"Coyote vs. Acme — a film Warner Bros. famously tried to scrap in 2023 — has released its first footage ahead of coming to theaters this summer."

Hollywood Reporter observes.

Warner Bros. had planned to scrap the completed movie as part of a $115 million write-down. Social media uproar helped to save the project, which Ketchup Entertainment acquired for distribution. The shelving attempt was one of the first headline-making decisions under CEO David Zaslav (along with another high-profile and completed project, Batgirl).... Zaslav previously told The New York Times about the decision, “The question is, should we take certain of these movies and open them in the theater and spend another $30 or $40 million to promote them? And [the] Warner Bros. team and HBO made a number of decisions. They were hard. But when I look at the health of our company today, we needed to make those decisions. And it took real courage."

I've seen the trailer, and I think they made the right decision to scrap this thing after making the wrong decision to manufacture it in the first place — to insert the Warner Brother cartoons into the real world, especially a real world full of lawyers... it's awful... but then that's the opinion of someone who has an aversion to movies based on pre-existing intellectual property and to movies about lawyering. So check for yourself:

ADDED: Let's remember that Chuck Jones had rules for the use of Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, and this movie egregiously breaks rule #6: "All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters—the southwest American desert."

“especially a real world full of lawyers”

a serious question: is there any facet of modern life that lawyers don’t ratfuck?!?

Leave the cartoon coyotes alone! They are best observed in their natural habitat.

Esteban చెప్పారు...

This looks fantastic for what it is.

Well now it is uncomfortably close to the real-life escape of Roadrunner Trump from the Dem coyotes and their lawfare from Acme LP. Could trigger some viewers. CC, JSM

Looks funny to me.

Is Sean Penn in it? If not then it’s still a step up from the abomination that one best picture earlier this year.

Of course, you know this means WAR!

Hahahaha! Looks like a fun movie.

Gerda Sprinchorn చెప్పారు...

The big question in my mind is how the movie handles the differences in the cartoon-world rules and the real-world rules. If a cartoon piano falls on a human, does it kill the human or does the human just get a comical lump on the top of his head?

Leland చెప్పారు...

I wondered why I was seeing stories on “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” That was a surprise hit and this looks similar.

rehajm చెప్పారు...

Spielberg was at the movie industry preview conference lest week. He proclaimed the industry needs to stop relying on old franchises and ficus on creating original content, then show that content exclusively in theaters for longer periods. Much longer, like the old days of HBO. I don’t know if he’s right but it sounds like a better plan than recycled franchises quickly moving to streaming before the Summer is over mixed in with Netflix and Hallmark Channel drek….but what do I know, I’m not going back to movie theaters and not enough people lost their shirts for infusing every bit of content with leftie propaganda…

rehajm చెప్పారు...

‘Althouse audiences approve!’ Put that in the trailer…

Money Manger చెప్పారు...

Sorry to divert the thread, but Zaslav's shelving of this project had little to do with the quality of the film, and everything to do with his strategy to squeeze any available cash out of the Warner operations in 2023-24. He wanted to improve the balance sheet optics, maximizing the price in the auction of Warner Brothers, ultimately sold to Paramount, last year.

He orchestrated the whole shebang, and did a pretty good job--he gets a personal payout around $500 million.
Sorry Acme.

Joe Bar చెప్పారు...

When is that "Frankenstein, Part Deux" movie coming out?

Birches చెప్పారు...

If Detective Pikachu can make almost $500 million and the Sonic movie has sequels, I don't see why this couldn't do well.

Lest we forget, the product liability case of Wile e Coyote vs. Acme Products, Inc. was initially featured in the pages of National Lampoon magazine during the’70s.

Randomizer చెప్పారు...

I am definitely going to watch that movie. It's got classical music in a cartoon, which we haven't had for decades and it's a good role for John Cena.

It won't be good, I expect about as watchable as the Minecraft movie. No way it will reach the quality of the Sonic movies.

Those are video game movies, but they have the same dumb fun with recognizable characters vibe.

Howard చెప్పారు...

Didn't want to watch who framed Roger Rabbit nor Space Jam. There's no accounting for taste. Sounds like Zaslav has a taste for accounting, however.

I have seen that. Very funny. I never knew the original source. Thanks.

As Foghorn Leghorn would say, “I say, that’s a marvelous idea, boy! Absolutely terrific!”

Temujin చెప్పారు...

Can't wait. My favorite cartoons of all time were the old WB cartoons. And honestly, anything that includes Foghorn Leghorn is worth watching- even if it's not as good as the original voice.
Loved the trailer. What's not to like?

Ann- did you not watch any cartoons when you were a kid? Were you already spending Saturday mornings reading John Stuart Mill?

Joe Bar చెప్పారు...

A search for "Wile e Coyote vs. Acme Products, Inc" yields several briefs, opening statements, and case transcripts. All with varying levels of amusement.

Will Cate చెప్పారు...

Grow a sense of humor, Ann... this movie is gonna be great.

Quaestor చెప్పారు...

