"Contrast the way UFO belief operates with historical celestial apparitions, such as the aerial phenomena associated with the Virgin Mary in Fátima, Portugal..."

"... on October, 13, 1917. On that day, approximately 70,000 people reported witnessing a variety of celestial phenomena. The people ranged from devout Catholics to atheists and skeptics who were there to disprove the testimonies of witnesses. But the institutional church influenced the interpretation of that event, and the devout welcomed their interpretation. The UFO community is not as trusting. It is characterized by suspicion of conventional authority, be that the Catholic Church or the U.S. government. Rather than being defined by a hierarchy, UFO belief has been shaped by pop culture. For decades, films and television series such as 'Star Trek' and 'Star Wars' offered cosmologies populated with advanced intelligences. These stories did not create belief in UFOs, but they helped establish a cultural vocabulary through which anomalous experiences could be understood. Most significantly, 'The X Files' popularized the idea that governments conceal knowledge about nonhuman intelligence.... Each new file release, leaked testimony or declassified video generates further interpretation rather than closure. The two most famous catchphrases from 'The X Files' — 'I want to believe' and 'the truth is out there' — express this perfectly...."

The last post on this subject bewildered me in one way. Talk of UFOs immediately veers into “belief” and is often attached to the subject “aliens” although neither belief nor aliens is necessary to observe a flying object one is unable to identify.

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

For contrast consider the implied obverse: people exist who don’t believe that any flying objects are unidentifiable.

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

Almost every Project Blue Book investigation is about observers, eye witnesses, to something unidentified. Only the fictional version has a fetish with alien beings. Yes there are “kidnap” accounts too and other oddities but the main theme was flying craft.

“ But the institutional church influenced the interpretation of that event, and the devout welcomed their interpretation.”
The Virgin Mary had been appearing to three peasant children once a month since May of that year, 1917. They were roundly dismissed by families and friends; the local bishop was skeptical to say the least; civil aithorities persecuted them. And then The Virgin told the children that on her last apparition in October, she would effect a great sign. This is what Catholics call the “ miracle of the sun”, seen by approximately 100,000 people including hostile reporters and scientists. The church investigates supernatural phenomena for years before making a determination, and finally determined that the events at Fatima were of supernatural origin. No one is required to believe it, of course. But to imply that the church was spinning this to exploit the ignorant masses is just bunk.

Or, the Gospels are historical and spiritual truth, and that feels really good.

As humans, being the top of to food chain, many believe we are also the top of the dimensional life chain. Aliens, whether real or not, just reinforce those who cannot imagine life outside the third dimension.

Physics theories like Space-Time Relativity, String Theory, Kaluza-Klein theory rely on dimensions beyond the third.

The Gospels are real. God is real. Jesus is real. Mary is real. And so is the promised life after death.

It's not only religion that is losing trust, it's government, so when we see those lights in the sky, we figure it's something Uncle Sam (or Uncle Vlad or Uncle Xi) cooked up.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ along with $1.8bn of Kleptocracy કહ્યું...

I would love to see evidence of alien contact, but the reality is quite otherwise.

It's a fascinating topic to discuss, but there are only 3 facts available for consideration: there are mind-boggling numbers of extra-terrestrial planets, life appeared on Earth, no single scientifically verifiable instance of alien activity has ever been observed.

However advanced your technology is, you can't exceed light speed, so you're doomed to stay in your own cosmic backyard.

If there are aliens who know better, where are they?

Gospace કહ્યું...

Are there aliens in this galaxy? I used to think yes, of course there are. The galaxy is an immense place. This is it's size (maybe, sort of...):
Width (Diameter): 100,000 light-years
Thickness at spiral arms: 1000 light-years
Thickness at the central bulge: somewhere between 10 and 30 thousand light-years

How many stars? Estimated between 100 and 400 billion.

That's big, and a lot of stars.

I used to believe, "Of course there's intelligent life out there!" Now? There likely isn't. Why the change? The study of things that cannot actually be studied in any meaningful way. Too many uncertainties, but...

First, The Fermi Question, over and above the class of questions known as Fermi questions: "Where are they?" This question comes from an earlier question he gave to a group of students- "How many civilizations are there in this galaxy more then 50 thousand years older then us?" The answer IIRC was about 50. We know how to travel at 10% of light speed, it's a trivial engineering problem to do so and build generation ships that can do it. If 50 or more existed, not only would there be overwhelming evidence they were out there, but we would be them.

Fermi's students didn't use the Drake Equation (aka the Greenbank Equation) N = R∗ × fp × ne × fl × fi × fc × L. But no matter how you guesstimate, no matter how many other factors you throw in, everyone always comes up with an N far greater then 1.

Where to start your journey? The Anthropic Cosmological Principle by Barrow and Tipler. Buried in this is a philosophical point. In order for a universe to exist, it must be observed. Which means there must be an observer within the universe. Which means a universe without intelligent live cannot exist. And then this can be boiled down to what is referred to as the "Ultimate Anthropic Principle". One intelligence is necessary and sufficient for a universe to exist, and we are that sole intelligence. Also compatible with Genesis 1.1: "And God created the heavens and the earth."

