"So when in middle school other kids began to tease and bully Evan, saying that his channel was 'cringe' and that he was too old to be playing with toys, Evan was taken aback...."

"He recalled that in middle school, haters in the comments called him 'spoiled,' and people told him things he had never considered before. His parents were 'taking advantage' of him, they said, or 'using you for money,' Evan told me. 'That definitely made me feel sad. Like, sad-angry.' He started telling his parents he didn’t want to review toys anymore and withdrew to his room....  'I had to really make a case to my parents,' he told me. 'It took them time to understand that I was growing up.'...  In middle school, when Evan had the impulse to post on Twitter that he was 'really sad,' his parents discouraged him. 'You don’t need to let the internet know all of your emotions,' he remembered them saying.... "

From "When a Child’s Life Becomes the Family Business/Evan Lee, better known as EvanTube, still had his baby teeth when he became an influencer. Now he’s ready to reflect on what that kind of exposure meant" (NYT).

This somehow reminds me of the quadriplegic guy on the “Ballad of Lester Scruggs” that had to recite poetry for the crowd to make money for the old guy. But he got replaced.

So he's moving up, now. He doesn't try to influence just anybody, any more.

Ryan’s Toy Reviews was the great winner in this odd race.

Accumulated a $30 million fortune.

I wonder how much money Greta Thunberg's parents have made from her performance art?

Counter-influencer culture.

Half-Asian kid. Chinese father, but his non-Asian mother sounds like the terrible tiger mom. EvanTube's family became known as the TubeFamily. Sister Jillian had her own JillianTube channel. Tiger mom Alisa became known as MommyTube, which might make one think of something else.

Evan's friend Ryan's family set up a channel of their own, Ryan Kaji. Because Ryan had twin sisters his family's channels eventually dwarfed EvanTube's.

Almost everyone gets teased in middle school. The key is to punch one of the bullies in front of everyone.

That also would have made the toy channel better.

It’s like they don’t believe diversity is our strength.

Kevin చెప్పారు...

Don’t those bullies know that kid could hire a hitman?

You’d think, because they’re surrounded by educators, that someone would have clued them in.

I’ve often wondered what happens to the cash that minors earn. There is no Cogan Law equivalent that protects them.
