"Everything about 'the Claw' feels tawdry, especially when they turn on the lights, which send bolts of blue and white illumination down the 154-foot interlocking steel arches...."

I'm reading "Joe Rogan called the White House UFC event ‘so America.’ He’s right. The 'Claw' bursting out of the White House grounds is the perfect metaphor for the moment, injecting bloody spectacle into the country’s birthday celebration" in the Washington Post

I'm reading that because it's by the Post's architecture critic, Philip Kennicott. He writes:

[T]he UFC match isn’t about celebrating the foundational myths of American democracy. It inhabits a landscape of darker myths, like the perpetual struggle of the frontier, the faux chivalry and resentments of the Lost Cause, the Darwinian drama of survival in a world of hostile forces, enemies, chaos....

Trump takes pleasure in presiding over conflict. The world comes to him, where he, the perpetual winner, lords over contests, over victories and defeats. You’re fired. You don’t hold any winning cards. You’ve lost the match. For many Americans, there is nothing surreal about this delight in domination. It simply reflects the world they live in, where people are losing all the time, at the gas pump, at dead-end jobs, in marriages that founder on the shoals of stress and poverty....

So, are "many Americans" bullies, or perpetual losers?

Or is the writer going for "root causes" rhetoric here, and wanting to tell us that yes, "many Americans" are bullies, but they're bullies because they're perpetual losers?

So much of "journalism" these days seems to be people who consider themselves to be elite, mouthing what they hope (or assume) sound like sentiments of compassion and understanding toward their inferiors. Sentiments that, when you scratch the surface with a fingernail (Mohs hardness scale: 2), turn out to be smirking condescension. It never seems to occur to them actually to try to understand people with a different background from theirs - only to process their already-distorted perceptions of those people through the black box of their education and social in-group markers, such that what emerges from it always meets their expectations.

A few weeks ago, on our way across the country, we spent a night in Elko, where my husband had done an internship in mining in college. We ate at a Basque restaurant that we'd gone to together some thirty-plus years ago. A big family, clearly locals, was having dinner at the next table - what appeared to be grandparents, parents, a couple of young teenagers, a few younger children. Lots of baseball caps and work boots. A girl of about twelve or thirteen said something about "hulking troglodytes" and all the adults cracked up. I doubt that any coastal "journalist" would believe that anyone in that family could even pronounce the words, much less know what they meant.

It is a special day. Donald Trump is celebrating his 80th birthday, while the republic he leads is marking its 250th anniversary. To commemorate the twin milestones, the octogenarian-in-chief has chosen a fitting tribute: a cage fight on the South Lawn of the White House, staged before several thousand spectators.

In a nod to America’s immigrant heritage, the UFC’s “Freedom 250” event is headlined by a Brazilian, a Georgian, a Frenchman, and a half-Mexican American. Inside the octagon, they will punch, kick, throw, and choke one another until only one remains standing. The family-friendly spectacle doesn’t stop there. In the name of gender equality, the six bouts of human cockfighting will also feature “octagon girls” in red, white, and blue hot pants and bustiers — as previewed in Maxim magazine.

These global UFC stars are risking brain injuries, disfigurement, and permanent disability (not to mention potential deportation or jail time). They are presumably participating out of a deep love for America — and the promise of a handsome paycheck. The UFC, led by Trump’s close friend Dana White, has touted the event as historic, promising “the biggest bonus in UFC history.”

That generous reward is being stumped up by Singapore-based Crypto.com, a company with close ties to Trump and his family ventures. The $1 million bonus, to be shared among the winners, will be paid in CRO — the cryptocurrency Crypto.com created out of thin air. Trump Media conveniently bought $105 million worth of it last year. With CRO’s value having plummeted roughly 82% over the past 10 months and trading volumes remaining thin, the fighters will enjoy the added thrill of trying to actually cash out their winnings.

