"But blue is a color we associate with injury: Think of the mottled black and blue of a bruise. It is the color of authority and stereotypical masculinity..."

"... of depression, but also tranquility; of cleanliness; of cold; of winning first prize. And so we must ask: What is American Flag Blue?"

I'm reading "Did Trump pick the right blue for the Reflecting Pool? We asked a pool guy. Old Glory Blue? American Flag Blue? Let’s reflect on all the shades, while a federal judge mulls 'aesthetic injury' in the president’s latest decorating flourish" (WaPo).

It's a dark blue, we're told, not swimming-pool blue, which would be too light and bright, not the right somber blue. But it's Trump's blue, so somber — and flag-oriented — is also bad.

"Just because American Flag Blue looks good on a flag, it doesn’t mean it will necessarily look good slathered on a length of more than 2,000 feet, says Jill Morton, a professional color consultant. 'The context of a color is what matters,' says Morton. 'That dark blue, if it is that dark, oh man, that’s going to look very, very dismal.'"

Back before I retired from working in publishing and design (as a programmer/developer) we thought of blue as the ultimate dominate color for corporate presentation and advertising work. It’s a neutral color that doesn’t carry any great emotional sting. Soothing.

We are here in DC and walked by the Reflecting Pool construction yesterday.

Judging by my Democrat wife’s reaction, it is very very upsetting that Trump picked blue instead of black. She is an artist, so I guess that makes her an expert on color choices.

What else will Trump do to ruin this country?

wildswan చెప్పారు...

I used to work in DC and often ate my lunch in one of the parks by a fountain. It was so great to get that little breathing space - being with green plants and flowers near flowing water. It saddened me when I read of takeovers by dirty, filthy, insane people and drug dealers. But I used to think that somehow it was an inescapable result of something, somehow, it just happened in a city. I now know from seeing what Trump has done for DC that the mess was one more result of Dem party rule. Dems steal the money allocated for city needs. If we had a list of the properties DC Dem politicians own which was placed in relation to when they were elected, we'd see the reason for the dirty city.

There's something comical not just about this discussion, but about the fact that the people who do comedy for a living find nothing funny about it. There should be a SNL skit about the DNC snit about the color of water in a reflecting pool.......Yesterday in the NYT there was a lengthy investigative article about the awarding of the contract for the poor repair. This is bigger than Watergate.

Every architect and landscape designer is (or should be) familiar with the concept of “consulting the genius loci”. It’s a REFLECTING pool, not a swimming pool, not a fish pond, and not a wishing well. When one pauses around it from every perspective it should mirror the trees, the buildings, the memorials, the people, and the sky. Both functionally and aesthetically, the color should be black or at least a very very dark blue. That my professional (ret.) opinion.

Blue as the color of "stereotypical masculinity"? That's a stretch. Baby blue, the light shade, is associated with boy babies, but it's not very masculine. The darker, more saturated shades of blue (or red or any color) seem to be quite gender-neutral.

It's said that pink was once regarded as suitable for boy babies. Then it wasn't. Some people want to blame Hitler and his pink triangles for the change, but I suspect it was a more natural evolution, and something we can't blame on the Nazis.

Those with much time on their hands may want to explore William Gass's book "On Being Blue."

Getting colors right is hard and depends on the context. What looks good in a book looks terrible in real life. What looks good next to green trees can look terrible next to red rocks, etc. See the Contrast Effect of color perception:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrast_effect

"Flagship" buildings are designed in a studio and then tested with real materials and real colors in place. This means putting up a fake wall and window to see how it reflects off buildings and trees nearby. They sometimes have 2, 3, or 4 finalist options and decide only after seeing them in place.

When the Las Vegas Venetian was built, they struggled to decide on the color green for the bottom of the fake canal that runs through the mall. I heard that Sheldon Adelson painted it, filled it with water and was unhappy, then drained it, repainted it, and filled it again. He chose a murky realistic dark green; sort of the old duck poop and slime color of the DC Reflecting Pool.

I suspect that the painted Reflecting Pool will shift in appearance with the weather and angle, but blue should be dark blue (American Flag blue in that location), or it'll look like a swimming pool indeed.

narciso చెప్పారు...

Bruises aren't black or blue, they're purple. Seriously, do a Google image search and you won't see one bruise that is American Flag Blue or jet black. And I doubt that the author would go around criticizing purple things as reminding us of violence. (Unless Trump started dressing like Prince.)

loudogblog చెప్పారు...

Enigma చెప్పారు...

Water in pools appears blue because it's the wavelength of light that penetrates and reflects back. The same thing happens with blue eyes -- it's not the color blue it's the shadow from a clear iris when looking into darkness of the eyeball.

Painting water bodies anything other than blue will end up shifting to the natural shades of water (e.g., alpine clear blue, ocean deep blue, shoreline green and brown from runoff and plants). It's going to end up bluish or greenish or murky unless very shallow and processed.

No, it is a highly serious role in the packaging industry. I've worked with some of them and they often (but not always) have a good explanation for what color to select.

Michigan State devotes a lot of time to colors in their packaging curriculum

I'm more on the use end and how colors can sometimes affect how packages run on the packaging line. But I do talk to these folks sometimes.

Not to say the article doesn't sound like bullshit and that Jill Morton sounds like she suffers TDS. But she might be very sound if you wanted to know just which shade of red you want the grapics on your aspirin carton to be.

The naysayers should wait until the final surface coating is applied and the pool is filled. More than simple color wavelengths must be considered. Physicists and landscape architects know that a dark blue color of the pool walls is superior to the former medium gray color for maximizing reflection from the water's surface. A "color consultant" with a degree in fashion design or whatever almost certainly does not.

Biff చెప్పారు...

I don't have a particular opinion about the color of the reflecting pool. I expect that it is hard for a layman to judge before the completed pool is filled with water. I also expect that the appearance of the pool will change significantly depending on the weather.

What I do know is that the same color choice would be greeted by the critics with rapture if it were the choice of an Obama or a Biden.

Hassayamper చెప్పారు...

it is hard for a layman to judge before the completed pool is filled with water

The minimalist, detached narrative uses these stagnant, luxurious pools to mirror the characters' absolute moral apathy, numbness, and emotional emptiness.“

A physicist is the last person I'd ask about color coordination in public buildings or art. The key technical people are perception scientists (a serious branch of psychology), as humans see what humans want to see and the brain is a creative instrument as much as a measuring device. A landscape architect and a color consultant are likely the same person with a different label.
