Which U.S. Presidents have been called "The Antichrist"?

I wondered, on seeing the Wired article "Staunch Trump Supporters Are Now Asking if He’s the Antichrist/The Iran war and a series of social media posts, including one depicting Trump as Jesus Christ, have some conservative commentators and fans suspecting the president may be the antichrist."

Of course, it's a long tradition in American discourse. If I can trust Grok, it goes back at least to FDR.

I remember why the topic came up in 2011. I blogged about it in "Obama does a great job reacting to a heckler who calls him the Antichrist" ("Obama has the presence of mind to say — responding to the heckled 'Jesus Christ is God, Barack Obama is the Antichrist!' — 'I agree. Jesus Christ is the Lord. I believe in that'").

There's also Ronald Reagan. A man who broke into his home in 1990 told Secret Service agents that Reagan was the Antichrist and "he must be killed and I must kill him." From the contemporaneous NYT article: "Mr. Gordon later told a Los Angeles police officer that he had gone to the estate to strangle Mr. Reagan. But he also said that if he could have talked to the former President privately, he would have simply shaken his hand and told him to help the homeless."

And then people said that electing JFK was like electing the Antichrist. Because he was Catholic.

It's always end times in America.

Meanwhile, in Russia, in the 19th Century, Tolstoy had the Antichrist in the second sentence of "War and Peace":
"Well, Prince, so Genoa and Lucca are now just family estates of the Buonapartes. But I warn you, if you don't tell me that this means war, if you still try to defend the infamies and horrors perpetrated by that Antichrist — I really believe he is Antichrist — I will have nothing more to do with you and you are no longer my friend, no longer my 'faithful slave,' as you call yourself!"

Bill O’Reilly just put Pope Leo on the spot with the one question no one in the media will ask him.

And with it, he completely exposed the Pope’s double standard in the feud with President Trump.

O’REILLY: “I could mediate a settlement between the Pope and Donald Trump, I could do it.”

“But in such a mediation I would have to ask his holiness very frankly…you had 30,000 people gunned down in Iran just a few weeks ago, we heard nothing from the Vatican on that at all.”

“NOTHING!”

“You have a terror, a government, close to a nuclear weapon.”

“Is it acceptable for the Catholic church to look away from that?”

“As you know, I wrote Confronting Evil, and the theme of the book is that these heinous individuals, they gain power by people looking away.”

“By people not wanting to pay the price, as you put it, for gasoline or food.”

“That’s how they get power.”

“How would you think that Pope Leo would answer that question? Very simple question.”

“Is the Catholic church okay with the mullahs having a nuclear weapon?”

“Your holiness, yes or no?”

“I’m a Catholic, I’d like to know the answer.”

“The Pope will never address that.”

“And that frustrates Donald Trump because the Pope is also an open border guy.”

Napoleon being the antichrist strikes us as humorous today. But Napoleon really was a power-mad freak who loved war and was no way a Christian in any way. Invading Russia was just the natural next step in his desire to control all of Europe. Almost of the land West of the Rhine had been directly annexed to France. And Bonaparts had been placed on almost every throne under his control.

Forturnately, the Czar rescued Europe.

Back in the heyday of European Protestantism, plenty of Popes were called the 'Antichrist.' This is because real Popes were routinely corrupt Italians who engaged in sex scandals and business scandals and more -- and then claimed to be the authoritative voice of God on Earth. If you were in Germany, France, or England, why accept the words of an Italian for anything? JFK was thereby suspect for having dual loyalties to Uncle Sam and Uncle Pope.

Numerologists, astrologers, zealots and the like always seek mystical connections and secret, special knowledge. They are supernatural freelancers who don't comply with state religions, and can either call others or be called 'Antichirst.' As such, I'd bet every President has been described this way.

Foiled assassins believed Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama was the antichrist. There was even speculation that George HW Bush's 'New World Order' was evil in Biblical terms (something similar was thought of Henry Kissinger). AI tells me that there were people who thought every modern president was the antichrist -- with the exception of Gerald Ford. Pressed with another prompt, it says that Jimmy Carter wasn't 'widely considered' to be the antichrist. Iran war could slow global growth to weakest since pandemic, IMF warns ~ WSJ

‘Expansion of global economy would fall to 2.5% in an ‘adverse scenario’ of persistent $100-per-barrel oil’

In my opinion markets are very complacent about the risks here. Back oil contracts are at about $80, equity markets are flat or up since the US & Israel launched an unwinnable war. We all apply motivated thinking, hoping that somehow this is going to blow over in time for our summer holidays, but there are many reasons to be doubtful.