Charles M. Jones is dead. There's no third act for Wile. E. Coyote without Jones. In the 1960s, Warner closed its animation shop (aka Termite Terrace) and farmed out its characters to DePatie-Freleng/Format Films, who produced about eight Roadrunner/Coyote featurettes under the WB brand. No more direction by Chuck Jones. No more Michael Maltese stories. No more Carl Stalling/Milt Franklyn scores. No more Abe Levitow magic pencilling. All of them are utterly miserable and humorless.

Wince చెప్పారు...

Prequel concept: Coyote v. Acne: The Teenage Years.

Amadeus 48 చెప్పారు...

The Warner Bros cartoons benefited tremendously from the vocal talents of Mel Blanc (Bugs, Daffy, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester the cat, etc.) The Road Runner cartoons were voiceless except for the "meep, meep" of the speedy bird. They were visual masterpieces.

Wilbur చెప్పారు...

The premise is good, but it sounds like it could support about three minutes of movie mirth on its own (or a Lampoon article). How are they going to pad out the rest of it?

How much does a movie ticket cost now? I haven't been in 30 years, as I don't like giving my money to Leftists. I'm catching up to my father's record; he said the last movie he went to was Going My Way.

Quaestor చెప్పారు...

Cartoon characters belong in the cartoon world where catapult-launched boulders fly non-ballistic paths to crush the catapult operator. Mixing live actors into that realm is never as entertaining as the idea seems to the suits.

"...this movie is gonna be great." Yes, I agree. Great in the sense of large, immense, or notable, as in the Great Disillusionment. Yes, do it, Warner Bros. Those holding Disney paper need a public distraction from Snow White.

narciso చెప్పారు...

Yes the classic shorts were the bomb

Known Unknown చెప్పారు...

I think it's a fun idea that feels inevitable given Wile E's poor results with ACME products. It's an interesting extension of the original Looney Tunes world. Perhaps making it completely animated would've made more sense.

Foghorn Leghorn remains a bad ass. That's the important thing. Nice voice!

It's a minority view (I think) but I prefer to hear the voice of the coyote ("Wile E. Coyote, genius") when he tried to catch a rabbit.

I remember seeing the trailer for "Top Gun" and thinking who wants to see this kind of crap.

There's this line from David Sedaris (in "Theft by Finding"): "October 5, 1997... I had to sit through another endless preview for Titanic. Who do they think is going to see that movie?"

tim maguire చెప్పారు...

This doesn't seem to have anything at all to do with the old Looney Tunes cartoons. It's just a tired boring "corporations evil" story dressed up with cartoons from our childhood.

One of the coolest things about Bugs is how he would travel throughout time and space. And bring Brooklyn with him.

William చెప్పారు...

I'll definitely see this, just not in a movie theater.......Scrapping Batgirl was probably a good idea, but it would have been interesting to see if it were as bad as Supergirl......Superdog was okay in that last Superman movie, but he was no Lassie......The One Piece series on Netflix is a new take on a comic book character. I'd like it a lot better if I were twelve years old, but it's pretty good and sometimes, watching it, I felt like a was twelve years old.

You might want to check out Scooby-Doo 2, which is amazing. Way funnier and cooler than the original cartoon.

(Don't bother with the first one, it sucks).

Smilin' Jack చెప్పారు...

Looks cool to me. I’m not sure it would keep me entertained for 90 minutes, but I’d definitely rather sit through it than any of last year’s Best Pic nominees.

"Way funnier and cooler than the original cartoon."

To be "way funnier than the original cartoon" isn't much of a hurdle, sort of like a pole vault event for earthworms.

"... "All action must be confined to the natural environment of the two characters—the southwest American desert." ..."

While I greatly admire Chuck Jones, he's no wildlife authority. Our neighborhood is temperate forest in a post oak savannah region, and it abounds with both road runners and coyotes. But the absence of long open vistas featuring cliffs, high overhangs, and giant, tippy rocks would make for boring cartoons. I doubt I'll see the movie, seems like they've contrived something to extract money from a franchise.

Fred Drinkwater చెప్పారు...

My father and his pilots saw Top Gun first run, and aside from remarks about hollywood-ization of the flight scenes, he said the least believable part was how buff all the navy guys were. "Nobody was like that back in our day"

Then a couple months later he came back from Miramar after some G-suit checkout thing. "I was wrong. All the crews looked like straight out of the movie."

Big Mike చెప్పారు...

@donald, did you try ACME Mud Flaps Corporation?

Goju చెప్పారు...

What's ironic is that a coyote actually runs faster than a road runner.

Christopher చెప్పారు...

Looks like a cute idea to me. I think building a story around suing Acme for defective products is a great way to get maybe a couple hours out of a limited (though enjoyable) gag.

Maybe the whole movie itself fell flat, that I can believe. It's hard to be good.

KellyM చెప్పారు...

Last month driving home from a spur of the moment weekend trip to Death Valley, we came upon a skinny coyote standing in the middle of the deserted two-lane road. He was in no hurry to move as we approached, and it was almost a game of chicken to see whether we’d slow down before he decided he was ready to give way. The thing that made me smile though, was looking around, the desert landscape fully resembled a classic Coyote & Road Runner cartoon. The morning sunlight was soft on the brown and tan hills, while Joshua trees and Creosote bush dotted the immediate landscape. Chuck Jones was right. It’s the only environment that works.
