The linked NPR story and the study from the Association for Transgender Health frame the transition of children in a positive light. Not surprising. It's good to know you can get quality ideology-affirming news to support your biases on gender-affirming news. The trouble starts when you apply critical thinking to those stories.
Meanwhile, I saw that the Minneapolis papers are running a story about a transgender security guard who was repeatedly walking into the girls changing room at a local dance competition. A police officer was called to prevent the guard from continuing to do so. The guard is suing the city for transgender rights violations, and being in Minneapolis, will likely win. The paper's story was, of course, uncritical and sympathetic to the guard/and harsh on the policeman.
When the medical malpractice wave comes wrt this ideology, a lot of regret will appear.
First, surgery should be never, not rare. Nor, is that the only treatment that is questionable. What damage is done with puberty blockers, etc.
Second, satisfaction rates need to be stratified by time. Anyone who has gender dysphoria will likely feel happy about any level of care provided. What is the satisfaction rate at 10 years? What if it is 60% positive? Is that good enough?
Lastly, Ken Paxton is crooked piece of crap that follows the perfect script for a true conservative. Texans have had to make a choice between a RINO and true conservative crook.

I was stunned when I learned that sex changes were being performed on minors at the state-funded University of Nebraska Medical Center. A bill was proposed to stop it. Not only did the Dems want to keep child mutilation going, they filibustered nearly every bill in the session.
Dr. Jeffery Gold ran UNMC when this policy was begun. He then was nominated to be the President of the University of Nebraska system and I spoke against his nomination for having bad judgment.
In the Fall of 2025, UNMC made a semi-hostile takeover of the private Clarkson hospital. Clarkson resisted and filed a lawsuit.There was a meeting of the Board of Regents. I, again, drove to Lincoln to oppose it. Dr. Gold was now the President. I again blasted him for having bad judgment. He had a real deer-in-the-headlights look.
Clarkson dropped the lawsuit. UNMC was able to change its Board. The elected Regents voted for the deal.
There will always be a conflict between the Big Red and Creighton.

The supporting article about these surgeries being rare seems like such a snow job.
If you look up "how many coronary bypass operations are performed every year in the US?" or "how many knee replacement surgeries are performed in the US?" you get a number. These authors seem to go out of their way to avoid a clear number.
The old aphorism, "Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive but what they conceal is vital" seems particularly apropos in this context.

Sex-change hormones as a treatment for gender dysphoria have been marketed with the pitch "no worries, these are reversible."
Well, here's their chance to prove that specious claim. I rather doubt they'll be able to fix the sexually non-functional eunuchs they've created with their puberty blockers and cross-sex hormone treatments, but at least that will put the lie to their marketing claims. And if they do succeed, then some portion of the mixed-up kids they transed will have a second chance for a normal life. It's a win-win.

I'm given to understand (and I have some limited personal experience of this through HRT) that testosterone acts as an anti-depressant. I have read that there is commonly a "testosterone honeymoon" among girls and women taking it to "transition" - and also that gender transition clinics typically stop their meager efforts at follow-up well before the end of that period. (I haven't heard that estrogen has the same effect, and in my again-personal experience of first producing and then replacing estrogen, the effect of more estrogen than I should have or am used to having tends to produce impatience, hair-trigger temper, and, let's face it, bitchiness. Whether it's the same for natal males, I couldn't say.)
And furthermore - when the "transitioning" person changes names legally, there goes the ready ability to follow up because of privacy laws - at least, I have heard that this is explicitly the case in the UK, and I'd be surprised if HIPAA is any less limiting.
So it appears that any claims about "regretters" and detransitioners are probably not well founded - maybe on both sides. But considering the wild swings of my own feelings about myself (in all aspects) in adolescence and the very well founded research that I wasn't alone there but that such wild swings are an ordinary experience, I would put my money on the "there are many more, perhaps orders of magnitude more, detransitioners and regretters than the pro-transition side wants you to think there are" side.
Gusty Winds, I'm very sorry for this trouble. I hope your son can find his way out of what is bringing him to this pass, and that some kind of clarity comes to you about how to handle it.

"Transition" doesn't alter a person's "gender" any more than it alters the person's sex, especially since "gender," as used here, really is a personal social construct and can be whatever the person says it is with no physical manifestation at all.

As an interested onlooker with a reasonable ability to evaluate competing claims, I still have zero idea how many transitioners experience some (or a lot) of regret.
We had friends, good-hearted people of progressive mien, whose daughter at least socially transitioned at age 14, more or less at the beginning of the social contagion (and something like three or four of the girl's classmates, just in her fairly small homeroom alone, declared themselves to be trans at the same time. Sigh).
They were thrown back on their heels, but instantly "affirming," which struck me as strange, since the usual thing one hears when a kid comes out as gay, for instance, is that the parents, knowing their child, always knew something was different about the child. Their way of describing what has transpired was, "The child we have is not the child we thought we had." I'd also known the girl since she 4, and while she was certainly different, her difference never showed up as related to her perception of her identity, gender or otherwise: she was VERY clear on who she was. So why wouldn't parents question, seek other explanations, at least stall?
But, after all, they were the parents. What could I possibly know about their struggle with their daughter's adolescent craze - as I saw it then and actually still do, ten years later? As far as I could tell, she didn't go on hormones then she had no surgeries before she 16, at least, which was the last time I saw her (still going by "him"), so at least there's that: they didn't strap themselves and her to the bandwagon at that tender age.

And then the start of the hellish descent: Starting in on the physical, irreversible changes, the hormones that prevent any recourse to normal puberty, the surgical savagery, mutilations dooming a person from ever reproducing or even experiencing the joy of an orgasm. that spiritual connection, and then, the capper, the coup de grâce: A lifetime of medical complications, requiring constant, unpleasant and expensive maintenance, all to accomplish the goal of approximating the opposite sex.
What better torture for a disturbed mind, how can one possibly think of a better way to inflict lifetime damnation? Monstrous doesn't begin to describe the human-looking thing that would inflict this on a vulnerable child.
