I’ve always assumed we’d go broke from federal entitlements but blue state welfare scams have accelerated the pace exponentially. Tiny little Massachusetts spent $30 billion on welfare last year and 1 out of 4 dollars in health spending goes to medicaid. I might live long enough to see the end…

The impact of the Iran war will hurt the US even after conflict ends. What makes this so politically damaging is that Americans have seen this movie before. Inflation was one of the biggest reasons the Biden administration lost credibility. People were already worn down by years of higher prices, and now they are being told, once again, to absorb another round of economic pain because Washington chose a conflict it did not need to own so directly. So of course Trump’s numbers are falling. That is not some strange polling accident. It is the most natural thing in the world. When families are paying more for gas, more for groceries, more for electricity, more for basic necessities they do not care about grand rhetoric. They feel that failure immediately.

And that is what makes the politics here even worse for Trump. He sold himself as the candidate of America First. But this does not feel like America First to a lot of voters. It feels like ordinary Americans are being asked to carry the costs, the inflation, the strategic risk, and the military burden of a policy that increasingly looks more aligned with Israel’s priorities than with the day-to-day interests of people living in the United States. Once that perception takes hold, it is incredibly hard to reverse, because people experience it in such a concrete way: at the pump, at the checkout counter, and in the growing sense that Washington is once again spending money abroad while telling people at home to be patient.

There is also a basic credibility problem here. The White House still has not given the public a clear number for what this operation is going to cost. That matters. This is not just about inflation; it is also about military spending, deficits, and priorities. If the administration wants the country to keep backing this war, it cannot simply wave away the budget question. Americans have every right to ask how much this will cost, who will pay for it, and why that burden makes more sense than dealing with urgent problems at home.

And then there is Congress. As the 60-day issue gets closer, this stops being just a presidential decision and becomes a harder institutional and political test. That does not mean congressional resistance would shut everything down overnight. It probably would not. But it would absolutely make life harder for the White House. It would restrict room for maneuver, complicate funding, and expose how shaky the political foundation for this war really is. In that sense, this is not just a foreign policy problem for Trump. It is a self-inflicted domestic problem, and the longer it drags on, the harder it becomes to sell to the American people.

and now they are being told, once again, to absorb another round of economic pain because Washington chose a conflict it did not need to own so directly

I'm not sure what you mean here. You're still trying to bang on the "war of choice" thing, it seems, but what would it have looked like not to "own" this conflict "so directly"? Are you suggesting that we should just ("just"!) have convinced Israel to attempt to destroy Iran's nuclear capabilities on its own? Because who else was going even to try, if we weren't there, "owning it directly"? I mean, look at Europe now: their plan appears to be to let us do literally everything and then come swanning in to claim credit for bringing about... what? Peace in our time? They certainly weren't going to "own" anything "directly" or otherwise.

Or did you mean to imply that we should have sent the CIA in covertly? Nothing ever goes wrong with that...

The rest of your comment is concern trolling, though of course it has plenty of truth to it: some Americans won't see this piece of foreign policy as "America first," there are, properly, budgetary issues to be worked out, Congress may shut it down as campaign season gets underway, and Trump's poll numbers are declining. All true. The relevance, though? If this conflict was necessary now in order to keep Iran from developing its conventional screen, behind which it could act with impunity, then its electoral consequences are less important than going forward with the action. That's how Rubio reads and explains the situation. Trump came into office as a lame duck, and while not losing Congress in the midterms would certainly make his life (and remaining two years in office) a whole lot easier, I think it's pretty clear that making his own life easy hasn't been a high priority for him as president.

The media and the left (you know what I'm going to say here: "but I repeat myself") are only too happy to oblige. Whether this action was indeed necessary is a debate we could've had, maybe. But instead, they're - you're - all-in on the message that Trump is a warmonger, Trump is a puppet of Israel, Trump doesn't care about the country, Trump doesn't have a plan... no matter whether it was necessary or not. Our security is much less important to the left than power and control. 'Twas ever thus.

Trump can't make cattle appear that weren't bred three years ago because of Biden Admin policies.

It takes 3 years from the date of breeding until that beef lands in a market.

We are seeing today the result of a decline in breeding in 2023.

It's really pathetic, that NYC can have riots, and protests for every single left wing grievance, but that the commie Muslim mayor bans public celebrations for our countries 250th Birthday. The left can't hate America any more than they do...or maybe they can. This is disgusting, and another reason why as long as the left conquered NYC, I willl never go there again.

“It feels like ordinary Americans are being asked to carry the costs, the inflation, the strategic risk, and the military burden of a policy that increasingly looks more aligned with Israel’s priorities than with the day-to-day interests of people living in the United States.“

Day-to-day interests of Americans living in the ME matter, too, as well as those non-Americans with whom we ally. Our interests align with that of Israel in this case, not to mention other ME states that agree but were less vocal about it until they were frantically barraged with missiles after the war started.

Besides, Iran forced the Israel-US alignment in this war by its brand slogan, now decades old, “Death to Israel, Death to America”.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

Breezy captured the essence of this war that makes it different from every other prior regional conflict. Iran is alone against every neighboring state, except Pakistan. We are in coalition while Iran is isolated and weak, and their proxies in Gaza and West Bank inert and shrinking when not actively distancing themselves from Iran.

The problem progressives have is that ordinary people across the globe have to suffer with their poor governance. Whether it is increased housing costs as homes are taken by illegal immigrants, less access to healthcare for the same reason, bare shelves as shoplifting is legalized, repeat violent crime as Judges abuse bail reform, and staggering corruption as money meant for the community is given away to international special interest. The proffered solution, “tax the rich” just causes the rich to move away adding to the misery.

Ref the ball drop: Mamdani may not have a choice. He sensibly banned all demonstrations during the World Cup, which period spans 4 July. So now he can't exempt a patriotic event based on its content.

Plus if he did let crowds into Times Square, his fellow travellers might infiltrate it with PLO flags, block the flow with BLM kneeling, or lift their skirts to do their own ball drop. Embarrassing even for him. CC, JSM

I am always confounded that “pride” in how one likes their sexual proclivities has become the rage. I’ve known many gays who have also questioned this. As one gay friend said “I graduated top of my class and built a business, but I am only celebrated for ass sex. Messed up.”

The VIX volatility index, which tends to move counter to stock prices, continued its breakout that was developing Friday afternoon. May be huge, may not; have to watch a little.

Triple tops over last three years in the Russell 2000, the SPX, OEX, NDX, XLK, MDY, Dow Utilities and Transports.

Triple tops over the last six years but failures to make new highs right here in the Dow Industrials, the New York Stock Exchange average, FEZ (Europe).

Momentum divergences everywhere.

So many people are desperate to not have been wrong or proven to have been lied to in electing Trump. They have cut ties with family and friends; staked their entire personality on his presidency and have pegged all their hopes on him. Messianism is not new in politics and is found quite frequently in South America.

Any marginal victory Trump claims from this will be clambered for and grasped with both hands by these people. Too much of their personal life is at stake to change views.

If any do, it is well within everyone’s interests not to mock them -- as satisfying and cathartic that may be after so much damage has been inflicted upon us all.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ ayon kay ...

One has to hand it to Trump -- to campaign on a platform of ending foreign wars and lowering inflation and ending up driving up inflation because of starting a foreign war….that would be too much winning for even the most accomplished Hollywood script writers.
