"I made a necessary break with everything.... I broke up with my business partner. I broke up with my partner. I had a hysterectomy. I stepped back from work."

"It was it was, like, I went from full on to, like, sitting in a back room in my parents apartment in silence collaging letters together and... my mom coming in and being, like, 'That's really nice.'... It was not a time where I was capable of really keeping anything going and I'm not a big — so much has happened in my life that's wonderful and so much has something that's challenging — I'm not a big redux person. Like, I look back and I go — I remember once I said to my mom like, 'I'm so glad you're my mom.' And she was like, 'It could have been no other way.' And there's so much it could have been no other way in this story. And I like... I had to detach from this entity that I had created and everyone who was responsible for helping me keep that entity alive."

The entity is Lena Dunham:

Dunham wrote an interesting article in the New Yorker about why she left New York. It wasn't really New York's fault. She had too many memories of mental challenges in New York, so she moved to London to start fresh.

Interesting, because it comes off as honest and rather mundane.

Why did bad things happen to Lena Dunham? A lot of good things happened to her too, it seems to me. Good and bad happen to everyone.

But I will say that I know of a lot more... what's a good word... see, "deviance" is what comes to mind, but I don't like the connotation of moral judging when all I'm trying to get across is something like "being far from the mean, the norm, something like that" among the children of my progressive friends than among the children of my more centrist or conservative ones. It's not that they're all way off the norm, or that none of my conservative friends' kids are leading lives that in a franker age we might have called "weird," but it seems more prevalent on the left side. I suppose it's to do with moral judgment after all, sort of: on balance, conservatives still do set behavioral standards, I think, whereas progressives set attitudinal ones.

Wondering whatever happened to Lena Dunham has occupied precisely zero percent of my thoughts lately. And now you have ruined that blissful lack of awareness. Nice one.

Gerda Sprinchorn કહ્યું...

Dunham's series "Too Much" is weirdly interesting. The hysteria knob was turned up 4 notches throughout. Kind of hysteria as an aesthetic. I have decidedly mixed feelings about it.

Gerda Sprinchorn કહ્યું...

Dunham was great in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Her portrayal of a hysterical avenging harpy is spot on. Very effective in the hands of a director who isn't Dunham.

The number of completely failed worthless people given status and wealth in our society is grotesque.

Nobody should have ever cared about a single thing Lina Dunham every did. The best thing she could have done for society is have some kids, make some sandwiches for a man that built things, and in general just kept her mouth shut.

She was never worth the attention she was given, but we all know who watches TV the most and who is buying the most stuff.

MadisonMan કહ્યું...

How about a break from babbling.

Barf. No way I look at that. She was on the Skip Gates genealogy show I enjoy and that was a pass too.

Quoting one-hit-wonder Timbuk3 on the B-side of life (not their one hit):

Who am I? Do you recognize me?
Of course you don't, I'm nobody
I have no money, I have no name
I tear the tickets at the Hall of Fame

I buy my dinner at the 7-Eleven
Eat it in the kitchen while I watch TV
I like my free time and I love my wife
You'll find my number on the B-side of life

Once I got lucky, I had a band
We had a song, it got to number 3
Made lots of money, made lots of friends
Had lots of pretty people hangin' 'round me

Now all I want is a place to hide
To feel safe from the chaos outside
A cold refrigerator, a warm bed
A place where no one will stick a gun to my head

I buy my dinner at the 7-Eleven
Eat it in the kitchen while I watch TV
I like my free time and I love my wife
We're happy living on the B-side of life

What in the world ever happened to sweet Jane?
She’s lost her sparkle - you know she isn’t the same.
Livin’ on reds, vitamin C, and cocaine.
All her friends can say is, ‘ain’t it a shame.’

You seem to have a theme today about the pathetic cries for relevance of highly irresponsible people whose time has passed. What the hell?

wildswan કહ્યું...

She has her place in a world I don't live in. I can't really follow the twists and turns. And is it just a Brownian walk? cannoning off what's there into a new direction and then banging off something in that direction into a new, no, not new, different direction. So there's nothng to know even if you are Lena Dunham knowing Lena Dunham. But she is saying she's gained self-understanding and can control her direction. But maybe that's a narrative that people want to hear and she's once more selling a reality show: Part I Self-Destruction; Part II Self-Reconstruction. Her age group now wants a different Story of the Self and she's got it?

Peachy કહ્યું...

I had to detach from Lena a long time ago. All is well.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

USA Pop Culture is a toxic waste dump. Exhibit 1 - Lena Dunham. Evidently, we have so many conformist NPC's in the USA, that anyone can made into a "Celebrity" (sic) by Entertainment Industry and make zillions.

Even the man who coined the phrase "no one went broke underestimating the taste of the American public" would be shocked at 2026.

Ampersand કહ્યું...

