The judgy comments are mostly resentful of Sedaris's wealth and his choice to spend what he has on art and on chairs that seem as if they might be uncomfortable.
And here's Sedaris's new collection of essays: "The Land and Its People" (commission earned). It came out 5 days ago. I've read it and will read it again and again. I love David Sedaris's voice and his books are, by far, my favorite book to listen to while falling asleep. But this new book won't work for that. It's got loud, aggressive clapping/percussion between the essays.

Writing talent aside: Did the person who wrote this article also lick his feet ? Just curious. Quite the tongue bath.
"It's got loud, aggressive clapping/percussion between the essays."
That's to wake you up, in case you're listening while driving.
I mean I don't care what David Sedaris spends his money on, it would appear that he has earned it. But really, what was the purpose of this treacly article? It seems as if it was written to inspire the average reader's criticism of such an ostentatious catalog of 'All Things Wonderfully Sedaris', so that he would then have something to write about.

The Democrat party was founded on protecting slavery and nothing has changed.
A sizeable portion of the human race are locusts who see things that other people have built and would rather take that than build their own. They are lazy and they just want to force other people to build them things.
They were slave owners in the south who made money off the work of others.
Socialism is just another form of exploitation of the people that work and build by lazy reductive violent shitheads.
The violent lazy reductive shitheads are just called Democrats now.
Not shocking that the NYT comments are a bunch of lazy barbarians who think Sedaris is too rich and should give them his stuff.
That less noise on the Upper East Side only works if you own the top two stories of a high rise......There are apparently big bucks to be made writing wry essays. Eat your heart out Fran Leibowitz. She gave up too soon.....The article says he bought the two floors in installments and paid, in total, five million dollars. My guess is that he's made more from this investment than from all his writings. The post Mamdami appreciation will probably be considerably less though.
…the ding dongs think this is still the old Democrat party. Ding dongs…
Yeah, i hate music in audiobook.
Sedaris is one person whose reading of his books is x4 better than just reading them.
RCO: I guess I'm going to find out. Downloaded the audiobook this morning for my next road trip.
I have one of his books. Sedaris is like Jeremy Clarkson, his voice occupies the written words.
The link is to an archive.is version of the article. It doesn't show the chairs, which I think look comfortable. (I looked at the NYT article just to see the chairs.)
My biggest question from the article is, why can't you have two kitchens in a combined apartment?
A Venn diagram of New York Times subscribers and Bluesky denizens would have significant overlap. Just sayin'.
Seven homes? That would definitely make Comrade Bernie Sanders jealous. Comrade Zohran Mamdani's reaction would probably be like something out of Doctor Zhivago.
Alas, your link has only 1 comment. Did the NYT delete them?

It would be a circle.
The Dem party consists of the rich, and the over produced well-educated who expect much more than they currently get. The Dem elite have to thread this needle, not sure they can keep doing so.
"and the over produced well-educated"
Credentialed, maybe. Educated? Not so much.
Sedaris is self-depricating first, and the humor rises from that. His sister Amy Sedaris is hilarious in a different way. They are actually respectable of other people and not at all hectoring nor politically correct. I find them refreshing.
I've heard Sedaris a few times on NPR and his whole schtick seems to be "I hate white Christians, and especially Americans and men." What am I missing?

It's not a link to the NYT, it's a link to archive.is.
Here's a gift link.
my favorite book to listen to while falling asleep
I think that's meant as a compliment. But I'm not sure I'd ever say to an author "Your books are great for putting me to sleep"
“ The link is to an archive.is version of the article. It doesn't show the chairs, which I think look comfortable. ”
It’s the last day of the month and I have used all 10 of my gift links. I’ll put in a better link tomorrow.
"It's not a link to the NYT, it's a link to archive.is. Here's a gift link."
Thanks, Mary Beth. I've put that link in the post.
So the link is good now.

My son Chris did say it to him directly.
Instead of being "Judgemental" about a book author living in several zillion dollar homes, they should be asking themselves "What kind of political/economic system allows this sort of thing to happen?"
As to two apartments as one having two kitchens: many years ago, I was the private chef for Ross Johnson (RJR Nabsico fame) and his nice trophy wife, Susan. Once she took me down a hallway to show me photos of Ross and her with various US presidents. She told me she wasn't married to Ross at the time. She explained she had her image photoshopped in (not true photoshop as that wasn't invented at the time). Anyway, they had the entire top floor of a condo on Jupiter Island, with two kitchens, only one in use by me. The night I catered for them there were 10 guests and many spend the night. When the guests and the Johnsons woke up the next morning, they found their valuables (jewelry and cash and more) had been stolen. They were the victim of a thief that became known as Spider-Man as he scaled the outside of the condo and entered through unlocked patio doors. Ross was kind to me and certainly no barbarian at the gate.
