Excellent advice for the left, from Conservative MP Jack Rankin, in the New Statesman:

"Might I suggest that the Labour Party spend less time trying to answer Tarquin of Islington’s question – 'What is the Prime Minister going to do to prevent the trans community of Palestine being adversely affected by climate change?' – and more time working out why a block of Cathedral City [cheese] costs £6 in Tesco Express and now has to sit in a security box?"

The left is so obsessed with words and jargon, you'd think they notice they got the shit direction, and we got the cool one. "Why are we stuck in the fucking French revolution? We're right, so we should be on the right. Right?"

"We're on the left. Right next to Satan. It's tradition."

Why Trump Bucked His Party and Made a Risky Bet on Ken Paxton ~ WSJ
'President emboldened by recent electoral victories and frustrated with congressional Republicans who backed Paxton’s GOP opponent'

He has a very solid grip on the Republican Party. If you like Trump and what he’s doing, you vote Republican. If not, you don’t. Politics has become remarkably simple in that regard. There’s not much more to the meta-analysis these days.

American politics is now extremely nationalized and centered around Trump — which is exactly what he has always wanted. At this moment, given his approval numbers, it’s also exactly what Democrats want.

While there are still Republicans and Republican-leaning voters who aren’t big Trump fans, his control over the party is stronger than ever. That makes most elections much simpler: Republican essentially equals Trump, and little else.

I'm not really for dredging up people's posts from the distant past, just because they are running for office. Those are all cheap shots, I think. I already know a good bit about Platner's character, but when somebody who's just a schmo is gabbing in a discussion forum a dozen years ago (or whatever), that's a context that is so distant from a campaign candidate, that it seems absurd to dredge it up and think it means anything. 'Oh, look ! Here's his fingerpaint from primary school, we've had our psychologist analyze it.....'

Platner could win or lose, but it shouldn't be decided on the basis of something like that. Not that I don't understand the tactic would be deployed against a Republican every quicker and dirtier.

Gallrein is an interesting name. If it's German, and not just coincidentally German-looking, it means something like 'pure gall', 'pure bile', or 'pure bitterness'. I say "something like" because Google Translate tells me the actual German phrase meaning those things would be 'Reine Galle', with the adjective before the noun and some -e declension endings. But the stems of the two words, as opposed to the -e endings, are REIN and GALL. Can a native German-speaker tell us whether fellow Germans would hear it that way?

Set the oven at 400 Fahrenheit.
Take a bowl, maybe 5" across, and 4" high, and put in, say, 4 Tbsp of olive oil. And 2 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar, and maybe a Tbsp of garlic powder (I don't measure, so these are estimates).
Then, you take some potatoes - those Yukon Golds are excellent, but so are Russets and reds. Probably any potato is going to work just fine. Slice it into slices about 3/16" (so, there will be slices that are 1/8, and some that are 1/4. That's OK).
Put a few in the bowl, and then start feeding more in from the right side, sliding them in under the ones that are already there. This gets them covered in the oil, but then they pooch up on the left side, and they have a little time to drain.
Take the ones that have drained, from the left side, and lay them out on a baking pan. Don't worry about putting aluminum foil on the pan, unless you really want to die of Alzheimer's. Just lay them out, close together, on the iron baking pan.
Keep putting new slices in, from the right side, and taking the drained ones out on the other side, and putting them on the baking pan. When you have mostly used them up, slice another potato.
When the pan is full, put it in the oven, and set the timer at 10 minutes. When it goes off, take them out, and scrape them off the baking pan with a spatula. Try to turn them over, but don't get fanatic about it. If there is oil/vinegar left, pour it over them now. Put 'em back in, for 10 more minutes.
At this point, play it by ear. If they look done after 20 minutes, they're done. If not, cook 'em some more. You can also turn the oven off, but leave them in, if you think they're almost done. Works for me.
You're going to want a dipping sauce. Ranch works, but I like a garlic/cream cheese sauce. Just what it sounds like. Put some cream cheese in a bowl, on the stove, where it will get warmed by the oven. Add crushed raw garlic, however much you can stand. Since I lost my sense of smell to covid, my family says I'm a bit extreme with the garlic. Anyway, mash it up and swirl it around, and there you go.

The Platner jerky-jerky stuff is about the military tradition of wanking in port a potties because it is one of the very few private places available on a deployment. Check out her official, professionally posed, and retouched campaign portrait, her best foot forward, as it were... Not a genuine toad, but not sexy. Everything about her is slightly off-kilter, like a house that has settled badly. Her nose is too large, as are her teeth, which remind me of piano keys rather than a set of ideal human gnashers. (If that was my mouth, I think I'd take my cosmetic dentist to court.) Her eyes are just eyes -- no expression. If the eyes are the windows of the soul, Galindo's have the curtains drawn.