1. Iran controls the Straits, and any US blockade will reduce the supply of oil

2. Fertilizer is in short supply just when it's needed in the Northern hemisphere planting season

3. As noted above—Trump is in dire trouble just when the mid-terms are on the horizon -- at which point his Presidency will likely be blocked at every side (which might be a good thing).

4. All 13 US bases in the Gulf are unusable

5. Israel, who started this war, has every incentive to continue.

6. Gulf states might well decide to throw their lot in with Iran, rather than the US. Who haven't exactly helped their economies recently.Even if the war ends tonite the chance of a worldwide recession is high. If the war goes on for another year we'll be in 1929 territory. Of course no-one is planning for this eventuality -- we all assume tomorrow will be the same as today. That's human nature — react, don't plan.

Wired = politics for dummies (Liberal/left version).

When that magazine was printed on paper some 30 years ago, and 100 pages thick or more, and filled with interesting articles on technology, it was well worth the subscription price and became mandatory cover-to-cover reading for me every month. Even the advertising, and there was plenty, was in line with my interests.

One particularly memorable article was by the great Neal Stephenson in the mid-1990's, and ran to something like 20 lavishly illustrated pages about the longest undersea cable that had ever been laid, some 17,000 miles long. A true classic. The first time I ever heard of the Burning Man festival was in their pages around the same time, when a couple of thousand people gathered in the Nevada desert, some of them flying private airplanes onto the playa and shooting off machine guns and grenade launchers.

Reading the big-government bootlickers of Wired these days, and contrasting my disdain and outright hatred for everything in it with the excitement I felt when reading it 30 years ago, makes me mourn a world that now seems as lost as Ancient Rome.

Inga, as a loyal leftist cultist, is glad Trump is shedding support.
Moral principled people stand by righteous missions.

Leftists lie and reveal their true selves. Nothing new.
All very yawn inducing.

Napoleon died a son of Mother Church, and presumably sits with the righteous in Heaven.

"Why is this Pope from Chicago an instrument of the far-left Chicago Democrat machine?"

What did you think would happen? He's a White Sox fan, too.

Does Pope Leo get his nose out of joint about all those demonstrators (estimated at 30,000+) that the Irani regime killed? If so, he should chew that bone for a while. If not, why not?

I saw that picture of Napoleon crowning himself emperor. The Pope looks like a grumpy mother-in-law at a wedding of two ne'er do wells.

It's fascinating to see what social media reveals about a person before they become the Pope.

Before he became Pope Leo XIV, Cardinal Robert Prevost was on Twitter trashing Trump, criticizing Vance, calling for open borders, promoting COVID vaccines, endorsing stricter gun control, and tweeting after George Floyd:

"We need to hear more from leaders in the Church, to reject racism and seek justice."

The account was deleted the day he was elected.

endorsing stricter gun control

The Swiss Guards have a very nicely equipped armory in the Vatican, with everything from 400-year-old halberds, swords, and blunderbusses to SIG 550 & 552 assault rifles, B&T APC9 and APC556 PDWs, and Glock 19 and 26 pistols with red dot optics and suppressors.

I have no respect at all for politicians who think their bodyguards should be allowed weapons that are forbidden to the rest of us. I don't buy the argument that they need it because they are at higher risk of attack, or that they deserve it for their public service.

Is a senator or big-city mayor swanning around town in a chauffeured limousine with a couple of burly policemen really at greater risk of being attacked than a night-shift nurse going to her car in a poorly lit garage at 3 am in the same city? Is the politician doing a greater public service than she is, between working constantly to steal our money and strip us of our rights ands get his mitts into the public purse? To ask the question is to answer it.

I'd support a Constitutional amendment forcing politicians and other government scum at every level to have to follow the exact same gun laws they impose on everyone else.

I was in Chapel Hill this morning and overheard an elderly woman say to her husband about a mass killing in Africa, "They must have been influenced by Trump."
I held my tongue.

Somebody once commented that the relative cultural levels around Europe could be seen in the varying perceptions of Napoleon: in Germany and Italy as a liberator, in Spain as a tyrant, and in Russia as the arch-fiend.
