"It turns out that the United States and Israel went into the conflict with a particular and very surprising someone in mind: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad..."

So it says here in "Early War Goal Was to Install Hard-Line Former President as Iran’s Leader/An Israeli strike designed to free Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from house arrest in Tehran, U.S. officials said, was part of an effort to bring about regime change and put him in power" (NYT)(gift link).
To say that Mr. Ahmadinejad was an unusual choice would be a vast understatement. While he had increasingly clashed with the regime’s leaders and had been placed under close watch by the Iranian authorities, he was known during his term as president, from 2005 to 2013, for his calls to “wipe Israel off the map.” He was a strong supporter of Iran’s nuclear program, a fierce critic of the United States and known for violently cracking down on internal dissent.
It seems incredible. And, we're told, it "quickly went awry."
Mr. Ahmadinejad was injured on the war’s first day by an Israeli strike at his home in Tehran that had been designed to free him from house arrest, the American officials and an associate of Mr. Ahmadinejad said. He survived the strike, they said, but after the near miss he became disillusioned with the regime change plan. He has not been seen publicly since then and his current whereabouts and condition are unknown.

Why are we hearing about this now? Is this disinformation?

The "I'm skeptical" tag seems apt. Whether or not they are acting as the steno pool for the Deep State the NYT writers are some of the hardest working fabulists in media today. My hunch is that we value the oil infrastructure in Iran more than the people in charge of Iran do. The expectation was that the regime stragglers would want to keep that asset in place.

The guy running Iran is Ahmad Vahidi, who's in charge of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Those are the fanatics who murdered 30,000 Iranians in the streets before the war started.

The current president, Masoud Pezeshkian, is the guy who's frantic for a peace deal because he's being blamed for the economic sinkhole that is Iran's economy right now.

Historically, the elected leader is just a facade. Iran is a religious dictatorship. Ruled by Khomeini for decades, and then Khameini. He was killed. His son, supposedly, is the ruler in charge of Iran. But nobody has seen him and there are no videos of him. People suspect that he's in a coma, or horribly disfigured, or both. He might be dead.

Ahmadinejad is a Holocaust-denier, wants Iran to have a nuke, and wants to wipe Israel off the map. On the positive side, he didn't murder 30,000 Iranians before the war started. Any of the civilian presidents would be an upgrade from Vahidi and the IRGC. Vahidi's a walking war criminal and there's an active red notice on him from Interpol for murdering Jews in Argentina.

I'm sure the Trump administration, and the Israelis, have some favorites they are hoping will emerge on top. Since the NYT has recently opined that Jews are training dogs to rape Palestinians, it is clear that that newspaper will print any damn thing that is leaked to them. Particularly something that makes Israelis look stupid and incompetent. Which they are not.

rather simple matter to pay an associate of Ahmadinejad to say some wild, crazy shit

then you have somebody leak from the White House

1. The White House is trying to sabotage Ahmadinejad, for some damn reason, that doesn't make a lot of sense, he's completely out of power

2. It's 3-D chess and they're trying to make Ahmadinejad relevant again, to disguise the real people we want in power, whoever that is, maybe the acting president

3. Israel and/or the Trump administration is just having fun blowing up the reputation of the NYT, that piece of shit propaganda rag

4. The story is true and the US actually wanted the former president back in power. The Jerusalem Post reports that Ahmadinejad has said nice things about Trump and the Shah. He's one of many people we would prefer to Vahidi. Yes, Ahmadinejad hosted a Holocaust-denial conference. But he also went to NYC and chatted with students at Columbia (a.k.a. Islamic paradise). Any world traveler is an upgrade from a war criminal hiding from Interpol.

5. While #4 might be true, what stinks like bad fish is that it's in the NYT. Why? Why would Ahmadinejad's buddy and accomplice rat him out? And why would the Trump administration leak out the truth to the NYT, that propaganda fish-wrap that no Republican likes?

I think that killing those 150 schoolgirls in the first minutes made siding with the United States kind of toxic. Imagine if a foreign country had come in to foment a coup immediately after 9-11, such events made opposition toxic in Iran, and unified the country to the point where we seem to think that the only way we can win, and gain back control of their oil, not to make the Strait free for navigation, but just the opposite, so that we can stop it from going to China, the only way we can win is to destroy there country and leave them back in the stone age, kind of like we did with Syria and Libya. Iraq, we just made it so that anybody who buys their oil has to give the money to the US, and they have to come to us for it and explain what they are going to use it for. Trump has already threatened Iraq that if they put in the leader the people of Iraq elected, we were going to withhold their oil money.

