The Trump-as-Jesus meme rages on.

These 2 gems came up on my for-you feed on TikTok today. Don't watch if you're actually appalled by this sort of thing. Watch if you think it can be funny/intriguing/worth keeping track of:

@systaim3 One image. And everything spirals. Donald Trump portrayed as Jesus. Generated by AI. Posted on Truth Social. Then suddenly erased. But deletion doesn’t erase impact. The reaction is immediate. Religious outrage. Accusations of blasphemy. A symbolic line has been crossed. Then comes the explanation. Not Jesus, he says. A doctor. “I heal people. I heal people a lot.” The shift is almost surreal. From messiah to medic. From icon to narrative adjustment. In this moment, the image stops being an image. It becomes a tool. A strategy. A performance. Because today, images don’t need to be true. They need to circulate. Power no longer controls reality. It controls perception. And AI accelerates everything. Who creates the image? Who controls the meaning? Who decides what we see? The post is gone. The story remains. ⸻ #DonaldTrump #AIart #ArtificialIntelligence #PostTruth #MediaManipulation ♬ son original - Systaime

@thedailydrag Trump’s spiritual advisor said he is just like jesus. #democrats #uspolitics #jesus #republicans #whitehouse ♬ The Little Drummer Boy - 1965 Version - The Harry Simeone Chorale

AND: You may wonder if I'm being inconsistent with what I said yesterday, in "Why do people read this illustration to represent Trump depicted as Jesus rather than Trump with the miraculous power of the laying on of hands?" That was about the image Trump shared, which I didn't think was specific enough that it was necessarily Trump as Jesus. It showed the power of prayer and the laying on of hands. It definitely combined religion and politics. But it was not squarely Trump = Jesus. The videos I've embedded above were not shared by Trump. I don't know who created them or why, just that TikTok saw fit to serve them up to me, but from my point of view, this shows what happens when you put the idea out there. Everyone's excited about portraying — or seeming to portray — Trump as Jesus? Then some people are going to portray Trump as Jesusly as possible.

So they can get fucked.

Instead of squabbling with the Catholic Church, Trump must focus on what they have in common, such as a legacy of protecting pedophiles.

Oh I think so. If Trump comes out smelling like a rose in Iran, Venezuela, and perhaps now Cuba.. and oil prices fall back to moderate levels, as they always do... and employment and the stock market continue to rise... and he ekes out a victory in the midterm elections... oh me oh my, about 20 percent of my fellow citizens are going to Completely. Lose. Their. Shit.

It will be something to savor. I hope they are so demoralized and depressed and fearful that they flee to Canada and Europe by the tens of millions. We'll replace them with white South Africans and everyone will be much happier in the end.

If they seriously attempt a revolution, well, we can speedily deal with that, and take out some trash that has been festering and fermenting for a couple of generations. Nasty business, but again... in the end, everyone (well, the foreordained victors, anyway) will be happier.

I assume Trump's remarks will provide a boost to Meloni's popularity inside Italy. It is impossible to know what is in her mind. However, it is clear where the direction of public opinion inside Italy stands -- not with Trump or the current government of Israel.

1. The implicit "Trump as Jesus" post by Trump was transparently Trump as Jesus if one has seen the source art. The look and feel is near identical -- it is not a close call.

2. Trump is an echo of Henry VIII. Henry was a playboy and had many wives. He rejected the Pope, set himself up as the head of the Church of England, and burned down the Catholic monasteries. Trump's character and logic is similar, but he's "burning down the Democratic Party and NGOs."

Trump looks like Robert Plant!

For the longest time here, I've repeatedly urged Althouse to adopt a "Trump is like Jesus" tag in response to various posts about Trump, usually when he was being subject to what I believed then was actual persecution, now robustly documented.

Althouse rarely if ever responded to my suggestion. I have to admit half the fun of repeatedly demanding something like that from her was to rankle our gracious hostess with Trumpian-level crudity.

I did make clear, however, the "like" in the "is like" formulation was by analogy in Trump suffering the malice of his powerful tormentors just as Jesus suffered his.

That comparison disjoins, of course, if you compare the virtue of Trump and Jesus, the men themselves.

I do believe Trump has become more virtuous, however, particularly since the assassination attempt.

Most telling is the fact that leaders of both parties have depicted recent leaders as godlike figures. Although the Trump version is more tounge in cheek and the Obama version more along the "help us Obiwan" line it shows the need for someone to 'fix the fucking thing. Its broken.'

Or just adhere to the Elon Musk/Slim Pickens version. "It'sgoing to be lit! Yeehaw!"

We only have a couple more years of the full Trump Show before he’s gone. At least, I think that’s all we’ve got.

I’ll miss The Show. Trump is Jesus of “The Power of Positive Thinking.” He’s leading us into the Age of Abundance, the Singularity. “Power of Positive Thinking” is very closely aligned with Andreessen’s “Techno-Optimist Manifesto.”

Yes, Trump is a massively transformational figure in American history. Throw off the chains of doubt and hesitance!! Stop over-thinking everything and act! Free yourself for a world of unimaginable wealth and freedom!

If I've answered in the past, I'm sure it was to say what I'm saying now. I don't like tag proliferation, so when I have a good somewhat specific tag — in this case, "Trump and religion" — I resist creating a more specific one.

I'm still wary of Blogger putting a cap on the number of tags. Years ago, I hit a cap and couldn't create new tags at all. Fortunately, that changed, but I don't know whether the change was just raising the cap, so I've got to be cautious.

How many tags do I have? I don't know! Thousands.