It used to be the basis for bipartisan agreement: “Israel has a right to exist.”

Mike, I don't entirely disagree but as with many "bipartisan" positions the actual agreement was a bit more, to use a nice word, nuanced.

I would phrase it “Israel has a right to exist if it can establish and defend its borders the way any other country can.” For the pro-Israel group in the US this meant supporting its defense efforts, for the anti-Israel group this meant quietly waiting for Arab demographics to overwhelm it. Thus you get "anti-Zionism" which attacks Israel's ability to safeguard its people and territory, and the rejection of any effective 'two state' solution. As it looks more and more like Israel is not going to be overwhelmed, and is in fact more secure and stable than most Mid-east countries, the "anti-Zionist" faction is getting louder.

Youth doing weird and dumb stuff is neither right nor left, just routine teenage rebellion. They go south with gangs and violence and transitions and cults and Joan of Arc / Greta Thunberg zealotry. Bad parenting = worst outcomes.

As a fair-minded commenter, it's my job to counterbalance every story about Trump giving $1.7 billion taxpayer dollars to MAGA criminals with a story about Obama approving a loan to Solyndra in 2009.

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

IDK Chris you might be too young to remember pols being questioned on TV, and I vividly remember that simple question being asked many times in the 70s: "Does Israel have the right to exist?"

The revisionists may want to backwardly project nuance on it but it was a simple question and it served to sort out the cranks from the common folk. We don't actually get a vote on which countries exist. It was an academic exercise, a theoretical construct.

No one imposes nuance on the question, "Does Russia have a right to exist?" We just accept that in fact Russia does exist and behave accordingly.

The homely sex therapist, Tucker, Candace, Me-Again, all of them spouting anti-semitic hate - I am inclined to believe that all of them are doing it not because of a deeply held, well-informed belief, but because some kind of market intelligence has steered them into thinking this will be a money-maker. The politician, to get elected, and the talking heads, because they are hunting clicks. What an appalling indictment of the absolute empty-headed shallowness of media culture, if so. It makes me wonder if somebody is setting all of these dopes up. Remember, anybody that talks for a living will say anything to earn that living.

The question is not "Does Israel* have a right to exist?" The question is "How much must non-Israealis sacrifice to insure that it does?"

Completely legitimate question for voters in the US to think about.

*Or Ukraine, or Taiwan, or Poland u.s.w.

Talk about topic police . . .

I reread what the Prof said. She did not say "write about whatever RCOCEAN II approves."

But you remind me that it's time to see if anyone has bothered to comment on your shit blog.

OK Narr, what is this "sacrifice" of which you speak? That's vague.

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

According to /USA Facts, "Since FY 2001, $150.1 billion in US foreign aid has gone to Afghanistan, the most of any country."

Boy, that's over 50% higher than our aid to Israel. I wonder who sacrificed what to get aid for Afghanistan...

Narr કહ્યું...

I pay taxes, MJBW, some of which go to foreign countries. In the worst-case scenario, Americans might be sent to fight in those countries, and wars often spiral out of control and require sacrifices unseen at the beginning.

As for Afghanistan, I wouldn't risk a broken toe for the whole place and everyone in it.

One of those things is not like the others. At least IMO.

Narr કહ્યું...

What are you getting at, MJBW?

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

The Venn Diagram of the three subjects you listed.

Narr કહ્યું...

Venn diagram? Really.

The three-item list was not mine. Review the comments to see who brought them up.

The three items or topics are all important in any discussion of the last hundred years in world politics, but Venn diagrams aren't that relevant. IMO.

And I can talk about them for hours!

We should have taken the mullahs out 47 years ago. It is good of Israel to help us with the problem even if there is mutual benefit.

Narr, all of your responses/queries have been elliptical. You rewrote my question posed at 647am in your 902am comment. I attempted to get you to expound on it. At 1100am I quoted what you wrote. Who GAF it's not your list!

I no longer do assigned reading. So this exchange must be over.

As far as international affairs at the moment, a strict Toynbeean (I'm just a kinda-sorta pseudo Toynbeean) would see it as the latest attempt by a hegemon to institute a Universal State.

Narr કહ્યું...

Not that I was going to see Nolan's latest anyway, but now I find out that Achilles is played by (drum roll please)--

Eliot Fucking Page.

That reminded me of how I used to crack my son and his friends up when I asked if the little flying creature in the He-Man cartoons was He-Man.

Good times. I look forward, of course, to the MST3-like fiskings that are showing up online.

What an odd comment. I havent posted on my blog in 6.5 years. And in 13 years it was active, I never allowed any comments except by people I knew. Frankly, I don't know how Althouse does it. She's cut off comments occasionally. I would've nuke 'em after the superstars like Trooper, etc. left.

But I appreciate that she's much more patient and tolerate than I would ever be.