One might expect the American public to be grateful for such a grand spectacle held in their honor. Yet once again, Trump supporters’ claim that he has a thankless job rings true. According to a recent poll, only 16% of Americans approve of the White House UFC fight, rising to just 31% among Republicans.

Trump simply wants to give Americans a brief reprieve from worries about war in the Middle East, rising inflation, and the nation’s rapidly depreciating global reputation. As usual, the fake news media and woke Hollywood had to ruin it. SAD!

"foundational myths of American democracy" - does he mean "We the people," or is it the myth of 'We, the Government, are here to help you?'

"a landscape of darker myths, like the perpetual struggle of the frontier" - meaning 'the oppression inherent in colonization.'

"the faux chivalry and resentments of the Lost Cause," - gotta bring up slavery, of course.

"the Darwinian drama of survival in a world of hostile forces, enemies, chaos...." - the hostility is real. The enemies are real. The chaos is real. To deny it is surrender.

The UFC does not pay locations that host events. They pay the UFC to come there, and pay them alot. However, the Federal Government is not paying for this event, in fact the UFC is picking up all costs. So the idea that it's some kickback to Dana White is retarded. Trump helped Dana White when he was starting up by having fights at his casinos (no one else would have them). White and Trump are close friends. White is loyal to Trump. If anything this a way for White to say thanks.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ చెప్పారు...

"And we have a manufacturing job boom just starting now."

Quite right -- if reporters told the truth we would see how wonderful the emperors clothes are!

The idea of restoring manufacturing to America sounds appealing, but the economic reality is far more complicated. Over the past four decades, US companies moved labor intensive production overseas because wages in countries such as China, Vietnam and Mexico were often one-sixth of American rates. That single factor, far more than trade policy, drove the global supply chain shift. A factory worker in Shenzhen might earn $4 to $5.35 an hour, compared with $26.80 to $33.50 in Michigan. Even allowing for shipping, management and compliance costs, the savings were immense.

Now, Trump imagines that tariffs can reverse this process. Yet tariffs are simply taxes paid by American consumers and businesses. They raise the price of imported goods but do nothing to narrow the fundamental labour / cost gap. Unless Americans are willing to accept far lower wages or far higher prices, many of these industries cannot profitably return. Automation may offset some of the difference, but only in capital-intensive sectors such as semiconductors or car assembly. Most routine assembly and textiles will remain cheaper abroad for years to come.

The real challenge is not tariffs but competitiveness: investing in skills, advanced robotics, and energy efficiency so that American factories can match Asian productivity. Protectionism may win applause at rallies, but it cannot repeal arithmetic. The U.S. cannot build a sustainable industrial base by pretending that a $33.50-an-hour worker can compete with one earning $5.35 unless the output per head rises by a similar multiple. Tariffs disguise that truth temporarily; they do not solve Trump’s mistaken idea.

Someone who had a more friendly feeling towards the country might see in UFC something of the strength required to brave the elements, weather hard times, and defeat Nazism, but Kennicott sees only dispossession of the natives, slavery and grim Darwinian struggle.

You can also see in his writing the war between high and popular culture. The Kennedy Center was commissioned at a time when American power was supposed to be wedded to high culture. How did that turn out? Really. Not very well for high culture at all, but one can make up for it by putting down the pastimes of the proles.

Wow, Todd. What a filmography. Your great, great Uncle certainly entertained people who needed some escape. I've seen him in old films. His face is unforgettable.

Let’s summarize. If you don’t like “the Claw” and you don’t like the UFC, you are simply an elitist snob.

Big Mike: That strikes me as a little extreme. It is very much possible to not be a UFC fan and yet not begrudge enjoyment of it. You don't have to be an "elitist" snob to not enjoy it for oneself.

Professional wrestling isn't real domination: like slapstick filmmaking, they train for years to feign injuries and mock current political stereotypes, especially international ones. That is why this spectacle is so popular with working-class men across all ethnic boundaries and thus so threatening to elite liberals. How many of you tight-asses found the indie series Glow, about female professional wrestlers, "transgressive and fascinating"?
