"... a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East...."

Trump at Truth Social, an hour ago:

Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Yeah Ok, whatever. Given that Trump lied about negotiating with Iran before and has killed the Iranian negotiators, I doubt any "ceasefire" will lead to peace until the ink is dried on the agreeement.

If the strait opens, Trump has won. If the strait remains closed, hellfire can still be rained down on the mullahs but we will just be back to where we were today asking if Trump would follow through (I think he would).

The main issue as I see it is whether or not the negotiators for Iran are even in a position to tell the IRGC and the mullahs to open the strait. I think the odds greatly favor it remaining closed for most ships so I expect the bombings to start up again very soon.

DINKY DAU 45 said...

My wager is IRAN not opening the strait, What Iran has not done
Iran has not issued a formal public statement saying “we accept the ceasefire.”they have not yet confirmed they will open the Strait of Hormuz — the key condition.
So the ceasefire is announced by the U.S., supported by Pakistan, and under review by Iran, but not yet formally signed off by Tehran. And 2 weeks seize fire, before an agreement by IRAN. So Iran will now become good citizens and no longer a terrorist state, open the strait and want no reparations? This would be a good outcome if believeable, the markets will be excited, and hopefully no more Vets die for trumps war. How about a signed agreement 1st ,and then the TACO turnback seems to have solidity. So far thats 3 days, 5 days ,10 days and now 14more days, easy to be skeptical with two of the worlds major liars. God is still in charge I'll lay my marbles there, Pakistan is not Iran and how about BIBI the reason this whole thing got started. And BIBI SAYS??

Trump is looking around now and realizing the truth of that old poker line: “If you don’t know who the patsy is at the table, you’re the patsy.” Right now, he’s the patsy.

Trump’s staring at his cards, and none of them look like good plays. He’s sitting there realizing he got taken advantage of.He overreacted. Instead of sticking with the February 27th and 28th negotiations, he went all-in on the Netanyahu strategy. Now Trump finds himself in a very complicated situation.

It turns out the 2008–2010 version of Donald Trump, the 2015 version, and even Charlie Kirk—who famously warned last year at this time, “Don’t do it. They’re going to push you into this, and it’s going to be a disaster for us"

It turns out those versions of Donald Trump and Charlie Kirk were actually right. I know Trump is unpredictable, and you can’t send out Easter tweets like that without knowing he’s not entirely stable. But there are still kernels of self-preservation in him. He can’t bomb his way out of this one.

The best advice someone could give him right now is simple: slow down, wait this out, and buy some time. As his advisors have said all along, he needs to stop issuing these ultimatums. They only draw red lines that make it harder for him to walk anything back.

He should continue the current campaign while pushing hard for a diplomatic solution. Because the only way to resolve the uranium issue—and the only way to get the strait open—is through negotiation. He cannot bomb his way to getting that uranium back, and he cannot bomb the strait open right now.

Has there ever been a more surreal mass hallucination on one side of the American political spectrum than the "TACO" meme?

The best presidents in my lifetime (Reagan, Nixon, and grudgingly, Clinton) take two steps forwards, one step back, winning some ground with a little political compromise.

The shitty ones take one step forwards, two steps back, like old Bush pissing away our victory in the first Gulf war, or turn tail and never go forwards at all (Jimmy Carter, that heap of shit, and the senile Biden scumbag).

Trump goes 100 steps forward, 10 back. He black-bags a Communist dictator that has been a thorn in our side and an oppressor of his people for a couple of decades. He decimates entire Federal agencies that have turned into propaganda mills and money laundries for the Democrats. He jacks tariffs up to levels not seen for a hundred years, which onshores massive manufacturing investments including a huge chunk of the Taiwanese semiconductor industry. He destroys one of the three or four most wicked and oppressive governments on the planet in a month -- one that has killed thousands of Americans over the years -- after every president since Carter kicked the can down the road. And a dozen other bold actions that no other President in this milquetoast age would even dream of taking. Then the likes of Rich and Freder dance around like demented second graders taunting "TACO! TACO! TACO!"

They are living in a dream world.

Assuming you're an intelligent person, and not some Yeehaw 'murican just wanting to blow up stuff and thinking we're masters of the world, you need to answer this question. Why should Iran open up the strait and agree to a temporary ceasefire? What's in it for them?

Hasn't Trump already said the goal is regime change? Whats to stop Trump and Israel from "reloading" and bombing Iran again and once again demanding "regime change"?

