"It's discouraging to come up here and see all the heads down..."/"Sir, you're on a 2-minute timer here so let's go."

I love the elegance with which the citizen adapted to the city council's effort to throw him off, to reduce him to nothing. He made the experience into the substance of what he was able to say within the harsh time constraint. He spoke slowly and with dignity and even worked in a George Orwell quote.

How dare you talk to us, peasant. Very well, you can talk but only briefly, and we don’t have to listen.

Oh. Its Seattle. Of course.

Wince చెప్పారు...

The most revealing point was the audible "sigh" from the open mic of the Chair in response to "the state of our Democracy."

Lefties hate when called out on their own tropes.

Well played. Leave evidence of your work.
At some point, Stein's law will execute its will.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

I had a different reaction. Was that what he wanted to discuss? No a substantive issue but "People are not paying attention to me"? Or crabbing about how so-and-so got more time?

What is the council supposed to do, drop everything to listen to him with rapt attention? And then there's a problem of 100 people wanting to talk and bring up their personal issues. That's why you get 2 minutes. I don't see how there's a way around that.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

The reality is that rando individuals going up to talk the council for 2 minutes aren't going to change anything. Especially when you want to talk about "The state of our Democracy". What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Is that man really wants to change things - as opposed to just "venting" and going on an ego trip - he should organize a group and have an agenda to correct what he sees as a problem.

JAORE చెప్పారు...

"I love the elegance with which the citizen adapted to the city council's effort to throw him off, to reduce him to nothing."

Me too. Except the net result remains, to the board, he IS nothing. The board is emblematic of today's left. They may be required to let you speak. They'll be damned if anyone can make them hear.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

On 2nd thought, if his only plan was to make the Seattle City Council look bad, he accomplished that. But what comes after that? Yeah, he might have been given less time because he's a white man. Or a Crank. And now?

He was dignified but completely ineffectual. He must be a Republican.

It's indeed a sad day when our Democracy could be best protected by a series of brisk, arbitrary smacks upside the head of some of our leaders, in public, to remind them of whom they report to. Like these ones.

Jake చెప్పారు...

The council woman seemed like a real cunt.

One of the reasons I left elected office was the attitude of politicians toward their constituents. The arrogance and indifference was not something I could abide. Wow. That gave me a pang for Michael, who was a constituent at the time.

hombre చెప్పారు...

Public hearings, BTW, are usually pro forma. Congressional hearings are also for Congressthings to impress themselves.

James K చెప్పారు...

It would be nice to know what he was originally planning to talk about. But his on-the-fly point was not so much the time limit, but, "If you're only giving me 2 minutes, at least have the decency to listen." More effective than if he had stuck to his original (whatever it was) issue.

Aggie చెప్పారు...

By the way the small city I live in is considerably more conservative, but the City Council is just as obnoxious, except they sometimes seem to be in the pockets of real estate developers, businesses, and builders instead of socialist activists.

But last week, plans leaked about their proposed expansion of the city for growth, and the plans would have torpedoed a nice community that's about 20 years old. The citizens organized and attended the meetings en masse, demanded more hearings and disclosures, got their grievances presented in a professional way, and effectively warthogged the torpedoes. And there was much rejoicing.

So citizens can affect the course of city government - when they choose to live in places that govern by consent instead of impose demands.

DEIsm is indeed equitable and inclusive, bipartisan even, but also a principle defining character.

Jeff చెప్పారు...

I sat on councils and commissions for 30 years and I always did my best to appear attentive to public speakers. Sincerity is the key. If you can fake that you’ve got it made, as someone once said.

Zavier Onasses చెప్పారు...

Agreed. Elegantly done.

Many folks do not understand the Public Comment period, when allowed, in public meetings. In Texas, likely in most venues, the Open Meetings Act applies.

The head table (Commissioners, Board Members, etc.) when assembled in a quorum may not discuss nor vote on any subject unless on the agenda of a public meeting, published three days in advance.

This gives the public notice to any laws / ordinances their elected officials may be considering. As a consequence, if a citizen broaches a subject not on the published agenda, the head table can only listen but make no comment.

Original Mike చెప్పారు...

"City council meetings are the most dispiriting things I've ever been involved in."

I learned my lesson years ago when the City wanted to do something to a small neighborhood park which violated the terms of the deed under which the original owner donated the land to the City for the park. The City asked the City attorney for a ruling that the deed was not violated (it clearly was). 'You don't want to ask me to do that', she replied. She eventually did and the City proceeded with what they wanted to do. (The back and forth was in emails we were able to obtain from a freedom of information request.)

