"It was not clear how the flag got loose."

That's the third sentence in a NYT article titled, "Huge American Flag Flies Into Power Lines, Knocking Out Power for Thousands/The flag hit transmission lines on Saturday night, affecting 5,000 customers in Connecticut."

The power company called the flag "massive" — 40' x 76'.

The article doesn't have comments, so readers were deprived of the opportunity to spin metaphors. If it had, I'm sure Trump would have been mentioned prominently.

Trump may/may not be responsible for the flag itself, but he sure as hell made it come loose.

It was trying to escape Connecticut…

Trump personally loosened the flag to cause a power outage in Connecticut. Just ask any Democrat.

Why are Democrats upset?

They were probably dancing underneath the flag celebrating with their foreign invader allies while it burned. They love burning flags.

Coming soon to CT: A ban on large flags (preferably American flags) as a danger to power transmission lines that deliver expensive Green energy to the rich liberals of CT.

Important detail "Near Interstate 95) -- like right next to it. Maybe a very different story if it had blown onto the highway.

Funny. My first thought was that it happened to the right people in the right state.

How did the flag get loose? The article doesn't address that. It says that it was over I-95, but it doesn't say where it was located and who is responsible for it.

I'm not interested in metaphors here, but I am interested in this missing facts. Now, it's common for facts to go missing, but there's no acknowledgement either way if the answers to my questions are known or unknown. Odd. To me the questions are obvious.

CBS News of all places reporting it was the flag that flies outside WWE headquarters in Stamford. If you’ve ever driven that stretch if 1-95 you probably remember it. I recall because I used to have business in that building night next to the interstate where the trains stopped. That Stamford exit was a big drug dealer spot because customers could exit 1-95 N or S, turn under the interstate bridge where dealers were waiting for your drug transaction, then conveniently enter the return side interstate and be on your way. Talk about fodder for a HBS case study…

The shocking part of the story is to learn that Connecticut still allows American flags within its borders. One could understand the holy Pride flag. Or maybe the Palestine one.

Thank goodness it didn't land on 95!

A few weeks ago, I was driving west on 80 in California, coming toward Sacramento, and a saw what appeared to be a commercial jet on an approach I'd never seen there. My dad had been stationed at McClellan AFB back when it was open; this plane seemed to be preparing to land there, and I didn't know that the runway remains in use, though there's no tower now (which my dad said, later when I asked him about it, was why the weird approach).

Anyway, it looked VERY much as if this place was just looking for a safe place to land. It was, to my eye, scarily close to 80, though I did at least realize that there was probably still a usable runway at McClellan and it was probably going to try for that.

Nevertheless - what went through my mind was, where do I bail if it looks as if this plane is going to overshoot and end up on the freeway?

With a plane, at least you know it's going to continue in the direction it's headed. With a giant fluttering flag?

Somewhere to the south along I95, there's a confederate flag next to a memorial of some sort. The flagpole is protected by a fenced area, with signage about why it's there. There are also massive, massive US flags near Camping World locations. Flags are vulnerable to both political protests and prone to self-destruction in high winds or if not maintained. Flip a coin about the cause.

The bill will probably be sponsored by well-known CT kook Rosa Delauro.

No, the really shocking part of the story is learning that the headquarters of the world's largest professional wrestling promotion business, World Wrestling Entertainment, is located in Stamford, CT. This is Vince McMahon's old organization. Imagine the shame at all those cocktail parties when somebody brings up that huge flag......

My brother's town in CT used their ladder truck to hang a huge American flag over the main drag for Christmas. Not what I expected, even a couple of decades ago. I figured all the flag waving after 9/11 had worn the locals out.

Althouse, don't you have tags for big things and small things that might apply?

Kevin said...

That flag would not even cover a football field.

A massive flag the size of a somewhat big flag.

The largest American flag ever made is the famous "Superflag". It holds the Guinness World Record and was first unfurled at the Hoover Dam in 1996.

-- Dimensions: 255 × 505 feet
-- Weight: 3,000 lbs
-- Details: It is so large it can cover 1 1/2 football fields, and its stripes alone are 20 feet wide. It requires at least 600 volunteers to transport and is stored in Long Beach, California.

The flag on its own is taking revenge on the morons of Connecticut for giving us Blumenthal and Murphy.

The power company called the flag massive. Senator Murphy, true to form, may call it a “malicious MAGA flag.”

I remember, growing up in Detroit, that the J.L. Hudson store displayed the largest American flag in the world, 90' x 230', on the facing of it's downtown store. Both the building and the flag no longer exist, but Dan Gilbert put a new one up late last year.

I can't read the NYT. Was this a Camping World flag?

I'm imagining a Times employee looking at the article, thinking about enabling the comments, and then saying, "Nah, I'm tired of this sh*t."

As with many "blue" states, there are significant "red" pockets that get no Congressional representation due to gerrymandering. Many outsiders are surprised to learn that there was a 50:50 split in the state legislature just a few short years ago. Unfortunately, between the pandemic, people fleeing high costs, and an influx of immigrants, CT is Californicating itself.
