Saw a buddy at happy hour and he mentioned that he and wife are going to hear Bob Dylan tomorrow night in Chattanooga. He said it’s a smallish venue (~3,500 capacity) and the tickets were only $85. Pretty cool…

And since I’m in the golf zone, I’ll share a fun story with connections to that area:

I have two good friends who are members of a very fine club just outside of Chattanooga - The Honors Course. We had gone up for a few days on a golf trip and I’m the early rise so on the second morning I walked over to their gorgeous practice facility from our cabin and warmed up.

With most of the member from out of state, the club gets very limited play - maybe thirty rounds per day. I’m the only person on the practice green and I’m chipping and putting, and out walks an older gentleman and he makes his way over.

He’s dressed in creased wool pants, polished shoes, and a starched white shirt - elegant for an early morning practice. But he doesn’t have clubs, just one of those walking sticks with the little fold-out leather ‘seat’. And he props up about ten yards away from the green and fires up a big cigar.

I have an excellent short game and he’s paying attention to my technique and eventually calls out a few fine shots. I walk over and introduce myself - as I’m a guest and he’s clearly a member. We chat about golf and I asked him what he’s smoking. I compliment his taste and he says to hang on a minute.

He goes into the clubhouse and returns with three Romeo y Julietta Churchill Habana Tubos and hands them to me. I’m really liking this guy a lot at the moment, and when I get back to the cabin I mention my new friend and relay how splendid he was. One of them said that I’d be splendid too if I had a few billion sitting around… lol

The gentleman was Scotty Probasco. Very old banking and Coca-Cola bottling money. They said when he went to Dartmouth his trust exceeded the school’s endowment. As my grandfather loved to say: ‘It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, it never hurts to have a lot of money.’ :)

Freud developed a theory of the human mind, involving postulated entities like the ego and the id, all operating within an environment somehow informed by the experiences of the organism. The current status of this theory is peculiar; most people who continue to attempt to practice the pseudoscience of psychology regard it as no more "scientific" than astrology. But it still has a sizeable number of adherents along that continuum of error, which runs from starry-eyed delusion to clear-eyed grift, with most practitioners situated somewhere near the middle of the spectrum.

I was very surprised. I belong yo a Facebook group that has nothing to do with politics. Someone commented about the No Kings marches today (I had no idea they were today.) The comments were 99% anti the protesters. There was one lonely comment in support and that was it. I’m hoping for a positive midterm result.

Jupiter বলেছেন...

However that may be, I am wondering whether we might profitably (in the non-monetary sense) apply Freud's model to AI. Are there observable distinctions between Grok and ChatGPT (of course there are)? If so, might we trace them back to fluctuations in the influence of ChatGPT's ego, as opposed to Grok's id (of course we can)? And can these differences be understood in Freudian terms, as the consequences of the differences in their life experiences (to ask the question is to recognize the answer)?

hugh42 বলেছেন...

Sunrise one of the best ever. You focussed on the reflection and increased the exposure? I love the attention to something common and extraordinary. Keep it up!

@Eva Marie, my understanding is that the last round of No Kings marches was at the end of March, not today.

@Dave Begley, I thought Beasts was relating a past story.

It’s funny because the post was dated today, so maybe the poster was mixed up about that.

For all the music fans out there, you might enjoy Begin Again. Fantastic movie with Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley. Kind of a love story, except it's all about the love of music. Fun movie, shot on the streets of New York.

If you like art about war, one of the finest shows I've ever seen is SAS: Rogue Heroes. It's a BBC series about the creation of the first commando unit in World War 2. Based on a true story. Fantastic. This is by the guys who did Peaky Blinders (which is a great show about gangsters back in the day). This one is even better. Dramatic and funny. Two seasons so far. A+ all the way.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I'm currently watching To Have and Have Not. Fantastic movie that improves every time I watch it.