In college and law school, I encountered many "gifted" people who devoted their gifts to rationalizations, deflections, and excuses for their failure to make good use of their gifts. Lena fits that profile.
To be fair, Lena is forced to deal with the many ways in which her genetic legacy has impeded her inborn hungers for the warmth, affection, meaning and visibility that can only come from a healthy adult relationship.
That has to be difficult for her, along with how tough it is for a big chunk of humanity.
There is no easy answer there.

Mr. T. કહ્યું...

It's very hard to find sympathy for someone like Lena Dunham who wants sympathy while making a living by smearing others.

She was "educated" at Oberlin in gender grift. If one like her voluntarily goes to leftwing insanity institutions and you come out depressed, rage-driven, with concept of personal liberty or self-value except to hate anyone who your leftist hivemind says, having been excised of any soul or value (and trying to falsely accuse with malice a male-the defamation suit threat pretty much killed her book deal) and finding no other solace or support except from dumpster fire libel merchants like the Daily Beast, Buzzbottomfeed, Jezebel, and NYHagMag, it's no surprised she turned to drugs.

Steve Austin Showed Up For Work. કહ્યું...

Interesting how much hate she generates! She made a semi-autobiographical show about young white women in NY on financial life support from their parents, which was somehow interesting enough to be popular. I'm not sure she has many more stories to tell because it's hard to have a Carrie Fisher memoir afterlife when you aren't Carrie Fisher. Making an autobiographical show about 40 year old Hollywood producers, that anyone would want to watch, is gonna be difficult.

I was never her target audience. I like her better than rap music......Someday soon, she'll go on Ozempic and tell us about how mistaken she was in her previous consciousness. Life is less depressing, if you're rich, fit, and attractive. It still sucks, but, taken as a whole, life is a better experience if you're rich and attractive rather than rich and fat.

Blair કહ્યું...

I hope she doesn't start taking Ozempic, she'll think she can be naked on TV again.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

The woman is overweight but isn’t calling her “a big chunk of humanity” going a bit far?

Lazarus કહ્યું...

Her show wasn't bad, but I wondered how much of that was due to Judd Apatow (whose politics aren't any better than Lena's).

She trashed her first TV show boyfriend, now she's trashing Adam Driver, the second. Kind of makes you wonder if they were the problem or if she (or Judd?) was. After she broke up with her real-life boyfriend, he married Andy McDowell's actress daughter, and Lena got much larger. She did find somebody to marry herself. So, not-so-little Lena, happy at last?

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

"Interesting how much hate she generates!"

I certainly don't hate her. I think she's a unfunny, boring, vulgar pig. And wish to think about her and see her as little as possible.

Lawnerd કહ્યું...

From the youtube photo I thought the story was about Jabba the Hut, but I was sadly mistaken and it was far less interesting.

rehajm કહ્યું...

You didn’t have to tell us you were on drugs, we could tell. Xanax and Adderall for starters. Is she better or just fucked ip and driving on the left now?

rehajm કહ્યું...

Remember all that talk with hr swirling around politics and Hillary! like she was some sort of muse? It was creepy her ability to het those old women who shot bank guards in the 60s to come out in public.

Mr. Hand: What is this person, on dope?!?

Scott M કહ્યું...

Yeah, this is pretty much how I expected her to end up. She was always punching way, way, WAY above her weight class.

“From the youtube photo I thought the story was about Jabba the Hut, but I was sadly mistaken and it was far less interesting.”
You reminded me of the great Cathy Seipp (who left us far too soon). She wrote of Nikki Finke (Deadline Hollywood founder)
“I haven’t seen Nikki in years, probably because these days she looks like Jabba the Hut, if you can imagine Jabba after he’s said to hell with the diets already.”

Rabel કહ્યું...

Didn't see it pointed out but Lena has a new book coming out today. You can purchase a hardcover through the Althouse Amazon portal for $21.00.

JAORE કહ્યું...

When you believe the whole world is working feverishly to hold you down. When people you only know by reputation and with whom you have zero contact can break your will or send you into a chasm of depression and fear. When all your crystal ball reveals is doom and gloom. When you ascended to heights beyond your abilities and reality snatches that away from you. When you eat your way to morbid obesity and remain in a profession that richly rewards only the young, fit and beautiful... you might be Lena Dunham.

(Apologies to Jeff Foxworthy.)

JAORE કહ્યું...

"She was always punching way, way, WAY above her weight class." Based on her picture, her "weight class" is a high bar.

Linda Fox કહ્યું...

I just checked - she is 39. How much of her breakdown is that she has pretty much closed the door on having a child? That can be devastating to an unmarried woman.
Motherhood is often the fallback for working single woman. If their career doesn't hit the high point they hoped for, well, there is the possibility of a second act. When that option is gone, and personal relationships have tanked, those women may have reached the end of their coping skills. In a city like NY, when the radical 'cool kids' no longer hang on your every word, life may seem hopeless.
I hope she finds meaning in her life. I hope even more it contains a turn off the Leftist pathway.
