"The shift to drilling holes in fuel tanks comes as an old method of stealing gas has faded: siphoning...."

"Most newer vehicles have narrow, curved filler necks leading to the gas tank, making it difficult to force a tube inside. Some vehicles also have internal flappers or baffles to thwart siphoning. And anti-pollution regulations mean fuel systems are often better sealed. Gas thefts of all kinds tend to follow pump prices...."

From "As fuel prices rise, a new technique of gas theft is spreading/With simple tools, thieves are 'drilling and draining' fuel from vehicles, leaving drivers with costly repair bills" (WaPo).

I don't like that phrase "As fuel prices rise," which seems to assume the rising trend will continue. Right now, I'm seeing this:

Think of it as one more desperate gasp from a dying regime... The mainstream media regime.

Fuel prices now are almost as high as they were during the Fraudulently Installed Crook Biden years.

Good thing the Pro-Crime democratic left - universally de-funded the police. Yay gas theft!

It makes me laugh how tolerant the Tucker-Maddow left are of Theocracy. As long as its "Islamic Theocracy" the Neo-Nazis are all good with it.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

Corporate Media calling a downward trend 6 days out of last 7 days “rising” is so on-brand for them! One wonders if they ever report anything straight.

There is a 9mm solution to most problems, but sadly we are discouraged from using it. Thus the misappropriations continue, largely without consequence.

Same as with global warming: "As temperatures rise."

It's a fundamental flaw in human thinking--the assumption that whatever is happening now will keep happening. It's the source of all Malthusian fallacies.

(Sound of a drill) Then "Boom!" as the vapor-filled tank detonates.

Gas prices in Ohio are $3.50 per gallon. In 2022, they peaked at $5 per gallon. WaPo really thinks people are stupid.

WaPo really thinks people are stupid

…there’s so much extra stupid lately with media’s expectation we won’t recall what they reported to us a short time ago. There’s this fuel price stuff, The White House what now? 3.0 where they already did deep dive and yes, the President has the authority to build the new wing but we’re expected to forget that now…what else- golf is going thru this liv be pga tour thing where the tour was sued and rather then disclose in discovery how many billions they make there was a supposed ‘merger’ of the two entities where tour players were hashing out agreements. Now suddenly the Saudis are pulling out and the tour is ready to enact revenge on the players who defected. I’m expected to forget all that merger bs- twas all in my imagination…

rhhardin ayon kay ...

Draining gas tanks came in with the gas lines in the 70s making gas unavailable, in response to locking gas caps.

It wasn't price so much. In fact the lines were because the price wasn't allowed to rise.

It's all completely anecdotal, I call bs on the framing here. The Washington Post reported *without evidence.

Siphoning Gas is so old-fashioned. Pretty much everyone has locked gas caps and car alarms. If you're crooked enough to steal gasoline you can probably think of easier ways to dishonestly make money.

"As fuel prices rise, a new technique of gas theft is spreading/With simple tools, thieves are 'drilling and draining' fuel from vehicles, leaving drivers with costly repair bills"

The left supports allowing illegal alien murderers and rapists to roam free, but they're concerned about 'costly repair bills'?

Yeah, sure.

Howard ayon kay ...

It's not new. Pretty common in California due to permanent high gas prices

Didn't read, but sounds like an educational article. Teaching how to steal gas. Reminds me of news stories warning parents about the latest fad of getting high by snorting/drinking/smoking some common product.
Next day, newly informed kids buying or shoplifting glue , lacquer thinner, Sudafed etc.

Not only are gas prices rising, but IT'S ALL TRUMP'S FAULT!!!

stlcdr ayon kay ...

The story is that Trump is responsible for rising crime.

The reality is that gas is not that expensive; there was a step jump, but even with that, it's still pretty low. The trend before the 2022 bump is above what it is at the latest spike, by my estimate.

As long as you are under the car, you might as well cut off the catalytic converter before drilling the tank. Always do this BEFORE drilling the tank! Safety is no accident.

My corner gas station here in DC has been holding at $4.19 for about two weeks. CC, JSM

> birdshot

Oh good grief - - birdshot, as the Box o' Truth people like to say is for birdies. It's less likely to make a lasting impression on the miscreant, but it's still assault with a deadly weapon that will be hard to justify anywhere in the US as being necessary self-defense.

Joe Bar ayon kay ...

Our local station went down .10 in the past week.

Drilling fuel tanks used to hard and dangerous. The tanks were sheet steel, and sparks and heat were created.

Now, they are mostly plastic. Easier to drill without creating a real hazard. Just wrap your drill in a rag to keep the commutator sparks from ingniting the gasoline.

Drilling tanks sounds like something thieves might do while they're stealing your catalytic converter.

During COVID one of my many pet peeves was the somber news reader saying "The death toll from COVID continued to climb today." Well duh, the death toll could only go up unless COVID was creating zombies, in which case we really would have been screwed.

Aggie ayon kay ...

Blame the advent of battery-powered tools, the hand drills and reciprocating saws. Stealing the catalytic converters off cars is also a modern crime, platinum is worth lots. Many modern cars have 2, especially trucks with V-8s - and trucks are high off the ground, easy to get under. Get your Milwaukee Sawzall and a fresh fine-toothed blade and you can drop them both in about 5 minutes without much noise - at least, until the owner starts 'er up the next morning, with no mufflers.

As for gas tanks, virtually all of them are made of black ABS now, and it's soft to keep it flexible across a range of temperatures. Yeah, they'll get a nice sharp twist bit and be draining gas in about 20 seconds. Fill their containers and just walk away, leaving the rest to run out on the ground.

Bullets work well for this. If you have the right caliber, you can even use a round to plug the hole in the tank, thus being a good steward of your environment in two ways.

“Self-government has proven a one-party-state disaster for California and its neighbors.”

CALIFORNIA FORBIDS OFFSHORE PRODUCTION, FORCES REFINERIES TO CLOSE, AND YOU’LL NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT: California ‘running out of fuel’ as imports dry up, Trump needs to act to prevent crisis: experts.

These problems will extend far beyond the state. Nevada gets about 80% of its gasoline from California, and Arizona gets nearly half of its supply from the state. California is also home to a dozen ports through which a large portion of U.S. exports and imports are transferred, and the state is home to key West Coast military bases. It’s also nearly 15% of the U.S. economy. Without fuel, operations at California’s businesses and industries, and these important ports and bases, will be severely impacted.