From an Iranian POV, only a permenant ceasefire with ironclad guantees of no more attacks makes sense. If Trump can make a deal on that basis fine. But if not, the straits will remain closed, and there's little we can do about it.

The result is a diminishing audience. Such hubris. Why would you expect people to read your drek when you have such contempt for theirs.

If Iran did attack the US with a dirty bomb they would have to attack Kentucky or Texas or they would be killing their own supporters. NYC is the historical favorite target.

I once read an analysis of what would happen if our 20 largest cities were nuked and everyone in them were killed.

America would return to being 85-90 percent white and almost universally Christian. Republicans would hold a veto-proof/filibuster-proof majority in Congress and routinely win Presidential elections by 450 electoral votes. Median IQ would rise by 5 points. Median income would rise, but average income would fall. [If you don't understand how that could be, go back to the definitions of mean and median, and reflect on how there's a lot more poor people than rich people in the cities, but the rich people are REALLY rich.] The murder rate would fall to lower levels than in most of Europe.

There were a bunch more statistics along these lines that I can't recall, except to note that they were similarly striking and in many cases unexpected.

Now I'm not saying this would be a good thing, I'm just reporting the arithmetic. But I think I can point to such statistics as pretty solid proof the country would survive.

There’s no indication that Iran has agreed to anything, other than Trump’s word. And, at this point I’ve lost count of how many times and how many ways Trump has lied about the war, Iran, and negotiations.

When are you moving to Europe?

You are a piece of shit that doesn't belong in a great country like the United States.

You belong with the European losers. You are worthless and nobody likes you here.

When do you get the fuck out of our country? You belong in Europe with the other people like you.

You do not belong in a country as great as the United States. Obama was a fucking traitor and he needs to move to Europe too.

You are evil shitheads that do not believe in the same things our country does. You deserve to live in a country that will soon be run by Muslims.

Minnesota? Washington state? California? Oregon?

Any state whose political leadership - and majority of voters - aligns with them? And considers them to be political allies?

Assuming you're an intelligent person, and not some Yeehaw 'murican just wanting to blow up stuff and thinking we're masters of the world, you need to answer this question. Why should Iran open up the strait and agree to a temporary ceasefire? What's in it for them?

Not dying in a massive explosion or being hunted down and murdered in the middle of the night by Army Rangers.

Yes, of course. But we would be hurt far less than anyone else. We really don’t need the Strait for anything directly. Neither do most of allies in this conflict. We and they would be hurt, maybe, from the secondary effects. Throw Russia into that category too. The rest of the First, and much of 5he Seconf, would be significantly.

We might even come out ahead, with new PNG contracts.

Bruce Hayden said...

“I get why the remaining mad mullahs would want to flee the country. I don’t know where they’d flee to — maybe Afghanistan?”

I think that the likely answer is Russia. They apparently already have the official successor to the Ayatollah, in his son, who, last we knew, was in a comma, absent a leg, but still alive in Moscow. Russia is also good because it is relatively close, and they wouldn’t have to cross hostile territory to get there. Indeed, if we shutdown air travel by their leaders, they can still get to Russia by water.

Saint Croix said...

Okay, so Iran’s political leadership has agreed to a ceasefire. Iran, of course, is a military dictatorship. And the IIRC has not agreed. Maybe they will pause for two weeks? Maybe not. But it’s a very good sign civilian leadership is trying to reassert control.

Saint Croix said...

I think I spent $50 for a tank of gas the other day. Reminded me of the Biden years. The price of a barrel dropped 15% last night. Under $100 again. I would have saved $7.50. Not much of a trade-off for peace in the Middle East.

You need months and months of inflation for voters to get really mad. A few weeks of transitory inflation in March is not going to do it for the libs.

Democrats love high gas prices when it’s saving the world and funding the Green Nude Eel. But high gas prices are a disaster when we shut down a terrorist state that wants to kill us with nukes?

Democrats imagine that we have no enemies, except for the sun, which needs to be blotted out.

Bruce Hayden said...

I start with the opposite premise than the left does. Instead of assuming that he doesn’t know what he is doing, instead, I assume that he does know what hem is doing, and bamboozled Iranian leaders into doing what he wants them to.

First, I don’t think that he wanted to destroy Iran’s infrastructure. But Iran painted themselves into a corner, by allowing the Chinese to control the Strait, by selling oil in. Chinese Yuan to the Chinese. And probably everyone else. But we know China is transshipping their Iranian oil. We know where they are doing so, and will likely use military force to keep them from doing that successfully.

