratory behaviors.

Well.... he didn't think so, or he would have stepped away from the water to juggle it. He was just doing it to titillate the audience.

Just don't venture too close, Tiny Meade.

Cool video! Thanks for sharing.

I wonder if the shaking of the fish before attempting to swallow is designed to stun it enough that it doesn't swim away if dropped.
