"Some psychiatrists said they worried that Mr. Kennedy’s deprescribing initiative was the beginning of a wider effort that might, in later stages, discredit psychiatry more broadly and restrict access to care."
"'I think it is actually putting more questions in people’s minds about whether psychiatric treatment is safe or effective,' said Dr. Eric Rafla-Yuan, who chairs the [American Psychiatric Association's] caucus on the social determinants of health. 'The data has not changed on S.S.R.I.s. It’s the narrative that has changed.' He said the A.P.A. should be pushing back forcefully against Mr. Kennedy’s claims about psychiatric treatments, and should steer clear of seeming to endorse any part of the initiative. 'It’s a fine line between having a seat at the table and being used as a tool to legitimize their agenda,' he said."

Well seasoned meat brains with benefits.
just "curbing" them is wrong in the eyes of the know-it-all corrupt left?
oh do f off.
all of these fucking drug dealing shitheads belong in jail.
I have loved ones who are thriving on antidepressants. I'm a big fan. But even I think the psychiatric profession needs to do a lot better at establishing its scientific legitimacy and reducing knee-jerk over-prescription.
You shall not stop taking YOUR DRUGS. Here. Take another med to help stop the weird shaking from the side effects the first drug cause.
The left think it is funny to kill a healthcare CEO.
The left are collectively mentally unstable. is there a drug for that?
SSRIs are a useful temporary intervention.
However, almost all of the psychiatrists that I worked with saw them as a permanent lifelong intervention. A lot of modern psychologists agree with the psychiatrists because it makes their jobs easier.
Don't we really need to ask ourselves the following question: are we collectively more mentally well off today or before the widespread use of "anti-depressives?
The biggest consumers of these "psychiatric" drugs are cubicle dwelling harem girls with advanced college degrees being paid to do worthless shit and all of the money they spend on their designer drugs is just inflationary pressure on the economy that produces no value for society.
Tell people the whole truth about these drugs and let them make informed decisions. They have been around since the 50's. There should be enough data to allow people to make the choice themselves. Their bodies their choice. Wait... Where have I heard that before?
ai: "The history and evolution of these medications occurred in a few key stages:
1950s (First Generation): The very first antidepressants were discovered by accident. Doctors noticed that a tuberculosis drug called iproniazid dramatically improved the mood of patients. This led to the creation of MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) and TCAs (Tricyclic Antidepressants). While highly effective, these early drugs carried significant side effects and toxicities.
1987 (The SSRI Revolution): The introduction of fluoxetine (brand name Prozac) changed mental healthcare. It was the first SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor), which became incredibly popular because it was much safer and had fewer side effects than the earlier generations.
1990s & Beyond: Following the success of Prozac, a wave of other widely used SSRIs and SNRIs (Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) like sertraline (Zoloft) and venlafaxine (Effexor) were released."
They love selling drugs. It's not just drugs for depression, it is for everything.
Ever read the warnings on drugs for allergies? and the warning to never quit them without talking to your doctor, because 'side effects'.
Anti depression drugs are even more powerful. Yet doctors push them on people who are just having a rough time- here, this will help you sleep etc. Oh, you can't sleep taking drug X? Here is something that will fix that.
With our record on improving the natural design of things, I'd prefer we do less of all of it. The natural tendency of humans is to do things more and more until we break something. I think we passed that point with Psychiatry. With all the new knowledge, medicines, experts, and years of "science", we have more mental health issues than ever, and why is it so much higher with leftists and women? Maybe the problem is culture not chemistry.
learn to live with some depression. It's normal. it's natures way of telling you to get out of your head. go do something nice for someone else. You'd be surprised how that can lift your mood.
Would be a great bit of guerrilla politics to flood the internet with anti-pharmaceutical material, tipping the balance of what AIs draw from, so people get turned away from the meds at what is now the first step in the patient’s journey.
RFK could hire some DOGE dudes to set up a server that blasts out massive loads of the stuff. Elon could donate blue checkmarks and retweets. CC, JSM
Some depression and severe depression are very different things.
What makes people question psychotherapy is psychotherapists.
Yes, Peachy, some depression is a survival adaptation. If sabertooth tigers, enemy tribes, famine, etc, are making your life suck, going to the mattresses in the cave, with minimal signature to draw bad attention, may keep you alive until things get better. It’s like the clandestine patrol base - Achilles knows what I’m talking about.
Another installment in my Mental Illnesses Used To Be Evolutionary Advantages series. CC. JSM
Is there any person alive (and not either a psychiatrist or affiliated with the pharmaceutical industry) who doesn't believe, based on common-sense observation, that SSRI's are overprescribed?