My top 10 Bogart movies:

Casablanca
The Maltese Falcon
Sabrina
To Have and Have Not
Across the Pacific
Dark Passage
Dead Reckoning
All Through the Night
Key Largo
In a Lonely Place

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Bogart inspired the French New Wave. He worked primarily with Hawks and Huston, but also Curtiz, Wilder, and Ray.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Bogart playing with his metal balls is pretty funny. But not top 10 funny. Bogart in the jungle is okay. He's way better in the city. And Bogart homeless, begging, and greedy? I'm like, "What the fuck?" I could not suspend my disbelief.

What about the fourth Bacall movie? The BBC calls it, The Most Baffling Film Ever Made.

I read that Hawks was confused, and Bogart was confused, and everybody on the set was confused. And they called up Chandler to straighten it out, and he didn't know, either. Dude.

@Jupiter on Freud --

Freud was goofy and never had scientific credibility. His audience was lonely, anxious, middle-class "Karens" who wanted to discuss relationship issues. He created wild fiction as a storyteller. The "Royal Road to the Unconscious" is nonsense -- that's not how brains and cognition work.

Freud's analyses kind-of-sort-of make sense within his framework, but always leave many people confused. Carl Jung followed Freud in the literary analysis tradition (and much later Joseph Campbell). They are much more coherent but not scientific either. The main thing I see in their symbolic frameworks are nice ways to structure plots in fiction: heroes, villains, the "shadow" of oneself. The dynamics of interaction. Their internal logic makes a lot of sense for paint-by-numbers comics/graphic novels and psychodramas.

AI could absolutely free-associate to build on any of the above. I'd not pit Grok against ChatGPT, rather, work within a single platform. All AI platforms are products of their source material plus "safety guardrails" to discourage suicide, violence, delusions, etc. Frankly, an AI chat is likely to have as positive an outcome as a real psychoanalyst for many people. Much cheaper too. The humans in that industry have a "framework" or "stance" that they push on clients -- pound those square pegs into round holes. Project project project.

How many unvetted Chinese crossed the border illegally during Biden? I'm sure they all just came here for a better life...

Mike (MJB Wolf) বলেছেন...

Iran is halting any petrochemical sales "for domestic use" they say. So either triple D was wrong and our blockade is highly effective or Lil Skurvy is wrong that they have a huge reserve or their both wrong about China getting "all the oil they want." China got 4 tankers in return for a promise to stop sending arms. The prior shipments, again contra triple d, did not in fact make it to Iran.

If you want the direct report watch Gen Caine's briefing from yesterday which went into excruciating detail vessel by vessel on exactly how that blockade is working. He had satellite photos to back up his report too, unlike the AI Ctrl-V types around here who seem to get all their war reporting from the IRGC and democrats.

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

Narciso, I love your posts. But some of them are like spy messages, I got to decipher them!

"he romanticized the lunacy of balaclava" = The Charge of the Light Brigade

"fictionalized the reilly plot against lenin" = British Agent

I haven't seen either of those movies. Now I kinda want to! Thanks.

Curtiz, of course, is also the director of the finest movie ever made by anybody: Casablanca. He gets almost zero credit for it. People think he was lucky or something. But he also made The Adventures of Robin Hood and the other Errol Flynn swashbucklers.

I suspect he was a deeply romantic filmmaker, and he hit a jackpot with Bogart and Bergman. Casablanca was basically propaganda, designed to get the USA to fight the Nazis. But Curtiz's movie is so damn romantic and intensely felt, that nobody cares about the political subtext much, or even notices it. That art is phenomenal, the Mona Lisa of cinema.

narciso বলেছেন...

Of course he was the most responsible for Casablanca ad with many films hard to think of a modern analogue

Saint Croix বলেছেন...

I"m buying a copy of The Charge of the Light Brigade, sight unseen. Great trailer, with the cast and crew of Robin Hood. I don't know how I missed that one.

I'm going to skip British Agent, based on the trailer and that low IMDB score.

The big anti-Communist filmmaker is Billy Wilder. People don't notice this. But he wrote the script for Ninotchka, by far the coolest of the anti-Communist movies, and wrote and directed One, Two, Three, by far the funniest. He also write and directed Sabrina, the ultimate defense of capitalism, where he blows up all the class obsessions of the left. A thousand kudos to Billy Wilder, genius.