I do give MSCOW some credit for not cutting away from these pressers, the way they do with Trump. CC, JSM

Jesus...Doctor...helper of any kind....whatever the polar opposite of any of these are is what Trump is. He is truly a cancerous human being, a truly evil person, a sociopath wounded terminally by his abusive father, which he now is taking out on humankind.

Anyone who believes he is doing anything for the benefit of anyone is hypnotized. MAGA is the Manson Family writ large. Those who aid Trump in his atrocious stumblebum shitting on the world are manifold, and they are, as he is, enemies of humankind.

Ann Althouse કહ્યું...

I resist creating a new tag if it isn't going to be useful. If the usefulness is retrospective, at whatever point you perceive the usefulness, an issue is how hard will it be to add to old posts by searching the archive. If the new tag is, say, a person's name, it's relatively easy to search the archive for the name and add it to old posts. If it's more conceptual, what are the search terms.

If you want a "Trump is like Jesus" post, why don't you search the archive and give me a list of links where the tag belongs.

I remember old posts about, say, Trump at his desk with Jesus looming over him. That wouldn't get "Trump is like Jesus," so you might get started on this project and then see that the tag should be "Trump and Jesus" or something like that.

Or a better tag might be something like "politician likened to Jesus" and include all the times Obama was called the Messiah.

It's complicated. But go ahead and do the work and report back. Not as "fun" as imagining you're "rankling" me when you're trying to assign work to me.

I've been looking for sample images but haven't found them online. Everything I saw was either art prints on walls or in paper books from the pre-Web era. They were products of the (ingrown) "Christian publishing" niche market. There may be a lack of interest today, or an effort to downplay the 1950 vibe.

Later Christian art (by the 1980s) included at least token non-white people per Carter-era Affirmative Action (proto-DEI) programs. This also followed "red and yellow black and white, all are precious in his sight" Christian thinking of that period. Newer art would have at least one Asian and one black person.

I would like to understand how this genre is so triggering, that it reduces some of our most loyal Progressive commenters to a sputtering, spittle-flecked rage, as we see above. We have all witnessed the 'Walmart smell' level of contempt for people that could be pigeonholed conveniently into blue-collar, trailer-livin', low-income hillbillies, bitterly clinging to their religion and guns. That part is AOK. 'Cuz it came from the lightbringer, the other President that got the halo - on the magazine covers. Therefore anybody can say it.

But somebody creates a troll in the genre of Christian art, and suddenly its 'OMiGod, they're calling him Jesus !' when the President tweets it. My guess is, a vanishingly small sliver of Americans actually think of Trump as a Jesus-type savior. My guess is, a very very large slice of Americans think of Trump as an imperfect and flawed person with a colorful past, but not an unsuccessful one.

A relatively small sliver screams out 'cult' and calls Trump supporters 'cultists', sometimes shrieking it out like one might, if one were a cultist, themselves.

It sure seems odd that the demographic least likely to have strongly-held religious views, are so triggered by something they say they don't believe in. And the ones that are religious either aren't bothered, or think the picture is stupid, and say so, and then go back to whatever it was they were doing.

Why the triggering? I guess because the extremists are disappointed at the lack of extreme reactions, maybe?

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ કહ્યું...

The Pope is now the most important American on the world scene -- Trump just cannot stomach it.

You don’t even need to appeal to religion. It’s about decency in the face of gangsterism. The Pope's intervention and Trump's floundering has shone a spotlight (if it was even needed) of the moral vacuum Trump and his immediate circle live and operate in.

The degree to which Trump's actions are self-sabotaging in this confrontation is obvious to any normal sane person. This speaks heavily to Trump's psychological and cognitive decline which brings his narcissism to the fore.

Trump believes everyone hangs on his every word because he surrounds himself with sycophants. The tenants of Faith and belief do not bend to peoples egos.

I say let him continue. Trumps actions are self harming and only serve to accelerate the rate at which America swings to a political position that will remove him from office and allow Americans to rebuild society and world standing.

Yeah right. The Popes are the biggest gangsters of all time. Take it from us secular Italians, who invented gangsterism. We took away all his land and guns, and he still has the world's most remunerative protection racket. Really have to admire him in a twisted way. CC, JSM

Aggie, it's all easily explained: The Left don't actually believe the things they profess. So if they can ridicule ACB with "the dogma is strong in this one," they do. Then they will do a 180 and call out to ACB's co-believers: "look, look, Trump's committing sacrilege!"

Even the mullah regime doesn't really believe in respecting prophets: the Iranian embassy to Tajikistan just posted this AI of Jesus knocking Trump's block off:

https://x.com/IRANinTJ/status/2044138040650805495?s=20

Even though Shiites have much looser rules about figurative art (to include pictures and films of Moe himself), this one clearly doesn't hold JC (aka Hazerat Issa) in proper respect. CC, JSM

This tiptoes around the 800 lb gorilla in the room -- Trump's rhetoric has been utterly deranged and rash ever since he launched his war with Iran War. Anecdotally, his behavior has disgusted nearly everyone, with the exception of the ~30% of Americans who will support him no matter what.

"Pope Leo is weak on crime" isn't something that needs to be analyzed too deeply; it's the sign of a deranged and desperate man trying to insult his way into making his presidency domestically influential again. ie what he did with the tabloids in the 90s as he was bankrupting his casino. He won't lose Catholics who hated Francis and loved culture warriors. But he will lose Catholic moderates and won't win anyone new.

Expect to see more of this behavior after the midterms. The stuff about Pope Leo will be sane compared to other things he will likely say over the next ~3 years.