Contemplating the existence of aliens can lead you down many rabbit holes.

imTay કહ્યું...

"In 1917 they asked 70,000 people? I'm skeptical."

They were all in one place, Fatima, it makes it sound like the phenomena were seen worldwide, obviously factors of social pressure, etc, were involved.

"The study of things that cannot actually be studied in any meaningful way."

You mean that it's just one more form of theology, where "truth value" derives solely from authority, no matter how you dress it up with "math" and "logic"? You can't prove a negative, and absence of evidence without an impossible comprehensive examination of the space involved, is not evidence of absence, but you can't prove a positive without evidence either, the best you can do is say "If my reasoning is correct, then there is X probability of whatever."

I caught it a couple times, nothing severe, just a cold/flu thing, but I did lose my sense of taste and smell for weeks. 8 weeks after the second shot, I had a clot in my heart that was 100% blockage, and would have been fatal, if I didn't go to the emergency room just a few blocks away. I collapsed walking in front door. They opened it up and put in a stent. The curious thing is that I had just been in for a check up right before Covid started, and and my heart checked out fine. Since then, scans have showed no significant plaque in my arteries. Where did the clot come from?

Ball lightning? Real or not?

As of right now, scientists admit it's real. Used to be they chalked up observations, such as the one I had, to imagination or exaggerated tales. Ah, but it was real. Saw it at or close to ground level. Disappeared rapidly. Have one friend, I know of, that saw it come through his front door and leave scorch marks across the floor. Seen by his mother. Who attributed it to God and a sign he should get married to the girl and not live with her in sin.

Observations that are real but rare will sometimes assume supernatural explanations. And while scientists now admit the reality of ball lightning, the explanations of what is it is are not proven and speculative. Have you seen it?

“ Spies were sent to the continent to arrest Tyndale, but he remained in hiding. Copies of his New Testament translation were printed in Europe and smuggled into England. In 1535, Tyndale was betrayed to the authorities, who tried and convicted him of heresy. On October 6, 1536, Tyndale was strangled and burned at the stake.”

“ Despite dying peacefully in his parish, his theological push for church reform and the translation of the Bible made him deeply controversial. Because his teachings heavily inspired later reformers like Jan Hus, the Council of Constance posthumously declared Wycliffe a heretic in 1415.Consequently, church officials had his bones exhumed in 1428—44 years after his death—and publicly burned. His ashes were thrown into the nearby River Swift.”

And that was 50 years before Martin Luther came along. And you know what fun happened then.

I had a heart attack 13 days after my covid vax (no prior symptoms, and an odd presentation, such that the ER didn't figure out what had happened until I had a second attack in the ER). I had a seizure and loss of consciousness 13 days after the booster. My cardiologist said, no more.

@Smilin Jack - sure! The death rate tanked after all the susceptible people died of it.

Why limit your focus to the ufo extravaganza? Mass communication has created an infinite variety of cults and cultisms. Humans haven't adapted to a world that is changing way too fast.

Forget the X Files, today is for the Man from U.N.C.L.E. Napoleon Solo is running in the Preakness ........ And WON paying $17.80 and a $107+ $2.00 exacta..Both Horses came out of the WOOD MEMORIAL a race not noted for producing Triple Crown race winners. .22.66 first ....quarter took front runners out, SOLO layed behind speed and took off at top of stretch. My wager never placed as INCREDIBOLT never went above 5-1 and my morning line was no bet unless 6-1 or better. (LUCKY saved for the Belmont) The horse(INCREDIBOLT) ran an uninspiring 5th and was done from Post #12 AFTER 22.66 .

The sexual innuendo of alien gropers and groomers is embodied in Unwanted Flucking Overtures.

No vaccine was ever created for the 1918 Spanish Flu. The Spanish Flu disappeared. Coincidence?

Covid mutated and each mutation made the virus less and less dangerous. It started off being a horrific and terrifying threat. It took over a year for the vaccines to hit the market. In that time span, Covid went from being a stop-the-world nightmare to being something akin to the flu. Or less than flu. I don't know if I could prove it, but my strong feeling is that the battle against Covid was fought and won (by our immune systems) long before the vaccines were on the market.

I've read or heard that the Black Death was caused by superstitions about cats. People thought that cats were Satanic, so they got rid of cats. And so the rats thrived and they brought the plague with them.

Some people think that religion is similar to superstition. I've actually found it to be a fantastic antidote to superstition. When you have a religion, it's easy to reject false ones.

When Jesus was walking on water, some of the disciples in the boat thought it was a ghost. That was their immediate reaction -- they went to superstition. And then they saw it was Jesus. Which had to be mind-boggling. Christians would then start referring to a holy ghost, or a holy spirit. Jesus humanized the spirit world and made us less afraid of the unknown.

Not as bad as a heart attack. Or two. But I didn't have a serious gout problem til after my second shot. Then it was like somebody threw a switch. Eat a burger. Be in excruciating pain for five days.

Saint Croix,

It started off being a horrifically and terrifyingly EXAGGERATED threat.

FIFY.