Note--I am not opposed to SSRI's properly prescribed and administered.
Oh noes no more soma what will they do now
The only solution is to undo the ACA (Obamacare) mandates. It embedded corruption in the medical industry and drove both SSRI and transgender "diagnoses."
The Democrats are in bed with doctors, the AMA/APA lobbying orgs, medical insurance firms, pharma firms, and the Wall Street bankers who fund them. The nominal "progressive" checks and balances against big business flew out the window with Pelosi, Schumer, and Biden in power for centuries. The next gen lefties are too coddled and fuzzy and utopian to understand.
Junior' is playing his preferred role perfectly. He's been intelligently avoiding any self-aggrandizement, any spotlight seeking, and he doesn't speak much publicly, unless it's to support the administration.
But just listen to all those rice bowls being nervously rattled. Big Food, Big Pharma, Big Medicine, all industries that have enjoyed a very easy regulatory ride for a very long time. And a nation where chronic illness is a rather large chronic problem, with rather large gaps in effective solutions, and no particular passion of their part for solving them.

Standard Army doctrine: Embrace the Suck.
If it starts raining or you are walking into a swamp hold your gun above your head and jump in the biggest puddle you can find. It can't get any worse after that.
Then you find the place where nobody wants to walk and camp there. Usually in a shitty wet muddy hole surrounded by thick brush.
Depression is a coping mechanism. You learn to derive joy from the suck and take naps. If you are going to be bored staring at the same tree all day you might as well be wet and mud soaked.
But keep you gun out of the mud. Your gun is important and has to work.
They didn't give us SSRIs though.
We got chewing tobacco and caffeine.
As if that is better.
...Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s call to rein in the use of depression medications. Some fear it will drive patients away from care" (NYT).
I suspect, after decades, many of the same people who equate reining in the "useless, endless" prescription of anti-depressants with being "anti-care" are quite ready to declare Iran already another "useless, endless" war.
""'I think it is actually putting more questions in people’s minds about whether psychiatric treatment is safe or effective"
What "questions" might those be? As it happens, there is no "safe or effective" treatment for serious mental disease -- psychosis, schizophrenia, etc. Talk therapy is useless in those cases and psychotropic drugs are intended to help the staff control otherwise agitated or unruly patients by making the patient lethargic or submissive. Essentially, it's just a chemical lobotomy. To the extent there is any science involved, it's mostly about identifying what isn't understood and what doesn't work.
Hmmm..."psychiatrists worry?" Perhaps they could seek out a trusted therapist to deal with this.
they don’t wanna be tools to implement someone else’s agenda because that interferes with them implementing their own agenda
Control freaks want to tranquilize everybody. I'm more of an up-and-down man. I've gotten to where I don't take any drugs at all. Not even aspirin.
The AMA has doctors aborting healthy pregnancies for money. $1 billion industry. Doctors do plastic surgery now, so you will look pretty. Another huge industry.
The docs used to be very excited about giving steroids to girls, and castrating boys. New markets! When I was a kid, doctors were worried about steroids causing cancer in boys. "Don't try to be big and strong. Steroids cause cancer." Now, the doctors hand out steroids to girls like they are M&Ms.
Throwing out the Hippocratic Oath was a mistake, AMA. Having doctors repeat the Oath in Latin is bullshit, AMA. You fucking suck, AMA.
Physician, heal thyself. Luke 4:23.
IIt's scary all the things that doctors can do with drugs now. They drug boys to keep them organized and quiet.
Some of the biggest drug pushers now are doctors. Dr. Gosnell was caught because he was one of the biggest drug-pushers in the state of Pennsylvania.
Half a million people died from the fentanyl epidemic. They had prescriptions, a lot of prescriptions.
No industry likes being regulated by the government. It's so funny to hear the NYT worry about government regulations.
"How dare you regulate my abortion clinic with your damn health inspections."
The AMA is not there to protect the public.
The APA is not there to protect the public.
I can't believe libertarians have to teach the NYT about the importance of health regulations on industries driven by the profit-motive. Wake up, you clueless socialists.
Our message from the psychiatric industrial complex.
Bobby Kennedy Jr. remains true to his liberal roots. He didn't have to change, to join the Trump administration. He's just protecting the public from the evils of Big Medicine.
There are no drugs for TDS, so the NYT remains undiagnosed and untreated.
Peachy, It's fundamental to AA process to be of service. To, as you say, get out of your head and go do something (doesn't really matter what) for someone else.