I spent many, many hours and not a small amount of money on that issue as a member of a neighborhood group trying to stop the City from putting a private business in the park. I learned my lesson.

It's the Seattle City Council. He was probably visited that night and has not been seen or heard from again.
They do love a little Soviet life with their coffee in Seattle.

Joe Bar చెప్పారు...

I used to think these types of hearings were useless, until my brother had a real problem that needed addressing. It took him two visits, but he was able to get the neighboring town to close a dirt road that was stranding travelers in the winter.

He was the closest resident, and they would pound on his door in the middle of the night.

Politicians are responsible to the bloc that elects them and the donors that fund them (if they are responsible at all). Opponents and outsiders don't get much of a hearing.

There was an 18th/19th century discussion about whether representatives should vote their conscience or vote as their constituents wished. Now (if not much earlier) we know that politicians vote and act only as their party, its base, and its donors want.

Living in Atlanta, and attending a lot of county and city council meetings, I would darkly amuse myself (on the advice of our saintly Assistant Chief of Police, demoted for proving that the Chief of Police, an horrific, unkind, black woman who publicly mocked black rape victims at Freaknik, comparing them to cows that escaped on a highway, and concealed underage rapes at Black Magic Strip Club) by trying to endure.

Being Sicilian and northern, I did try, but I lacked the temperament and etiquette of Southerners.

That was under a minute.

IamDevo చెప్పారు...

Lefties know that all political power eventually comes out of the barrel of a gun and when they control the guns, they've got the power. We who fancy ourselves constitutional conservatives, on the other hand, stupidly cling to the notion that enlightened discourse is sufficient to carry the day. That, and voting. How charming.

Why am I not amazed?

What is the council supposed to do, drop everything to listen to him with rapt attention?

Well yes, considering that that’s ostensibly the whole point of having hearings. You do get the relationship between the words “hearing” and “listening,” right?

And then there's a problem of 100 people wanting to talk ,,,

If 100 people are that pissed off maybe thdir eme Ted representatives should find out why. Just sayin’

I don't see how there's a way around that.

Well you wouldn’t, would you?

Bill Ayers showed us what to do. Set fires. Kill people with bombs. Shoot people. Perhaps the citizens of Seattle should buy his book?

Big Mike చెప్పారు...

Elected representatives. Some day I will get hang of proofreading.

SGT Ted చెప్పారు...

Its Seattle? Oh well, that mayor woman is a Communist, so her attitude fits.

I also like how most of these petty Star Chambers sit on an elevated dais, physically above those who have come to challenge their omniscience. Of course they are going to hear from all sorts of kooks and crackpots (it is Seattle, after all) but one of the default settings for public officials should not be absolute dickhead/cunt.

Colleen Brown చెప్పారు...

The councilwoman was rude, but somehow I get the sense that this guy is a "frequent flyer" and they have already heard his speech about the state of our democracy before. Hence the sign when he said it.

Colleen Brown చెప్పారు...

I meant sigh, not sign.

I too appreciate his calm substantive thinking in the moment. It has had some effect, perhaps, because we're talking about it and it apparently happened about 7 years ago.

boatbuilder చెప్పారు...

In the medium-sized CT town where I used to live, the Town Council imposed a 5-minute rule for public comments. The reason for it was that there were 2 or 3 local gadflies who would get up at every meeting and ramble on about whatever was bothering them that week for a half hour or 45 minutes or as long as they could go until the chair had to politely cut them off. All for the meetings started at 6 and would last until after 10:00, mostly because of the clowns who loved the sounds of their own voices.
Two minutes is perhaps a little short. But where the town council is made up of unpaid volunteers, if you want reasonable and responsible citizens to run for and sit on local boards, you need to have some reasonable constraints.

It's way past time to keep tolerating such disrespect from "representatives". They are entirely too comfortable with the "we are important" BS. You're not. Easily replaceable. We used to have a respectable country.

Whoa. Go read about the Port Washington, WI shenanigans regarding the bulldozer-approvals of a new 1000-acre data center, likely crippling the PW municipal finances for years to come. Developer is front-funding $175 million in new water infrastructure improvements, solely required by new data center campus on newly annexed campus acreage. City of PW taxpayers will PAY BACK that $175 million, plus 7% interest, via a mega Tax Increment Financing scheme approved by near-unanimous vote in State Assembly. Doesn't matter what your party affiliation, your local government officials are squarely in the pocket of big business, particularly those mega-billion corporations who come to town like the Music Man --- all promises, none to be fulfilled. In Wisconsin, it's called "BEING FOXCONNED".
