"Bob was inspirational. I always just think: ‘The vandals took the handles.' Just that little phrase out of everything. It’s so sort of corny but brilliant."

Said Paul McCartney, quoted in "Bob Dylan and the Beatles: When the Fab Four Became the Fab Five/Jim Windolf’s new book, 'Where the Music Had to Go,' traces the influence of Dylan on the Beatles and the Beatles on Dylan" (NYT).

You might think I'd read that book, but I actively don't want to read it.

"The vandals took the handle" was an observation, explaining why the pump was no longer functional.
The handle was aluminumn, and homeless sold it for scrap.

The vandals may be in the handles. But pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!"

I'm listening to some Tom Waits and he definitely was inspired by Bob Dylan.

I know the exact meaning of must bust an early May and pump don’t work. It’s all from Bard College. There was a pump that the handle was stolen from in Annandale on Hudson in 1964. Also, there was a raid by Duchess County DA G Gordin Litty on my dorm Manor house at Broad College in 1969. It was a very famous drug raid to get him reelected."

Ah, c'mon.
Would you, could you, on a train?
Would you, could you, in the rain?

Dylan dismissed the Beatles as music for teeny boppers, then ran out to buy himself an electric guitar. You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

The two influenced each other in beneficial ways. Lennon & McCartney showed Dylan how to be more interesting musically and Dylan showed Lennon & McCartney how to be more interesting lyrically.

Dylan and the Beatles were mid-twenties, trying on identities, borrowing sounds, and guarding egos like territory. Less scandal, more rite of passage: imitation, rivalry, and the awkward birth of a voice they could finally call their own.

Ramblin Jack Elliott was a much bigger influence on Dylan than the Beatles.

Do you have a tag for “books I actively won’t read” ?

Cultural figures like the Beatles and Bob Dylan certainly had talent, originality, and drive. But there are always people with talent, originality, and drive. What elevated them to legendary stature was an underlying cultural wave for which their styles and content were perfect fits.

If I can just hold on for another few decades, my turn will come.

How does one actively not do something? Aren't you done when you first decide no? Or is the temptation so great you have to keep fighting it? What an existence...

Yah, what Levi says above. Just like your enemie's list is just important as your friend's the books/authors you refuse is as valuable as the ones you like.

The vandals took the handles because the candles were too hot and the sandals were in use. In the late '60s Bob often had me searching for deep meaning when was just making rhymes

The bit about Bard College and G. Gordon Liddy (who years later was one of Pres. Nixon's "Plumbers", but he was then an Assistant D.A. in Dutchess County NY) is is totally true, as I was student there in the mid-1960s.
Indeed, there was a triangular little lawn between the erstwhile Adolph's Bar and the former Annandale NY P.O. and the water well hand pump nearer the P.O had long since had the handle removed. There were several Dylan songs on the Adolph's jukebox, and Dylan himself was sometime seen by me drinking a beer or two there (as he lived near Woodstock NY, just across the river from Bard). Of course the women would be all over him, but when asked "are you really Bob Dylan?", he would invariably answer "No".

I'm with Jupiter. Dylan is simultaneously as banal as Dr. Seuss and preciously, performatively inscrutable as some of the shittier work of R.E.M. There's one or two of his songs I'll hum along with, but I wouldn't cross the street to hear him play.

Bob is so brilliant, he was mocking liberals with their Israel hatred 40 years ago.

If Trump had better taste in music, he would play that song for reporters and make them pay attention to the lyrics. And do his little dance.

Bob is mocking you, whiny libs! Tremble in fear of the mighty folk artist.
