Hezbollah and Israel are still bombing each other - Hezbollah striving to kill civilians; Israel striving to strike those who give Hezbollah orders and to blow up Hezbollah missile and weapon stockpiles. "Moral leaders" in the media and elsewhere entirely disregard Hezbollah's attacks on Israeli civilians while pretending they really think that the Hezbollah leaders and weapons depots which Israel is striking are civilians out for breath of fresh air and day care centers. "Moral Leaders!" There'll be comic routines in the future based on your pretensions.
Iran is not sending missiles against Israel or the Gulf states. It is trying to claim the Gulf of Hormuz for itself so that it can make money off tolls and gain power by threats to close the shipping lane. It's media strategy is the well known "Tet Offensive Media Strategy" in which a complete military defeat of Viet Nam by the US is presented as a complete military defeat of the US by Viet Nam in the media and the public believes the media. Some of us know better now than to believe the anti-American media and some of us have caught the TDS plague and read, with little glad cries and approving chuckles, stories from "Tet Offensive in the Media - Part II" in which the US lies prostrate in defeat before dancing Mullahs.

It would take us a lot less time to build rare earth manufacturing/mining and rebuild our pharmaceutical infrastructure than it would take for China to find oil in tibet.

They were men of principle and they were willing to die for those principles. Sir Thomas More was executed for his beliefs. He was also willing to have others executed for their beliefs when he was Chancellor. Thomas Cranmer cheered More's execution. He himself was later burned at the stake. These were men of courage, intelligence, and conviction. The world would have been a better place if they were a tad more venal and corrupt.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust: That's his expression, and many other others. He's dustier than Sir Thomas More. Most people have never heard of him. Sir Thomas More, on the other hand, got canonized and more importantly landed the starring role in A Man for All Seasons........They both died foolish deaths, but Sir Thomas More got the sepulcher with a view. A few days ago I happened to see a couple C-17s on downwind to land at Gowen Field in Boise.

Thinking to myself: Self, the Boise ANG A-10 squadron is deploying. Sure enough. As is a Michigan A-10 squadron.

Given the degree of air superiority that the Islamic Republic in its victorious ways has given us, why would we be sending two squadrons (probably either 32 or 48 airplanes) to the Gulf?

Well, that requires considering what those victorious ways has left the IR with: fast missile boats mimicking submarines, and Shahed drones. For which the A-10s are perfect: long loiter time, good airspeed match, and 2000 rounds of 30mm.

Also, the DOW deployed two MEUs, which include multiple mobile anti-air units, which can be helicoptered onto ship decks for the transit.

My guess is that the plan is to let the various Asian countries and feckless Euros twist in the wind a bit more before the US forces the Strait.

In other words, it's the dog that hasn't barked.

At the same time, U.S. cruise missile stockpiles have been heavily depleted — and replenishing them will depend on access to Chinese critical minerals.”

Much of this is silly. Large oil stockpiles? This is the country where you can see gas lines from orbit. We aren’t talking German, or even British queueing. They are Chinese. Curb to curb, for miles.

The Chinese may be the biggest net oil importers in the world. Not just for gasoline, but also their very large petrochemical industry. They import maybe 80% of their oil and gas. It was primarily coming from two client countries at below market prices: Venezuela and Iran. Below market because they were shipping arms to those countries. A lot of arms to Iran, in particular. Unfortunately, Iranian oil is still embargoed. The Chinese, being Chinese, bypassed the embargo, at least for the oil coming out of the Gulf/Strait, by transshipping it from one ghost fleet tanker, to another, somewhere down by Malaysia. Everyone now knows that we know, what they are doing and where they are doing it. And, yes, showed what happens to ghost tankers bypassing the embargo - we sink them. Those were sunk by one of our fast attack subs. Big stink because we didn’t save the crews.

Iran forced everyone to buy their oil and gas in Chinese Yuan. They did that by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz. Which is why China superficially looks good here.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

“Russia brutally mocks arrogant Trump.”
Is this the same Russia that can’t win the stupid war it started with Ukraine?

Bruce Hayden કહ્યું...

But can this last? Iran has control over the Strait, and nothing more. They no longer have an Air Force, a navy, including any of their small armed speedboats, or very many missiles and missile launchers. What they have mostly are prepositioned mines. But no way to lay any more of them. No one knew where those mines were. And so no one could safely sail large ships (e.g. oil tankers) safely through the Strait. Their side of the ceasefire is to provide safe passage through the Strait for a limited number of ships every day. And, it turns out, the only way to do that is to let those ships being let through, know where the mines are not. We are, of course, watching closely where those ships go, in order to safely transit the Strait. But then, it turns out, that the Iranians gave maps to at least some of these ships. So, a lot of the FUD keeping the Strait closed is now in the hands of the Great Satan - the US.

