"This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech that was supposed to bring together members of both parties with members of the press. And in a certain way it did..."

"I saw a room that was totally unified. It was in one way very beautiful — a very beautiful thing to see."

Said President Trump, in an impromptu press conference at the White House, 2 hours after the incident at the Correspondents' Dinner.

I hope that shared experience brings people together. Perhaps there will be a reset and love will steer the stars: "In light of this evening's events, I ask that all Americans recommit with their hearts to resolving our differences peacefully. We have to resolve our differences. You had Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives in that room — a big crowd, record-setting crowd. There was a tremendous amount of love and coming together." Come together, right now, over me.

Trump saw the opportunity to promote his ballroom: "We looked at all of the conditions that took place tonight. It's not a particularly secure building. I didn't want to say this, but this is why we have to have all of the attributes of what we're planning at the White House. It's actually a larger room and it's much more secure. It's got drone-proof and bulletproof glass. We need the ballroom."

Trump framed the incident as an assassination attempt: "This is not the first time in the past couple of years that our republic has been attacked by a would-be assassin. In Butler, Pennsylvania, less than two years ago — you all know that story. And in Palm Beach, Florida, a few months after that, we came close again. We had some great work done by law enforcement."

Trump expressed pride in himself as the target of multiple assassination attempts. Asked "Why do you think this keeps happening to you?," he said "I've studied assassinations. The most impactful people, the people that do the most, are the ones they go after. Abraham Lincoln, the big names. I hate to say I'm honored by that, but we've done a lot. We've changed this country. There are a lot of people that are not happy about that."

The problem with the media is they think freedom of the press is synonymous with freedom of speech. Outside of opinion pieces, freedom of the press is not a constitutional right to lie and fabricate facts while relaying information. Individuals can lie all they want, but the “press” is supposed to be a check on government actions using verifiable facts and timelines. The press should be censured (punished) when it misbehaves. They don’t agree with that.

Allen shot randomly outside and he would have done the same inside. He would certainly have killed some lefty media figures. Think about it. Lefty media figures such as Hasan Piker have been urging people to kill [political opponents] and now we have some one ready to step into a room mainly full of lefty media figures and their wives, and shoot, hoping to hit government officials scattered among the media. Now lefty lives don't count either. When violence takes over, death stops discriminating.

Of course you do. You voted for Obama who started all of this.

At least with the Clintons there was some sort of idea that we all lived in the same country and had the same values. They were corrupt sociopathic pieces of shit that sold the country out for campaign contributions, but they at least lived with the idea that the United States was a country with fellow countrymen in it.

But Obama has turned Washington DC and the Democrat party into a purely fascist enterprise that will kill and persecute anyone that opposes them.

Trump and Ann are too nice/cowardly. They are going to get more people killed. Particularly children who are being indoctrinated into the cause.

There is no coming together Ann. Over half the democrat party thinks it is justifiable to kill Trump.

You do not reconcile that. You treat it like cancer. If cancer wins we die. Period.

Trump is a guy who knows how to maintain an even strain. I never thought the guy had real balls. I always thought he was just a spoiled big mouth. Rich kid. But it's obvious he is a true Mensch.

Notice how he did not take the opportunity to whine and complain and make strawman arguments in order to make political points to fellow travelers. Can you imagine what Kamala Harris would have said in the same situation? She'd be talking about locking down the whole country and confiscating everyone's weapons.

I think one of the things that he realizes is that these attempts on his life are only giving him more and more strength and political capital. I can imagine that the irgc and their their Mullet puppets In turbans wearing Clark Kent glasses Will have taken notice that this guy isn't afraid of being assassinated then for sure he isn't afraid of them either. In fact, they are probably already calculating that. This incident gives him more freedom to do whatever nasty business he needs to close the deal.

I don't think Trump is cowardly. I watched it and then sent quotes out to friends with jobs -- all I can manage now is tone, but that matters.

This is a guy who went from almost being killed and then body-slammed out of a crappy hotel ballroom with his very reasonably traumatized wife, to calling the shot officer, to doing a brilliant off-the-cuff presser before a hostile audience less than an hour later.

Leaders need different skill sets than ordinary people. Trump was a honey badger with a sense of appropriately muted humor; actual respect for police and our values, and even empathy that trumped his duller media critics while still sincerely acknowledging what they had all experienced -- as Americans together.

What do they do now? They can do nothing without looking churlish. They will still do it. He did not.

It does not take a security expert to unravel the layers of failure that happened at a Washington, D.C. hotel on Saturday night. Major blunders..How on earth could someone with a disassembled long gun check into a room at a hotel where the president was going to speak? I can answer that said a hotel goer. Nobody even looked at my luggage on Friday afternoon. Worse, my colleague arrived on Saturday at 5 p.m. Nobody looked at his luggage either: No magnometers, no hand checks, no I.D. checks. Nothing. How on earth could that person get downstairs and assemble a long gun? I can answer that too. guest said. I moved up and down from Floor 10 all day. Nobody ever stopped me and asked me anything. I have never shown my I.D., except to the clerk who checked me in; I have never been searched or frisked when I checked in, or moved in and out of the hotel. To get down from my room to the dinner, I simply flashed my ticket. It could have been a photocopy. The only time I went past a checkpoint was at the same magnetometers that Cole Allen, 31, sprinted past with his gun.Another colleague was outside; I texted them a copy of their ticket. That allowed them to get into the hotel as far as those same magnetometers, entirely unchecked. How on earth could that be considered safe? Big security failures Secret Service needs better systems.
