People standing again for the National Anthem instead ostentatiously taking a knee. That’s gotta make Democrats worried.

That was lovely. Never seen that before.
I can't whistle.

I want to listen to this, but when I turned up my volume my dog immediately thought we were being invaded or something. She almost never barks or growls these days - we're figuring she only has a few days to a week left on this mortal coil - so I will wait until I'm not with her rather than stress her out.

But the few notes I did hear sounded unbelievably like a legit musical instrument. Ah, talent...

@Jamie, sorry for your pup, but kudos to you for your return of the loyal affection, I hope for a gentle and un-traumatic passing.

An amazing number of grace notes.

Occasionally, he sounds like a warbling bird. I wonder if whistling is similar in some specific physical way to the way birds warble.

Sure it's good whistling, but completely inappropriate to perform the National Anthem in this manner. It's a slippery slope that leads to belching the lyrics or to inviting flatulists to perform the song with their ungodly instruments.

In her late 80s, my aunt & her Towson Episcopal church choir sang the anthem at an Orioles game. Turned out, they had to bring in ringers, because at her funeral at 94 in 2018, the church didn't have a choir left and had to share a (female) priest. Made me angry during the service that they didn't show up, until I found out, as she'd been in the choir since the 60s.

It is rather odd that the pinnacle of the art of whistling is a championship, which implies that whistling is a sort of athletic endeavor. No one speaks of opera singing in those terms, nor any form of musical instrumentalism, even though whistling is a close cousin to singing, requiring similar strengths and abilities in the lungs, the diaphragm, and the oral cavity. However, virtuoso whistling requires another physical skill singers seldom need to acquire -- the embouchure of an accomplished flautist.

Explain the “oh” and Baltimore thing to me.

Just a heads up: Whistling is considered by some to be a threat. (Full disclosure: I whistle on occasion. My father, born in 1916, WWII vet, whistled, so I suppose I picked it up from him.) I was softly whistling a tune (To myself, or so I thought), as I checked out the goods on the disco rack at a local grocer, when a guy came up, stood next to me and "requested" (in a somewhat ominous way) that I stop with the whistling. He explained (in a somewhat ominous way) that his grandfather whistled and something something something about being whooped or abused, he was re-traumatized by my unobtrusive music-making. I was solicitous. I shoulda told him to fuck off, but he seemed ... Ominous. There is something about whistling that sets some people off. (I must admit that, when I hear "jazz whistling," it sets me off.

Several pro sports teams' fans will yell out at certain words during the national anthem ... didn't know about the Orioles "O". Atlanta Braves fans will yell out at the "home of the Brave", ha. For hockey fans in Las Vegas, they yell out "Knight" at "gave proof through the night"

My dad was a phenomenal, highly musical whisperer. I would venture that he was a substantially better whistler than this guy, always on pitch. Sadly, it is a skill that I didn't inherit. As a boy, one of the greatest sounds in the world to me was the sound of my dad whistling down the driveway to get in his pickup truck and go to work.

“Explain the “oh” and Baltimore thing to me.”

I don’t really know but I assume it is some tribute to the fact that ft. mchenry is in Baltimore and they are making a local claim that the flag is more special to them, a sense of ownership.

To my ears the guy needs to use auto tune. Not perfect pitch, but kind of fun,

O, I gave Baltimore more credit than they deserve, if it just means oreals