So, if he didn’t want to destroy Iran’s Infrastructure, what was he up to? Well, with Trump, there’s always a deal involved. The deal he was looking for was the 2 week ceasefire. How to get there? By scaring them that he might actually destroy Iran’s infrastructure. They all knew what both sides wanted. It just had to be sold. And part of the selling was that Trump was crazy enough that he might go through with it. The rescue of the F16E WSO was fortuitously timed. Not that it was Good Friday through Easter, but that it was right before the deadline. It showcased the US military, both its power and its dedication.

Bruce Hayden said...

I don't think that wholesale destruction was ever in the cards. Rather, I think the idea was to disable the infrastructure more creatively. Not take out the power generators, but disable the power lines. We have the technology to essentially drop iron chunks on the transmission lines, shorting them out. Requiring just the replacement of some transformers. And cutting a lot of pipelines. Or, even better, just take out pumps. High tech, effective, with low long term damage. The F15E WSO extraction showcased our military’s innovativeness and ability to perform effectively in the most complex situations. And highlighted that they couldn’t stop us.

Reading the NYT now about Iran is like reading an actual newspaper. Journalism! And good news! It’s remarkable.

This is when Democrats get mad and cancel their subscription and call the NYT “right-wing.”

Democrats are terrified that Trump (and 80% of the American people) might be right. What if he starts being right on the 50-50 stuff? Or the 40-60 stuff? Horrifying. Especially if your entire platform is anti-Trump hysteria, plus infanticide, castrating the young, assisting suicide and honky-hate. If people start liking Trump again, holy shit.

Saint Croix said...

Bruce, small quibble with what you said. We’re in a fight with religious people. Religious people look for signs from God. An American fighter is shot down on Good Friday. We spend millions of dollars to rescue him on Easter Sunday.

Iranian propaganda is that we have no faith, and we love money more than God (or people). Our actions suggest that this is not true. We are a generous people, and we think a single human life is sacred. It speaks volumes to people looking for what is holy and right.

Religious people also don’t like hellfire sermons, but we do pay attention to them.

It’s a secular war. I don’t know anybody who thinks war is holy. But Iran has religious leaders who do think that. We’d like to shake that belief, by reminding them that war is hell and God likes peace. And God is on the side of peace.

Is this the "art of the deal"? Get yourself so over your skiis that you have to accept anything to make the pain stop. The Iranians took Trump to the cleaners.

“Bruce, small quibble with what you said. We’re in a fight with religious people. Religious people look for signs from God. An American fighter is shot down on Good Friday. We spend millions of dollars to rescue him on Easter Sunday.”

A couple of maybe quibbles. The rulers of Iran, especially the late Ayatollah, are 12er Shi’a. It’s an apocalyptic sect. They can’t see their 12th Iman or Mahdi until the end times. So, bring it on. But where are they going to get enough virgins for their jihadist martyrs? Much of the rest of Islam thinks that they are crazy. Scary crazy. And scary crazy equates to power at times. They have been milking this for years.

Big Mo talks about Christianity (and Judaism) in the Koran. So they know the Easter story. Christianity is somewhat feared by Muslims, because we were able to stop them at the Gates of Vienna, and evict them from Spain, under the flag of Christianity. We got our celestial sign from the rescue of the F16E WSO, with no US casualties, and plenty of Iranian ones. But they haven’t gotten any sign from their god. Their 12th Iman is still likely dead, 1200 years later. Their culture was on the way back to meet him, likely losing whatever electricity and clean water they still had, etc. yes, the elites with True Faith probably not shaken. But they haven’t gotten rank and file, maybe not so much.

Something else that they probably won’t admit. A lot of crazy 12er Shi’a. But Trump did his own crazy this time. They have been bullying their neighbors for decades, along with much of the rest of the world with their crazy. The difference with Trump was that he was just as crazy, but had the power to send them back 1200 years to meet their Mahdi on his terms, without paying the price in martyrs.

Finally, Trump and company got their avowed goals. They didn’t get regime change (yet), but that explicitly wasn’t one of their goals. They made explicitly clear their goals all along. The Dems just intentionally muddied them, trying ‘to destroy Trump. To see this, just go back through the libtard comments here.

What was the Obama deal? We’ll give you pallets of cash. You pinkie promise not to build nuclear weapons. Wink, wink. And we will promise not to watch you very closely, if you do? And if they’re caught, maybe apologize for getting caught, but nothing more?