Maybe it will work, maybe we will get our "thousand year reich" out of it, but don't come to me telling me that it is to prevent the next holocaust, too late, it's already happening in Gaza, the West Bank, and Southern Lebanon, but it's to put a boot on the neck of the rest of the world for all time.

Despite leadership losses and economic strain, Iran’s military and political ranks remain united, bolstered by Russo-Chinese backing. Experts note Iran’s strategy of dispersing military assets and leveraging control over the strait has so far outmaneuvered Washington’s shifting war aims. I think that both things are true. I would like to believe that Trump is fully aware of the actual degree of impatience of the American public (as well as the "impatience" conveyed by the MSM) and is acting accordingly.

Did he seem like a guy desperate to open the Strait when he was in China last week? Not to me.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

In recent years, Mr. Ahmadinejad has clashed with regime leaders, accusing them of corruption, and rumors have swirled about his loyalties. He was disqualified from numerous presidential elections, his aides were arrested and Mr. Ahmadinejad’s movements were increasingly restricted to his home in the Narmak section of eastern Tehran.

I believe this.

There were also initial reports at the time in the Iranian media that Mr. Ahmadinejad had been killed in the strike on his home.

The strike did not significantly damage Mr. Ahmadinejad’s house at the end of a dead-end street. But the security outpost at the entrance to the street was struck. Satellite imagery shows that building was destroyed.

In the days that followed, official news agencies clarified that he had survived but that his “bodyguards” — in actuality Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps members who were both guarding him and holding him under house arrest — were killed.

I believe this, too.

I think there's some factual truth underlying this article (probably from Bergman, the Israeli journalist in the Middle East). And on top of that, there's some anti-Israel and anti-USA spin, plus speculation.

How about, there was no plan to "install" Ahmadinejad as president, they just thought it would be a good idea to free him. So the NYT skews the story, making it seem like a failure.

There are many unanswered questions about how Israel and the United States planned to put Mr. Ahmadinejad in power

how about, there was no plan

How Mr. Ahmadinejad was recruited to take part remains unknown.

how about, they didn't recruit him, they didn't say shit to him, they just blew up the IRGC assholes who had him under house arrest.

I think there's some factual truth in the story, and a pile of NYT exaggeration put on top of it. They imagine a grandiose plan to "install" Ahmadinejad (bullshit), and then they crow about how it failed and Israel failed and Trump failed and blah blah blah.

Lazarus કહ્યું...

Yeah, I heard that story weeks ago. How long does it take?

I'm paying higher gas prices, which pisses me off. I'm willing to do that in exchange for winning.

I'm NOT willing to do that so Trump can feel better about "not killing people."

It is time to start killing the people running Iran, and anyone around them, and keep on doing it until they are no longer running Iran.

The people running Iran are murdering Iranian civilians during this cease fire.

Bush 41 called on Iraq to get rid of Saddam, then when the people rose up, he sat back and let Saddam's Revolutionary Guard murder them. Which meant when we finally invaded in 2003, no one wanted to back us.

WTF is Trump doing the same thing with Iran?

When you go to war with a gov't, destroy it. Kill everyone running it. Leave a crater that says "do not fight us, ever."

Trump needs to stop pussying around, stop trying t get a "deal", and kill all the Mad Mullahs and their supporters.

"My hope is that during this cease fire we have been getting guns to the Iranian opposition."

Why? You don't live in Iran. Why do you care what kind of Government they have? You don't care about a zillion other countries that have less than stellar human rights records. You don't care about israel's war crimes or the oppressions of the Gazans or Arabs on the West bank or in Lebanon.

But for some mysterious reason you're all worked up over the Iranian "dictatorship". Why? And what happened to your concern for the Russians? Weren't they moaning under the heel of that evil Putin?

BTW, I just skipping around Youtube, bored at "work" and found The Huckster aka Mike huckabee on something called "J-TV". It seems to an Israeli/zionist/jewish channel. And there he is in all his glory, the so-called American, so-called "Christian" supporting Israeli war crimes, bashing Americans, and trying to kiss the ass of the Israelis.

Its turned my stomach. But we've always had traitors and Elmer Gantrys that would sell their Grandmother for 25 cents and a beer. Remember LBJ covered up the USS Liberty attack. But then "American boys" didn't mean squat to that weirdo. What a few on the USS Liberty when thousands are dying in 'nam for no reason.

The Strait of Hormuz isn’t chopped liver. And neither is the intention to build nuclear weapons. That’s why we care about Iran and you know that.

New Iran peace proposal triggers tense Trump-Netanyahu call ~ AXIOS

"Trump told Netanyahu that mediators were working on a "letter of intent" the US & Iran would sign to formally end the war & launch negotiations... A US source said 'Bibi's hair was on fire after the call.'"

Was always going to end this way.

It is striking how few people are defending the war these days.
