Said the 77-year-old French Vogue editor Joan Juliet Buck, quoted in "Why Fashion Suddenly Loves Older Women/Representation of women of a certain age has never been higher. What’s going on?" (NYT).
The article is by Vanessa Friedman, who continues: "Authenticity is, of course, one of the current buzzwords not just in fashion, but in culture generally. It’s a reflection of the fear that individual style has been lost to the algorithm.... It’s not just influencers and celebrities who have become the vehicles for this version of ageless sameness. It’s political figures, too.... As many MAGA women have embraced the plumped and smoothed 'Mar-a-Lago face,' it has become an expression of a larger social swing toward exaggerated norms and old-fashioned patriarchal gender roles rather than simply a cosmetic fad."

This is what's been going on for a long time.

"Said the 77-year-old French Vogue editor..."
Hmmm real mystery here.
Maybe I just travel in the wrong circles, but I have no idea what "Mar-a-Lago face' is.
Why do these people think mentioning Mar-a-Lago implies ugliness? I just saw some photos from an event at the place held over the weekend, and everyone looked great.
One markets to the groups with money, or one goes out of business. Duh.
Scanning the photos, I immediately thought 'yeah, but not those older women'. Ugh, I would have thought the NYT would have tried to make a better point. They must be from a recognized NYC social circle. Not that I find the überBotox Frau crowd any better, but at least they're dressed to the nines and doing it to look good.
The people who love corruption and fraud hate guys like that…
Baby boomers were an unusually dominant influential generational cohort. Now that we are being made redundant and irrelevant by age, a few bitter clingers are hawking their new brand of beauty and wisdom that smacks of desperation.

Yeah, most of them are homely. But, that is the nature of the fashion modeling beast, and perhaps you were expecting beautiful ones - even pretty ones. Those are few and far between for some reason.
There are plenty of pretty/beautiful older women out there. I've long loved them - it's just gotten more and more age-appropriate for me...
The Vogue lady is more insightful and on target than the Times woman, who sees things in ideological terms, rather than recognize the human side of things.
" I have no idea what "Mar-a-Lago face' is.".
Me either, James. But one must, just must, toss a jab at Trump into virtually any and every NYT article.... boring... predictable.... lazy.
"Mar-a-Lago face' is"
The Pam Bondi and Kristi Noem look is my guess
"Why fashion loves older women."
Because there are more of them than ever before, they have money, and they are willing to spend it.
.. Why Fashion Suddenly Loves Older Women/Representation of women of a certain age has never been higher...
a few years back, it was morbidly obese models, showing that disgusting lumps of lard could (try to) sell things too..
then, a year or so ago, it was men in skirts (chix with dicks),
showing that Even the mentally ill should be represented too.
NOW, it's old ladies..
showing other old ladies that THEY are important too;
not just for supporting the right causes, but because they themselves are a "cause"
10 “Mar-a-Lago” Face Transformations That Left People Utterly Stunned

Old fashioned feminine gender roles: RAAT.
A woman who feels conformable with herself tends to be older but not necessarily, and the men who love them.
“ I think we’re like old stone houses.”
Cold and drafty, with bats in the belfry.
I could have told you that whatever the fashion was, it would somehow be a rebellion against Trump supporters.
This is a nice complementary piece that dovetails neatly with Althouse's topic.
Older Women Are in Demand by Younger Men ~ NYT
'What a shift in the dating preferences of younger men reveals about our changing norms.'

"expression of a larger social swing toward exaggerated norms and old-fashioned patriarchal gender roles rather than simply a cosmetic fad."
I don't have the slightest idea what this hodge-podge of Leftwing jargon means. I suppose the author thinks she's being "smart".
A woman who's more feminine than feminine?
That said, there are more roles in life than natural gender roles: a husband and wife, a father and mother.
It's not that fashion suddenly loves older women. They know that they can't compete with the young, female influencers on the internet.

I know this is a line from a bluesman, but none of the AI tools can find it. CC, JSM
Sure man, old people are now hotter so go horn dog them and dump your 21year old date. Sounds like a plan.
Speaking of versions of ageless sameness, in the large photo that is labeled "25 headshots of women 40 and older who appeared on the fall 2026 runways" there are repeaters. Couldn't they tell them apart?
Enlarged, it's like a vision of Satan's HR department.
I rest my case.
..Older Women Are in Demand by Younger Men..
which would be ANOTHER one of those graphs, showing that interest in dating older women has increased A HUNDRED PERCENT!
from 0.000001 all the way to 0.000002
Some women choose the Mar-a-Lago face, others - the Ozempic face. And yet others choose to stay authentic.
The Mar-a-Lago face and the Ozempic face are the two sides of the same coin, both result in a corrected face that looks similar to others doing the same thing. Both looks are extreme, artificial and highly recognizable. All these women choose to conform to a uniform beauty standard. It's just that their faces show us who they vote for.
Ref older woman/younger man: Since most of us (especially the college-educated crowd) have parents 40 years older than us, we are used to dealing with people "only" 20 years older as peers. The ick factor of 'you could be my parent' is thus absent. Plus there's the general informality of society nowadays. You're not going to call anyone maam or sir. So if you're already on a first name basis, why not screw? We don't really know how to classify people 20 years older, in bed or at work. CC, JSM
Ref Ozempic face: I have street conundrums that are kind of like Andy Cohen quiz games. Like "Thrifty Rich Guy, or Sleeps in a Ditch Guy?" (because rich old dudes wear their clothes down to rags - that's how they got rich). Lately I added "Ozempic, or Meth Chick?" CC, JSM
What's the difference between an anorectic 18-year old trophy and a 69-year old one? Number of divorces?
stunned: and what are your special qualities, discipline, and accomplishments, nasty?
John mosby, I think it’s safe to say that Demi Moore is an Ozempic Chick.
My special quality is not keeping my head in the sand. Oh, and not taking things personally, highly recommended. Cheerio, Tina.
Most men and women are looking for someone to share a life and experiences with, to raise a family together, to grow [old] together.
The substance was autobiographical

I am pleased to know that you are all about older women. It's great for me, because I have long loved younger women. If I want to feel an arthritic thigh, all I have to do is put my hand in my pocket. But I reject the term "age-appropriate". It smacks of some sort of sexual Miss Manners, and defies our animal nature.
@ Little Excursion - The weekly stories of an attractive young teacher getting busted banging her underage students support this thesis.
Tina Trent said "What's the difference between an anorectic 18-year old trophy and a 69-year old one?" Age. The sentence, as written, leads me to presume they are both trophies and both on the thin side. :)
Then there's 67 year old Madonna wearing teeny bop couture still trying to be a "Virgin".
