What bothers me the most about this whole dust-up is the pope saying "God does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war." I'm a Catholic, although a convert, and I don't ever remember being told that Catholics think God ignores anyone's prayers. In fact, just the opposite. God is a God of mercy and forgiveness. He listens to everyone's prayers - the publican and the Pharisee. The way the pope phrased it, it sounds to my ears as if he is saying that there are sins which can cause God to reject you.