So, where is China’s preferential position here, when Iran can no longer effectively close the Strait?

Breezy કહ્યું...

Comment was made earlier that one or two wings of A-10 Warthogs were being transferred into the area. They are already there. They were in action, doing what they do best last weekend - close air support in uncontested airspace. Two were lost last weekend rescuing the F15E WSO.

Their primary purpose is to provide loitering capacity to the suppression of Iran’s remains military, along with Apache gunships and B-52 BUFFs. These aircraft just circle over Iran and the Strait, periodically getting refueled in the air by our tanker fleet. And then quickly respond and destroy whatever pops up in the electronic sensors of our circling spy planes, or our satellites further out.

But I saw an article the other day, suggesting a new use of the venerable A-20s - calling them “Sea Hogs”. They turn out to be perfect against small boats and ships. Saw a picture of several heavily armed Iranian speedboats. And thought that a perfect setup for an A-10 attack run, using its 30 mm rotating cannon, obliterating the Iranian flotilla in one quick pass.

Mike (MJB Wolf) કહ્યું...

Yesterday’s counter argument was “but China only gets 30% of their net energy from oil” which sounds clever if you don’t do the math. Stuff made of oil and petroleum byproducts.

I saw the "Merkel" documentary. It's not about the early 1900s bonehead ball player, but about the former German leader. Very hagiographic. It starts and ends contrasting not so subtly contrasting Merkel and Trump.

I can admit that she was a competent Establishment leader for most of her time in power, but certainly not a transformational one. Her rise to power as an Ossi and a woman and the way she pushed aside men with much more experience of politics in pre-unification West Germany was surprising and impressive, until you realize that Helmut Kohl wanted a woman and East German in his cabinet and as his successor.

According to the documentary, she took in a million refugees because of her big heart. Not an excuse for such a major blunder. They celebrated her for hating the Berlin Wall -- she wanted walls torn down, in contrast to you know who -- but they didn't ask what (if anything) she did to bring the wall down or to fight the power in the DDR. The usual suspects showed up to laud Merkel: HRC, Tony Blair, that Persian woman from CNN and PBS, etc.

It was an especially nice touch when Dantes breezed into the police archive and announced that he was writing an article about political prisoners in 1820 for a paper in Paris, and could he see a certain file?

And the (French!) archivist just opens up at the mention of a name, and fails to check the file contents when it is returned.

Suspension of disbelief only stretches so far.

Inflation Soared to 3.3% in March, Driven by Higher Gasoline Costs ~ WSJ
'The reading, the first major inflation report since the Iran war began, came in at its hottest level in two years'

But that's Iran's fault right? Or Biden's?

Imagine how low pump prices would be and strong the economy and stock market would be but for Trump trying to fix things.

All of Trump's policies have been--to one degree or another--inflationary.

War: inflationary
Deficit: inflationary
Tariffs: inflationary
Politicizing the Fed/loose money advocacy: inflationary
Immigration: inflationary
Cuts to renewables: inflationary
Corruption: inflationary

Instead of B2s Trump should threaten to send a bunch of California Democrats to Iran. Infrastructure wouldn’t stand a chance.

Cuts to renewables: inflationary

Leaving aside all the other bollocks, cuts to renewables inflationary?

In California, with probably the highest proportion of renewables in the US, electricity is 3 times as expensive as in Idaho, which has pretty much given the single digit salute to renewables. German electricity is five times as expensive as the US average.

California, hell bent on net zero, is paying near as dammit to $6/gallon for gasoline; Idaho, above the US average due to geographic isolation, pays $1.60/gallon.

All of which is perfectly obvious to even the most casual observer of reality.

Melania's hoo-ha about her supposed relationship with Jeffrey and Ghislaine is certainly a diversion but not one that anyone has recognized.

The fact that Melania and Donald's relationship began in 1998, means that she has known a great deal about Trump's lawbreaking and his sexual misadventures for more than 25 years but she is somehow expecting us to believe her to be an honest person.

Honesty would have her bailing from the marriage based upon her prenuptual agreement with the Asshole but that has not happened. Could it be that she needs the Trump Iran War to be gone when Barron becomes eligible for the draft in December (as a result of Trump's Big Ugly Bill)?

Snort. Gadfly lecturing us about honesty.
