"Rory wins again…I think. CBS missed the last 4 shots. I guess that’s what happens when you have one camera covering the course and the rest pointing at teenagers watching the broadcast in Ireland."

One fan posted, quoted in "CBS bashed for botching Rory McIlroy’s Masters-winning shots" (NY Post).

Is there any sport left where the camera-work isn't completely inept?

well…to be fait the last two approach shots were from odd places- Rory was closer to the tenth fairway for his second and was hitting over trees so anyone near the 18th green would have to miraculously pick up the ball mid air as it crested the trees. Young hit his tee shot so far it ended up over the fairway bunkers on the left side of 18, near the 9th hole. I spent a good part of Thursday sitting at the 18th green and can say there were 2 or 3 portable film cameras on tripods around the green but most of the television camera locations are fixed. I don’t recall ever seeing a portable camera and crew standing in the fairway or anywhere the way they often do at other tournaments. There are camera platforms and booms and drones everywhere however. Augusta is…special…

I think the problem is innate: the balls are too small. Every other sport has bigger balls. Even women's sports these days.

imTay કહ્યું...

Yeah, there were a couple of "Wait, wut?" moments there.

rehajm કહ્યું...

…as for the victory putt, there’s a camera position below the scoreboard between 10 and 18 that usually captures the hole out for Sunday’s hole location on 18. Not sure how they botched that one…

…the curling is pretty good…

Golf telecasting has been revolutionized in a positive way by the widespread use of ball tracking technology. When a shot goes wildly off, the tracking tech can't work.
Golf telecasting has been hobbled by the contractually required reverence that the announcers are obliged to express for the event organizers. Also, the announcers are forever pursuing sentimental angles that bore me. I don't care about the wives, the children, the parents, or anything else that doesn't focus on the competition.
They particularly need to do a better job of showing us the speed and topography of the greens.

Not gonna happen. You have to be there.

"the curling is pretty good…"

Since the women curlers started dressing like cleaning ladies, and since the sport includes what used to be a corn broom, but now looks like a mop... It's just not the same.

You are starting to see this masculine style dressing leaking into ladies golf, which is also a drag.

I didn't seem to notice. Rory made a great shot to get into the Sand and was headed for a bogey. Scottie had his chance, with a great drive but couldn't convert. Rory really won the tournament when he not only got through 11-13 without a bogey, he birdied 12.

Who can forget everyone putting it the water on 12, and letting Tiger catch up and win for the last time.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

The Masters seems to always have great finishes and great players in the mix. Rory and Scottie are No. 1 and 2 in the world rankings and who's battling it out for the Champiionship? Rorry and Scottie.

Peachy કહ્યું...

I watched the last few holes. After Rory biffed it into the woods on the last hole, his shot out of the woods went into the sand trap. The cameras lost it.
I laughed.

Peachy કહ્યું...

The cameras lost the other guy's last green shot, too.
I laughed.

Peachy કહ્યું...

A white golf ball in a white sand trap - yikes. Rory really handled it like a pro. The camera crew, not so much.
But it wasn't a big deal. clam down.

If you can't be at the game, I'm generally happy with the job they do with hockey.

What I'm not happy about (and it's not the cameraman's fault) is the graphics they add to the broadcast. It's hard enough to follow the puck on tv without the computer generated nonsense they put on the screen such as those animated circles and floating nametags that often obscure the puck.

I have some old tournaments on tape. Not labeled. Stored as randomly as possible. I bust one out when I can't sleep.

Still better than ESPN's coverage. They've turned the Par Three contest into unwatchable dreck.

Too much sports broadcasting has become how people feel, or should feel, about the event/athletes rather than the competition/performance, itself. ESPN/NFL/Olympics…

JES કહ્યું...

Let's face it. Golf is hard for everyone including the camera crew. My favorite part of the Masters is the last shot, even though it was only a few inces, and then the crowd yelling and the hugging, and Rory kissing his wife and the kids in the bar in Ireland.

Mason G કહ્યું...

"Too much sports broadcasting has become how people feel, or should feel, about the event/athletes rather than the competition/performance, itself."

If the post-game interviewer is female, the first question asked is usually some variation of "How does it feel right now?"

That was my initial reaction to ampersand's suggestion, too. I had the privilege of being there for a practice round a few years ago, and the greens were the most astonishing memory. If I were to four-putt one, I think I'd feel good that I didn't five- or six-putt it.

The camera tracking of the balls was horrible on Sunday. They’d keep the camera on the golfer well after their shot, and not on the ball path. Cannot remember such creepy personality driven coverage ever before in a lifetime of watching golf on TV.

For me, Christianity and golf do not mix. They ought to mix. They mix for other people. One of my priests just published a book about spirituality and golf. All the wonderful lessons you can learn on the 18 holes. To celebrate its publication, the men's golf group at our church moved our spiritual retreat to the spring. And added golf.

Now, I am a winter spiritual retreat guy. Walks in the snow, huge fireplace, intimate conversations about the holy spirit. And liquor. Episcopalians are the party animals of Christianity. Ask anybody. I'm a regular at the January spiritual retreat. But I skipped our spiritual retreat this year. And I will tell you why.

I do okay on the golf course. Bogey, double bogey, double bogey, par, maybe even a birdie. But then I hit one hole, out of the 18, where I shoot a 19. And I am throwing my clubs. And I am cursing so loud.

Happy Gilmore is my spirit animal. You know that scene in Caddyshack, where the priest died? That is my scene. Ooooo, golf.

rehajm કહ્યું...

My father and his best friend would often play golf with a catholic priest. The best friend was a devout Catholic, a soft spoken, dignified man and a low single digit golfer. On the course he could curse up a storm when he hit a bad shot. ‘F-bomb, JHC…sorry father’ was his oft recited rant. He passed a few years ago but we repeat his ‘sorry farther’ whenever someone cusses a bad shot…

Mason G કહ્યું...

"You know that scene in Caddyshack, where the priest died?"

He was struck by lightning but he didn't die.

The Golf announcing used to be pretty good, Johnny Miller etc. but now its so bad I turn the sound off. Like Tennis, American Network execs want every Goddamn second filled with talk.

Bishop Pickering didn't die.

That's not okay. That sucks.

I'm glad the priest lived! That's a funny scene.

I went with a coupla guys, thought, Hell, take a six pack, have fun, smack a ball around.. So, I took three balls, . Worked out that was a mistake. I discovered I couldn't hit one far enough to lose it.

Jim at કહ્યું...

I discovered I couldn't hit one far enough to lose it.

When I was first learning the game, people were always giving me tips on how to hit it farther.

"Why would I want to walk 10 yards deeper into the woods?"

sorry father…

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

I haven't played golf in 20 years. That's probably the real reason I didn't go on the retreat. And my clubs are missing. I don't know where my clubs are. (In the lake, probably).

I actually only threw one club, one time. But the memory remains.

Dude1394 કહ્યું...

It is pretty amazing. You have an iconic tourney where they don’t even allow commercial breaks. And you screw up covering every shot from the guy who is the defending champion, has led almost the entire time and is in the last grouping . Wowsers, someone needs firing.

Dude1394 કહ્યું...

I was actually pretty stunned he took driver on that last one.
